- Interior designer and antique dealer Max Rollitt welcomes us into his renovated grain storage barn in Hampshire, for our latest episode of Design Notes. Yavington Barn is a haven for any antique lover, with each room exuding character through the clever arrangement of antique furniture and decorative detailing. “There’s so much within the decorative arts which is touched by hand that actually exemplifies richness,” says Max as he explains what he looks for in an antique. “That’s really what I’m looking for - something with some real texture and a story, and beauty”.
After talking through the inspiration behind Yavington Barn, Max takes us on a tour of the rooms. From the Georgian Gothic windows to the 18th-century sofa, Max’s impeccable eye has created a living interior out of this open-plan space, full of his unique and beautiful finds. Watch the full episode of Design Notes with Max Rollitt, as we tour his inviting and fascinating restored barn.

I love the way he casually calls those gorgeous antique pieces as "brown furniture" and that brilliant yellow sofa that he's sitting on!
What a joy to watch this morning! So grateful for folks like Max who treasure the antiques and restoration of them…those glorious solid wood pieces..not all the glued/pressed/clunky stuff of today! Max’s voice reminds me of someone in a streamed show I watched recently…can’t put my finger on it, but could listen to his voice all day. I love calling a room “a snug”. Truly evokes the feeling….thanks for presenting this loveliness, H & G, and thanks to Max Rolitt for being willing to share it!
Soul man with authentic class
The Hungarian blanket/bed throw is called cserge, it's a rough wool fabric, it's still being made in Hungary and Transylvania.
It’s not often I want to move into a shop! I really admire his attention to detail in the mouldings, patterns and colours he’s used as the backdrop to display the pieces to their best advantage. Most people don’t even do that for their own home. I couldn’t let any of the pieces go, it looks like a country house where the contents are a family collection that must never be sold off or split up. A joy to be there with him for a few minutes this autumn morning.
That yellow sofa he’s sitting on ❤️
This gentleman seems to love his furniture, skimming the beautiful pieces in the house. And everything fits the British accent as well! A pleasure to watch...
What’s not to love? A feast for the senses. Texture, colour, stories ….Divine ❤
"Touched by hands"... sums it up for me. I grew up with art and browsing in antique shops with my parents and I developed an appreciation for anything handmade. It has soul. It really doesn't have to cost much either, if you visit second hand stores or garage sales. Thanks for this great interview!
I love this man’s articulation to explain his reasoning for his collections & love of his pieces 👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
That yellow sofa is divine!
Really lovely space and such a charming person. I love beautiful things well loved and repaired. I enjoy how he never mentions their 'worth' but just the reasons he loves them.
I could listen to him talk all day, Beautiful place!!!
Absolutely stunning! Classic beauty. More of this gentleman!
Every time he touches his beauties, I feel the love he has for texture. Great episode. Wonderful home!!
Coolest shop! Beautiful. You would never guess what is within the tin building.
I’ve bought things from his shop and I live in the US. So glad they are featuring him.
It's refreshing to see antique furniture remaining in its original state as opposed to being painted over red or gray. I have several antique pieces in my home and the idea of painting over is definitely unrealistic. ❤️
I totally agree!❤
Totally!
Actually, there is quite a fair amount of painted furniture in the video. Some pieces made from mahogany are simply not meant to be painted in the first place, however something that is not a genuine antique is fair game for a painted finish if done properly and with some artistic skill.
the last bit... "Its subliminal....I think , surrounded by things, and this sort of constant flow and stimulation is subliminal, and it doesn't mean you've got a good taste but it sort of gets under your skin and permeates into your soul". 😍I'll be using this quote a lot.
Simply exquisite. Thank you very much for sharing.
I LOVED this. Thank you for posting it for us to view. DA
How wonderful. He gets to build his idealized home with every sale and every find. Thank you.

I’ve purchased things from him and I live outside of Washington. His stuff is fabulous. And I do have good taste. Wonderful..
Exquisite ! The various printed lampshades alone are fabulous!!!
@@bettinarossi7908 I thought they might be hand painted lampshades? And I am totally stealing the idea... just beautiful.
@@kimclarke5018 Hi! Would you happen to know.. if the lampshades are printed fabric or handpainted?
distilled every moment of everyday pure elegance.
i would love nothing more than to listen to Max Rolitt
all day. marvelous.
We love the IVAN HITCHENS style painting on the lampshade!
Very interesting collection and the arrangements of the things 👍😜
Beautiful design! Very refreshing to see ones's appreciation for the natural walnut and the wear & tear, the history of the pieces. I love that not everything is painted or repainted which so many designers do. This home is absolutely lovely and very timeless design.
I was fascinated by his understanding of design, fabrication and his attention to detail. I need to watch this several times to absorb all his knowledge and appreciation of the beautiful things he’s acquired.
Oh, how I would love to visit. This is my kind of place. Love the yellow sofa.....and everything else.
Most beautiful, thank you.
Just beautiful! I loved every single thing, the paint colours, the exact furniture pieces I would have (if only), the arrangement of each room, and the owner's love and appreciation of all his treasues. One of the best videos from H & G.
Wow what a tour! Every piece is beautiful and unique. Would love to visit the shop and soak all of the beauty and knowledge.
soooooo fantstically gorgeous
What Max Rollitt has created is breathtakingly beautiful. I have to admit that it fills me with overwhelming awe, outright envy, and a pang of secret guilt for loving it so much. How could one person have so much good taste?
What can one say, drop dead gorgeous
The perfect antidote for happiness.
So charming!
A beautiful video. What a joy
💖 the wayang kulit(shadow pupet) on the wall
Oh, Wow. What Uniqueness!!!😮😮😮
I love Max's clever use of color and smart design. Even with such exquisite furnishings, the home loves comfortable and lived in. Well done!
Gentelman with style, impressive.
I loved this place, so cozy and everything he has displayed throughout the rooms can breathe, the color and textures are so beautifully interwoven...Absolutely gorgeous.😊
So much to love about this home's wonderfully collected interiors! Thank you for showing us around!
The art of knowledge ❤
Amazing to see all this ‘context’ with such a brilliantly normal man in the middle of it all. This place is a love letter to the rescue of style and it’s forward legacy, what a mesmerising accumulation of stylish wonder and texture.
Thank you for sharing this brilliance.
When ever I see you in my subscription feed I get excited. Another wonderful vlog and contributor, thank you.
I so enjoyed this episode, from all the beautiful furniture to the information shared. This really is such a lovely space and just the sort of design I love!
Simply marvellous.
Such a charming place with beautiful antiques. I love the grey hallway. Gorgeous colour. Amongst everything I particularly liked the jelly moulds on the dining table.
I foresee arched doorways in my future. Thank you Mr Max♡
Wow! That was great- I’ll definitely watch this one again.
Would love to see all the fascinating objects up close
Beautiful. Doesn't get better than this.
Really want to see the garden as well. All of the furnitures are absolutely superb, beautiful decors.
A wonderful episode!
Wonderful tour indeed. His appreciation of being surrounded by such beauty, warmth and history is infectious.
Stunning and beautiful place!!! I thought I had died, and gone to Heaven!!! This place is so very much my style, decor and colors, except for the dark gray room. I so wanted to purchase this place and everything in it for myself!!! Well done indeed! 👏
Sublime
WOW! Just WOW! Blown away by everything in this home. As Max has four sons, I'm available for adoption if he fancies a daughter to help care for this abfab collection of handmade goodies!
amazing and beautiful. and this is a barn? wow. I like what he likes unusual and artistic beautiful items.
Fabulous, I’ve had a very similar experience, Mum was an antique dealer & l did quite a bit of restoration. Lovely atmosphere.
What a house! Compliments!
Yes. This place speaks to me.
Very tasteful and stylish! Congratulations!
Stunning place!
Hello from Spain.Yes beautiful stuff and place.
Thanks!
Beautiful 😍
Lovely tour. I could feel my blood pressure going down watching this.
Well that was fun!
An amazing collection of disparate objects whose only common denominator seems to be beauty.
Absolutamente Divino! Perfeccion!
Oh! What a relaxing addition to a lazy long Thanksgiving weekend here in the US. Love everything about this converted barn (except his sitting on the bedroom bench with his shoes on the fabric….but it is his home and can do what he wants!) I particularly like the blue/ gray paint on the walls. Will have to go back and try to catch the name of it!
Thanks for a lovely tour!
Wonderful!
Lovely!
Wonderful
Exquisite!
Absolutely stunning ❤️
Wonderful 🤩
Utterly delicious. Max is so attractive...
Delicious...
loved it all!
Loved it. Couldn't tell - live there or just showroom? Anyway everything works doesn't it?
I love this 💛
I really enjoyed this 🥰
A fabulous video, thank you so much! You're missing an L in the title and the description - it's Max Rollitt, with two L and two T!
I’m always curious about how they keep the full house of antique? Does it require strict settings on temperature, lighting and humidity? I have some rare antique fabric and embroidery pieces and I have to keep them in dark with very little temperature/humidity fluctuation. They can’t be shown 24/7 unless they are functional items in house.
謝謝~♡♡♡♡♡
Gosh how I hate living in Australia. Makes me so homesick for culture and architecture and true true class.
Beautiful👌🏾
Great presentation
Stunning house
My paternal grandfather was a cabinetmaker, trained in England around 1917. His younger brother was an artist who did quite well painting style travel posters during the 1930s. I appreciate how you leave things with their 'patina' and signs of wear. So much smooth plastic and particle board everywhere. Ugh. Keep teaching by example.
i like his style
Soul, exactly!
Great taste
I so look forward to your videos. I'm grateful that you decided to keep sharing your journey with the chateau. Happy holidays to you and your family from New Jersey to Normandy!
Texture.
Wauw
delicious.
