Kudos to the kids that stuck in there with you. They were good help and I am sure your success is in large part their success. Nice job all round

Great video and narration. It’s a miracle that you had no broken bones and didn’t total the filter / heat pump array with the heavy equipment! Your sons will remember this -school and work projects won’t seem so daunting. Great planning, execution, and team work.

In case anyone was wondering, he states @8:40 that the cost was $6-7k for the wall, not including labor.

Great work. Good job recording all the timelapse footage while the project was happening too.

You need to turn up your volume or talk a little louder here to quiet

Damn I wish Jimmy Carter found the bux to convert yo'all to metric. Regardless, massively informative video - thanks guys. And well done!! - the wall is stunning.

Well done. Informative. I didn’t see any drainage strategy in the plans.

did the engineer say you needed gabion boxes of this size?

  • @oby-1607

Would have been nice if you had poured in some concrete at different layers to help hold this together when the wire corrodes away. The rocks do allow for good drainage as water and freezing is your worst enemy of a retaining wall. Like I said, some concrete to allow the water to escape.

  • @wamdaddy

7-8 truckloads really filled all those boxes up?

What did the rock cost you, and what keeps the cages from collapsing and rusting?

I'd also like to know. Got a couple quotes from companies in the states for ludicrous prices. $180 a basket. Pretty sure they are just buying it from China and up charging. I'm seeing them for $20 a basket from the Chinese factories.

My baskets run roughly $250-$275 a basket but they are 16'x4'x4' and I can easily source them locally when I need more. Again, I will do a new video in the next month or so when I build some new retaining walls for a different location.

Very interesting how long did the project take

~3 months from breaking ground to calling for a final inspection. Working evenings and weekends. Lots of start and stop, not continuous. If I had the time to work it full time and have rock delivered ahead of time I expect it would have taken 80-100 hours. Keep in mind, that is based on 1.5-2 full time bodies. My teenage sons and Father-in-Law helping when available. Also, this is not my primary skill set.

Great looking Gabion wall. Can I ask where you got the cages from?

    • @skippard

I designed and built my own using readily available components. Panels from Tractor Supply Company, a farm supply store in the Northeast. I used a mixture of 16 foot sheep and hog panels. Bought locally so no shipping and then I found an online store for the helical wire for joining the panels. I'll do a new video on the Gabion cage construction as I need to build some new retaining walls.
