Mmm, not likely, I think. The current release is just a high def transfer. They’d have to do another one, and I’m not sure there’s much of a market for it.
I'm so pleased that they're including Pasolini's 1964 documentary, "Love Meetings" -- an on-the-street time capsule of Italy in the early sixties, that also features conversations with novelist Alberto Moravia and journalist Oriana Fallaci, among others. It's a wonderful film, though not always remembered. At this time Pasolini was an established poet with a large readership, and the people in the towns and villages he visited seemed eager to speak with him and answer his questions honestly, and it resulted in something very special.
‘Wow!’ was the only thing I could say when I heard about this too! This is the first box set that’s had me thinking about pulling out the big bucks! The supplementary material sounds fantastic.
Years ago, one of my closest friends mentioned to me that he didn't like Pasolini's films. I asked him what he watched. He replied that he had only seen one Pasolini movie. (You can see this one coming.) It turned out that the only Pasolini film he watched was "Salo." Groan! I tried to convince him that "Salo" was not the best Pasolini film to start with. Well;, this wonderful set, will definitely change my friend's opinion of Pasolini. It's a fabulous collection by a unique filmmaker.
This is a significant set for a few reasons: 1. This is yet another set that honors a filmmaker around their birthday (Criterion did this earlier with Federico Fellini) 2. This marks a proper Blu-Ray release of Mamma Roma which was only available on DVD in the collection for years (though I did like that release personally) 3. This covers a majority of Passolini's works which is 9 out of his 13 feature films with the exceptions of The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, A Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights) and Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. Knowing this, that would mean that Passolini would be the first director who directed a number of feature films to be covered entirely in the Criterion Collection as far as I know (not included directors who had only one film of course). This is shaping up to be an amazing box set overall, though I didn't see the Spine #1182 on the website itself. Perhaps it will show up later. But it is shaping up to be a big year for Criterion when it comes to box sets which were lacking a bit back in 2022. I'm also only expecting a smaller announcement after this for June next week, but I will say that this is a big one!
Pasolini is my #1 or #2 favorite filmmaker, i am so excited for this and I have also been trying to watch Oedipus and Medea for a long time and been unable to find them. I normally just watch stuff on the Channel, the only physical movies I own are Pasolini, so this will be an excellent addition!!
Greetings again Daisuke. It's been a while.I'm happy to see that you are well, and enjoying the thrill of the upcoming boxset. I am unfamiliar with the artist myself, but I am happy for you and your fellow fans of his work
I’ve never seen a film by Pier Paolo Pasolini, so I don’t have as much excitement as others do, but this does look to be a very great set and Criterion usually does a great job with the sets they put out. Cool to hear your thoughts about this Daisuke, have a great day and take care!
I think this type of boxset will finally get us the long awaited Blu-ray because they can just skip a title that doesn’t have a scan up to snuff. Very excited for this set I haven’t seen any except Salo and Teorema!
How fabulous...as you read through the titles I was hoping Medea was included as I love it so...as I do the wonderful Maria Callas. Thank you for sharing this great news .
Thank you so much for this. And wow, I did not realize that it was via Pasolini works that you were able to find this channel. I am very happy to hear that! Cheers.
Would you please do a review of the Criterion Collection release of “The Complete Jacques Tati” This is a release of the writer’s, director’s, actor’s 6 films, along with a collection of his shorts. The dvd set contains 12 discs, while the blu ray set contains 7 discs. Both sets contain the same content. Jacques Tati is considered, by many, to have been a genius in his craft.I’m confident that your followers would very much enjoy. your take on his work. Thank you. very much! Doug
This was so nice to be able to hear this news from you about an upcoming Criterion box set! I know there has been much discussion or anticipation for an announcement by Criterion for a larger set and I would have never guessed it would be another collection of Pasolini films! I've only seen/own the Criterion blu-ray of Salo. Ever since watching that film and doing a little research on the director himself, I can say that this is something that I would have great interest in getting. Pier Pasolini is an intriguing person to say the least and it will be so cool if I'm able to learn more about his films as well as himself through this set. The upcoming 50% Criterion sale this Summer (fingers crossed!) is poised to be the most dangerous one to my wallet yet!!! It is great to hear from you as always, my friend. I will always be a proud supporter of this channel! I continue to learn so much from you and the discussion always brings me so much happiness! Now we wait for news of a non-Criterion box-set release, namely, a Nightmare on Elm Street uncut box-set! Cheers, Daisuke!
I like your idea of future “101” releases, but, unfortunately, I’m pretty sure this isn’t indicative of future plans. To be sure, it is indicating an introductory “film school” presentation of his important works, but it’s also a play on the fact that it’s Pasolini’s 101st birthday.
Greetings, Daisuke. The only Pasolini films I've seen so far are the films in his Trilogy of Life, but I am interested in checking out his other works someday, so this box set is very welcome indeed. Hope you're doing well.
This morning, Criterion removed the spine number of 1182 from the set. Does this mean that was a mistake or did they mean to give something else that spine number? Because on the side of Pasolini 101 we see in the photo, there’s no spine number on it.
I remember my first Pasolini movie, Salò, just a fantastic movie; I must admit, at surface value, it was very shocking to my young cinema journey. Nevertheless, it has a comedic feel that I quickly recognized, and by the end, it left me feeling disgusted about how excessive power corrupts.
I’m very hesitant to delve into this filmography as like many I’ve known of his infamy since high school. Can anyone suggest watch orders on how to ease my way through his works based on how accessible they are?
I think that actually this set would be a great way for you to explore his works. Accattone and Mamma Roma are great places to begin and I think there is a kind of "accessibility" to those works.
I just bought the Masters of Cinema releases of The Gospel According to Matthew and Oedipus Rex. And I already own the Criterion Teorema. Oh well. This look pretty sweet.
I am slowly getting through fellini I should have it done way before the 101 box set but I am so excited to dive into his work, the first film or criterion o picked up Years ago was Salo so intrigued.
Have you seen all 9 of these films Daisuke? How about the short films and documentaries on the special features? How long has it been since you’ve seen them?
I absolutely Love Pasolini and have been wanting for quite a while. The “101” I believe refers to its 101 yrs since his birth. So it works on different levels.
The reason it doesn't include all of his films is because some of the films included in the set (6 I believe, I don't know for the rest of the world, but that's what it was in France) were re-released last year in a bunch of cinemas around the world last year to celebrate 100 years since Pasoloni's birth. Hence, like another viewer said, the set's name "Pasolini 101", or it might just be a pure coincidence. Also, Carlotta Films released a set with 9 films (most of them also being on this Criterion set) in France for 75€, wich I believe is a better financial option for French speakers.
I’m beyond ecstatic for this boxset. Pasolini was a god.
Thank you! Yes I am excited too.
Now I want Salo in 4K UHD.
Mmm, not likely, I think. The current release is just a high def transfer. They’d have to do another one, and I’m not sure there’s much of a market for it.
Thank you so much for the comment!

Mine came in the mail today and I'm so enamored. Gobsmacked. Excited!
Very exciting! Been waiting on Criterion to release Mamma Roma on Blu-Ray for so long!

The BFI also released a Pasolini boxset some years ago, highly recommended.

That Pasolini set is a must have. I will still keep my Eureka! Masters of Cinema versions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Nice to see Daiske so excited and surprised. He usually seems like he’s not as taken aback by the announcements.
Thank you so much for this comment here as well (as well as responses to others here). I appreciate it very much.
Super excited for this! Pasolini is the reason I discovered your wonderful channel too!

Oh that is such a great point! I didn’t realize that! Well done 👍
Woah this is kind of intense; individually these are all pretty rare
Yes!!
I’m gonna check out the Trilogy of Life box set and some others to see if his films are up my alley. The set looks great. Keep up the great work.
I dream of an Ozu 101, a Kurosawa 101, a Maurice Pialat 101…
This guys so sweet
This is very exciting. Recently I've been going down a Pasolini rabbit hole- beginning with his Trilogy of Life films.
Oh fantastic, this would then be a very good and timely release!! Well done and I hope you are well.
Best news all year!!! I really really hope this isn't the last great director set they do.
I'd kill for a Scorsese/Schrader 4 film Blu Ray box set
What would that entail?
@@daninbox Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Bringing Out The Dead
@@1dbanner Yeah I like most of those. Bringing Out The Dead is underrated.
Very interesting suggestion.
Greetings, Daisuke. The only Pasolini films I've seen so far are the films in his Trilogy of Life, but I am interested in checking out his other works someday, so this box set is very welcome indeed. Hope you're doing well.
Much appreciate Paperking my friend.
I am intrigued of the set alone, yet I haven't seen any of Pasolini works. I do wish it was a Kurosawa box set. one day, one freaking day.
I think that 101 signifies the anniversary of Pasolini's birth.
Oh yes!! That is a great point. I didn't realize that until I saw the comments such as yours. Well done.
Hopefully this release will be the first to come in regards to new box sets by Criterion...Feels like it's been ages since a proper set has come out.
Yes agreed

@@DaisukeBeppu thank you! My local library purchased multiple copies of the Wong Kar-Wai set for rental, I hope they’ll do the same for this.
Did they announce the pricing on this set? Thanks in advance…
$199.96 (for 9 disks) as pre-order price. Regular price $249.95 (info on their website)

Oh yeah, it says on the website it's celebrating the 101st anniversary of his birth.
