Hi this is for future references about the tips (also probably a little easier to have time stamps for people to quickly look through!) #1 (1:41) Pay attention to the W's (who, what, where, when, why, and how) #2 (2:37) Compare different ideas (look for similarities and differences) #3 (3:45) Categorize items in a list (break them up into manageable groups) #4 (5:45) Infer words (use context around that word, get a feeling if it is a negative/positive word) #5 (6:23) Highlight key words (things like increase/decrease or agree/disagree) #6 (6:40) Use strikeout tool (narrow answer choices) Thanks for this amazing video, always found CARS to be so hard.
Thank you so much!! Wow this is incredible and really made me understand what am I missing from the author's main idea, what am I overanalyzing and how to use process of elimination. Thank you! This made CARS seem less daunting and more "simple" when approaching a passage :)
I honestly feel like I get so overwhelmed so fast when I read a passage and questions. I just get scared and my eyes kinda glaze over and I don't know where to look. It seemed your highlighting made the difference for me. I MUST DO NOW. THANK YOU SIR!
I never write comments but I found this video to be super helpful! It was great to see how you approached the question and the mindset you had when answering. A lot of the other videos I watched just gave me general tips but it was hard for me to take it all in without an example! So thanks so much for this video!!!!
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! It has really helped me to reflect on WHAT I was doing wrong/WHY it has taken me so much time. I'd love to see more videos like this!
Could you please do another one of these CARS Walkthrough but taking more time explaining the rationales behind your answer choices? I had bit of a hard time keeping up with the middle to end portion of this video, which was mainly concerned with the questions/answers. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this! I noticed I get them wrong when I focus on answering quickly and not prioritize an analysis for each answer and why they could be wrong choices.
Really helpful! thank you so much! I feel like I will actually do a lot better now. I would love to see more videos like this for CARS. I have trouble with P/S passages that are heavy on research design questions, it would great to see you make a video on that :)
Thanks Madeline! Thanks for the kind words. I hope that my strategy works for you and I'll try to get out some more CARS passage walkthroughs soon in the future. Keep on practicine! You got this :)
Thank you! Would love to see more cars passage breakdowns! It would help if the screen was zoomed in more I had a hard time reading along with you for the passage and questions.
Hey Josephine! Glad you found this video to be very helpful :) I would love to make more walk-through videos for the other sections! However, unlike CARS, the other sections depend a lot on the knowledge base you already have and a walk through video might be a hit-or-miss for a lot of viewers. To help as many people as possible, I'm not sure a B/B or C/P walkthrough would be in their best interest right now. If you want to reach out to me and talk with me about this, feel free to reach out on Instagram or Facebook :)
Omg I did 3 passages in a row and would get about 50% correct. I watched your video and got all the questions correct, two passages in a row thank you so much!!!!
Jack Westin passages seem to be pretty short compared to the average blueprint test passage. What’s it like compared to the actual MCAT? I’m pretty slow at reading and I’m trying to get better but the length is definitely slowing me down
Hi Eric, thank you so much for the great videos! One question, when we go back to review the answer explanation, do you recommend an in-depth read, or skim through just like what you did? Many times I found the explanation so redundant and slow-to-the-point...But I forced myself to read through them carefully to try to develop the mindset, not sure if it was helpful...
Hi WL, that might depend on the source. If you're doing AAMC practice, definitely read them in depth and understand it completely. If you're doing practice for another purpose (building stamina, getting the main idea), sometimes an overly in-depth review may not be warranted.
In my practice, the questions I typically get wrong are those that have answers that actually ARE supported with evidence in the passage but it’s not the “best” answer. How do you recommend going about that issue?
That's a really common question trap that the AAMC likes to use. Good on you for recognizing somewhere you can improve! I would emphasize choosing an answer that ANSWERS the question. Lots of choices can be factually correct or supported by the passage, but they might not actually give an answer to the question at hand. Try that and let me know how it goes Brandon! Hope that helps :)
Hi Eric! I left you a dm on insta but I was just wondering if you had advice on how to do content review. I’m reading the Kaplan books and I’ve been taking notes + doing practice questions but I feel like this process is tedious and not beneficial in the long run.
This is SO HELPFUL !!! I know you said for CARS, its easier to work your way down i.e. 15 minutes to 10 minutes to 8 minutes per passage with time. But ideally on the actual exam, do you recommend spending 4 minutes reading the passage?
Ideally, you want to spend as little time as possible reading so long as you grasp the passage to sufficiently answer the questions. Unfortunately, I can't tell you an exact number because you read differently than I do, but I found 5 minutes to be a good benchmark. You may find it better to do 4 minutes or 6 minutes, etc. but that will all come with practice! Hope that helps :)
Eric Sun MD thank you! I am following a prep company and they told me not to highlight but after watching your video, I started highlighting and it made a world of a difference.
tbh I like your method more compared to the others that say either to read the whole passage (no notes/highlighting) and answer or write small sentences for each paragraph, too time consuming imo. I'd rather spend that time attacking the questions. Thanks!
AYYYYY I AM SO PROUD! I know there must have been a TON of work in getting this score, but I would love to think that my video helped you at least a little bit. Congrats on the score! That's fantastic!

Do you offer CARS tutoring sessions??

Hi this is for future references about the tips (also probably a little easier to have time stamps for people to quickly look through!)

This was really helpful! I went from always missing like 1 or 2 questions on JW to now getting 100
This was extremely in depth. Good job

Not a true walkthrough. He walks you through how he would do it but doesn’t do a good job throughly explaining incorrect answers.
This was very helpful! You make it look so effortless. I'm going to do practice CARS passages today and will give your strategy a try. :)

Great video! Did you read the passage beforehand? Or was this the first time reading it?
I did try to get a sense of the passage before recording so I could make a stronger and more helpful tutorial :)
Eric Sun MD tbh I think it would be MUCH better for us if you make a video when you read the passage for the first time.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see what I can do in the future to integrate this into my videos :)
Hey Erik, is your method for CARS comprised of only highlighting?
