Todays Virtual Geo Tour comes from sunny Arizona, where the rocks are a fascinating mix of recent Volcanics lined with copper, billion year old metamorphics only revealed by cutting streams and uplift, limestones from ancient seas that are folded, faulted and intruded to form metals like lead and zinc and copper and gold deposits, and layers of colorful sedimentary rocks. The rocks pile high to make mountains we call the Sky Islands that are only divided by a border between two nations but otherwise run continuously into Mexico, past the many once abundant Cienegas and desert wetland environments. The Sonoran Desert is a treasure chest of biological and geological wonder. Today, I’m simply overviewing some of the main rock units you can discover in south central Arizona (around Tucson and to the border). Northern Arizona has some other interesting stuff going on but we will save that for a future tour. Enjoy!

My dad was a geoligist for Philip Petroleum, a true rockhead through and through, and I'm a chip off the old block. Visited my aunt in Oracle and was hungry to learn about the geology. Way to go!

Before my mom passed, I would tease her by saying I was going out west to search for rocks. She would be surprised I'm thinking of doing just that. Thanks for being such an amazing teacher.

if I found this channel years ago when I was in my geology classes, I could probably have been able to visualize and understand quicker if I went home from class and immersed myself in these videos. Great job, you remind me of my aunt, she is in the forest service and if I hike with her she knows everything.

Wonderful to hear! That’s exactly my hope for this channel - to bring the field and real-world examples to anyone who can’t physically be there at the time. I, too, longed for the visualizations while taking intro courses, which is part of the inspiration for the project. Thanks for being here :)

@@LetsGoGeo you have done a good job! Most of the vocabulary you use in the videos are learned in the first true geology class most people take in college. Including mineral and rock names/types. Your videos are a very great tool for the visual learners (myself). I’d recommend you keep doing these videos for our future geologists. Once again, great job!

Thanks! Glad to have you here. In general, copper and zinc mining vicinities have the blues, sometimes turquoise to be found. Know that absolute ID on turquoise is actually difficult in the field with a little sample. But plenty of great varieties in AZ around old copper mines, as well as other fun minerals. I will do a quick overview of AZ mineral hunting soon !

Question since you are doing this mineral video is that what you are doing. Do you also hunt gold .reason I ask is it seems to me that in order to know we're gold is you must have this knowledge as well..

It all depends on what types of rocks and minerals you are after. This video provides a general overview. From there, you can decide which minerals coincide with which types of rocks and geologic environments.

Best place that's close to you is going to be just east of safford/ Thatcher. That's where you're going to get your fire agate/chalcedony , Apache tears saffordite turquoise peridot and a bunch of stuff dragged in by The gila River from the lava fields in New Mexico topaz ECT..

At the 3:00 mark I stopped watching because of the poor lighting on your face. I can see your lips move but from there up all the rest of your facial features disappear into a cavernous shadow created by the bill of the cap you are wearing.
And pretty much the first three minutes are just you talking.
Better luck in your next production. Maybe get some help on the camera from someone who knows what they are doing.
    Sincerely,
    Pete

I am not a production company, just a girl who loves geology. The information is good for someone who wants to learn, perhaps not for someone studying facial features. 😆
