If you want a cheep source for 134a thats what is in air duster.. Most dusters contain one of two chemicals: tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) or difluoroethane (HFC -152a).

As someone who is certified to work on these systems, I think it's really cool that you made it work with those parts! Good idea using that syringe cap as a metering device. Very creative. I'd love to see how it does with a fan running on the evap coil. That being said, there's a few things I don't like that I feel should be addressed. First is that you lost a lot of refrigerant. Some loss is to be expected, but losing the whole charge multiple times is just negligent. 134A is a greenhouse gas after all, which is why it's beginning to be phased out and replaced with eco-friendlier HFO refrigerants. You didn't remove the air from the system first either. Not only does it ruin the performance of the system, but it also ruins the refrigerant. Second, when you mentioned that you can use any refrigerant. If you put R410A in that system for example, you would blow every line and maybe even that condenser coil due to the much higher pressures. If you put propane (R290) or butane (R600) in it, there's a good chance it will literally just explode into flames. That compressor is only designed to work with R134A and nothing else. You need a compressor rated for flammable gases to use them safely as refrigerants. Other than that stuff, cool video! I always liked the idea of clear lines in these systems. They just have to be rated for the right pressures so they don't pop!

I'm what is known in the UK as a Category 1 FGas engineer, while I appreciate the video creator is yound and VERY intelligent for his age it did make cringe for the reasons you pointed out. But well done to the creator if you carry on progressing, find some funding and get the tools and hardware (maybe some refrigerant handling pointers or training) and experiment away, who knows where you might end up if you can make it work with hose pipes!
hi i have made this setup to but properly can you explain to me that when i turn on the condensor fan i get almost no coling but when condensor is hot all of my pipes freazes only for 2minuts help
Why are peltier and ice based coolers "fake" AC? They may not be the most efficient, but they are real with actual capability to reduce the temp of a certain amount of air. Middle eastern cultures have used "Cooling towers" to reduce the heat inside buildings without refrigerants. The US, used ice based cooling from ice blocks cut off from Alaska. Some companies now use ice based cooling to reduce costs. As long as it serves it's purpose, it's "real". You just need to have the proper application for whatever technology.
Try copper lines and use a piercing valve so you can pull a vacuum first to remove non condensables. And definitely want to get a fan pushing air across the condensing coil(the big fridge coil)
if you ever make a part 2, i would recommend using copper lines. they can be found pretty easily. also pull a vacuum on your system before charging, as mixing water and refrigerant can cause a pretty corrosive reaction that could destroy your components. and use pag 46 or pag 100 oil r134a. but pretty impressive though for what it is and the materials used! looking forward to what you make in the future.
I'm seeing so many problems here but I'll let you figure those out on your own since this is a great proof of concept and you obviously have some smarts going on. Just don't let yourself get content and realize there's still a lot of improvements you can make with little to no extra tools and materials.

This is a really helpful tutorial. I'm trying to turn a 12v cooler into an A/C for a teardrop camper. At first I tried just filling the cooler with water and using a USB water pump to transfer cooled water to a 360mm pc radiator with 3 fans, but it's just too inefficient to keep up with the thermal load. It can only maintain a few degrees ∆T. I think the next step is to remove the compressor from the cooler and run refrigerant straight to the radiator like you've done here.

This is a really cool project, although I'd recommend doing more intensive testing to make sure it can hold the pressure before putting refrigerant in it because that stuff isn't great it get exposed to not to mention the whole hole in the ozone layer thing. Have to admit I want to try this though.

Asking again for one more time here 2 months later, do I REALLY need to use high pressure hose or just a normal hose would fully work? The compressor and the condenser are placed outside on a window, and connected by a high pressure hose. The indoor unit is a modified desk evaporative swamp cooler (specifically Arctic Air, the front-side plastic part fan is cut off using a dremel to for a custom copper evaporator to be fit in) and it blows air through the evaporator. This cooler SHOULD be more effective and way more long lasting than using swamp cooler by using an ice + water, and unlike using only water, works in humid conditions.
Can you try at making a reversing valve for this so its not just a ac but in-fact a heat pump also steel braided motor cycle break line can take the temperatures and pressures im gonna build on with that as the hose and if i can find one cheap use an actual thermal expansion valve
Expanding and contracting the gas increasing the surface area in the PC cooler allows that to be the evaporator and immediately reducing the heat over the span of the heat exchanger no matter how small

I build air conditioners from coolers circulating ice water through 480mm radiator 65mm thick. I use strong 120mm fans to pull air through. Pretty cold. What size 12v compressor to ice up the radiator and keep it cold flowing air through radiator? And would 2 small compressors do the job?
You think that two 240x120 mm pc radiators with 12v cooling fans can cool down the hot refrigerant? Or you need a bigger radiator for cooling down the hot refrigerant?
This is extremely valuable in that old fridges are everywhere. Any idea how many watts this consumes? It would be constantly running right? I have an offgrid property in Florida with a tiny 4x8x6 shack under the trees and with a insulated roof and screened walls. I'm looking for a way to cool it down while the sun is out. My power source is a 500w solar panel in the sun. Dumb question but how safe and legal is this?
If you had put a vacuum, remove all the air inside of the system then fill the refrigerant the system would cool much faster and you would achieve much lower temperatures.

Also if you disconnect the high side from compressor and let it go to atmosphere then pinch the high side tubing you will evacuate the air from system then place hose on high side while still pinched. Try and keep air from entering place hose clamps and the charge. It will work way better.

Only thing alternative i can think of is a peltier cooler. Most micro fridges (for like 4 cans of soda) are cooled by peltier cooling. But it's far less efficient for large applications.

Would the compressor burn tho? I mean most of the newer ones does have thermal cutoff, but those teeny tiny compressors aren't really designed to cool a whole room, so I can't imagine them lasting that long

@@MCircuits I have a 450w air conditioner (5000 btu), so this thing he's building is not much of a difference in savings. I thought he could make like a below 200w, then it'll be a device worth building.
The freezing up is not good for the system as a whole... you don't want it freezing because then your going to be feeding the compressor a bunch of liquid and not vapor.. you want the liquid refrigerant to go from a liquid to a gas in the evaporator then the gas goes to the compressor and the cycle starts over. 🤔

That's fantastic! Even though I know the refrigeration cycle inside and out, it never clicked for me how simple it is to just do it.
With all the ac systems I fix as a mechanic Iv been tempted to build a system for my home in the furnace to create central air.

you wouldnt need a txv for this small of a system...his improv orfice hole metering device is fine...a capillary tube would work as well

It is very easy to make AC unit. What is hard is to make an efficient AC unit. And it's all about it...
Propane and butane are flammable gasses.
If you charge your AC with those it's likely it's going to explore or catch fire.
Hose blows up as there is back pressure use pressure regulator with return line this should fix the problem

Is it possible to make a system that works without a compressor? I hope you added the oil too.
Only thing alternative i can think of is a peltier cooler. Most micro fridges (for like 4 cans of soda) are cooled by peltier cooling. But it's far less efficient for large applications.
Can u tell me if this things can make a room/living space colder? Coz i'll gonna make one of those if it works .. will add fans for it to make sure room will cooled ..

I think if there is a leak or any problem while using butane there could be an accident because it's flamable it could blow away also

Would the compressor burn tho? I mean most of the newer ones does have thermal cutoff, but those teeny tiny compressors aren't really designed to cool a whole room, so I can't imagine them lasting that long

@@MCircuits I have a 450w air conditioner (5000 btu), so this thing he's building is not much of a difference in savings. I thought he could make like a below 200w, then it'll be a device worth building.
The freezing up is not good for the system as a whole... you don't want it freezing because then your going to be feeding the compressor a bunch of liquid and not vapor.. you want the liquid refrigerant to go from a liquid to a gas in the evaporator then the gas goes to the compressor and the cycle starts over. 🤔
