Licenses for breeding (can’t breed without a license). Spaying and neutering animals that do not carry the traits that are desired. Pups that won’t pass on their genes are sold at a discount, whereas the breeder could charge more for the dogs with the desired traits (even more for breeding rights), and there would need to be regulated matches (endorsed by the AkC and such) for subsequent breedings. I truly have no idea what I’m talking about or if it’s even feasible. I have a background in ecology- so I do know how selective breeding works- but throw money, power, and greed into the mix and I’m out of my depth.
I believe that the breeding for "Extreme" conformational features definitely need to be banned. Health issues are so horriffic in so many breeds...and then there's the GSD, please don't let me start on that abuse of breeding for the spinal slope...
You're spot on that many breeds are affected with different health issues that are breeding induced. Did you see the GSD that won best in show at Crufts a couple of years ago? Heart breaking! In fact I included a bit about this years Crufts as well in a bit of a rant about breeding if you haven't seen it here: ruclips.net/video/sIaiXM4OtDI/видео.html
It’s sickening. These dog shows do not care about the well being of these animals. I honestly believe they need to cease all dog competition shows. No natural dog should experience as much health problems as these breeds.
Charles Thomas I know the KC people care about the breed, but not a lot of people do. I go by age, personality and gender (sometimes males can’t get along).
It makes me sad that most breed standards for dogs is exactly what makes them sick. We should stop breeding for aesthetics. Dogs that were originally created to do jobs and work along side their humans are no longer capable of those jobs. Breed for health and performance, not looks.
Can’t we just breed them back to their original state? Didn’t they have less problems then? I think that there should be a limit to how flat a dog’s snout can be from breeding. It should be illegal to breed dogs to have snouts that are less than one inch
It really is sad that dog breeds that generally have such a friendly temperament such as pugs and cavaliers are bred to be so unhealthy. By banning them we would get rid of those wonderful natures of them. I really wish that some day the breed standards will be changed for good, in order to have a healthier, more natural version of these dogs in the future. I'm no expert, but I feel like introducing a bit of new blood to the brachycephalic breeds from healthier breeds would be good idea.
You're absolutely right that a ban would mean losing some amazing character traits. Even breeding within the available gene pool could result in better health so long as the standards were changed to focus on health rather than looks
The issue with some breeds is that the breed standard is not the problem, but the "trends" set by some breeders and what is rewarded in the show ring by some judges. It can be frustrating to breeders who try to stick to the breed standard in a way that would benefit the breed and its health rather than falling for fads. 🤷🏽♀️
Our Pets Health Yeah unfortunate how that's all connected when it means the addition of things that can cause damage like this to a breed. :( I hope to see things change in these breeds. It's for the dogs' benefit!
My parents got a Frenchie, I was asking for adoption, but they got a breed anyways. I fell in love with her. Never any of my dogs ever snorted, or made weird sounds out of the nose while playing. She is on a healthy height. But that made me really concerned, wish she had s better nose
You make perfect sense. I think there needs to be some kind of incentive to buy spayed/neutered dogs from health oriented breeders So that they person can get a “pedigree” dog that will not contribute “less desirable” genes down to the next generation. I think the biggest issue that will need be tackled is people wanting to get these popular dogs (and even breed them), without considering the overall health of the breed. I could possibly see a license needed to breed dogs to be sure they are putting the health of the animal first- but I know too many people who just mate two animals together in order to make money off of the puppies.
Sadly- yes. A ban is the only thing that will stop this suffering. Why? Because the problem with these breeds are no news. But Still the extreme version of these dogs are awarded at shows and desired by buyers. people involved with these dogs are not going to change.I have first hand experience with all the problems that comes with these breeds and it is heartbreaking and the cruelest type of abuse. How fun is it not being able to go out and play in the summer? To choke om your tongue? Or not being able to walk right ? Or go for a run? It is so fun to have a deformed pig sounding dog..
@@alphaarx3055 I’m a dog lover, and I would NEVER buy these breeds. Thank you I thought I was a monster for breeding dogs I been call a monster but I see my dogs as my family and it hurts to give them are way I believe one day we will fix them and my pugs and bulldogs are very happy and healthy
Stop breeding them if they have breathing problems please. Maybe cross them with another kind of dog, so that they will look similar but have more natural noses.
this vet is dead on i wish people would pay more attention to this matter you mit need to out cross a little to get a better dog the genetic pool is all most done for alot of these breeds
Yes! Oh my God those dogs can't breath. Every time they breath they are suffering, that and Bull terrier, King Charles spaniel. These breeds need to be mate with another dog to fix their deformity. And people get these dogs, because they are cute. A lot people don't even know this cause by inbreeding. Hence why I will never own one. Owning one is simply dog abuse, because they are suffering. Screw the breed standards. Breed standards have screwed dogs up.
Good grief, owning one isn't abuse! I have a very healthy pug. Yes, he sometimes breathes a little hard, as most pugs do. But the thing is, he was a stray. Long story short, no owner was ever found and I couldn't find a new home for him. I didn't want a dog, but the only option at the time was taking him to a shelter. I opted to keep him. You're saying that's abuse?
Somewhat related but can grunting in dogs be bad, then? 🤔 I have a Mini Aussie I got from a reputable breeder who cares about health when breeding who has grunted since maybe 12 weeks old. I thought something was wrong with him but he's seen numerous vets (and I've brought it up) and none of them have been concerned given he doesn't really get winded the way a super flat nosed dog may get and he doesn't exhibit other symptoms that are concerning (no snoring, and he doesn't just grunt all the time). That, and I then learned Aussies can be a very vocal breed with diverse sounds and some do some interesting sounds. He's not much of a barker. He has various grunts, instead! He has a certain grunt if he's being inquisitive in sniffing (though if he's using his snuffle mat, for example, he doesn't usually grunt), if he's tired, if he's happy, etc. He usually does it when interacting with us vs just while on his own doing something.
Grunting can be bad in that it can be a sign of pain or airway problems but you're absolutely right that some breeds and some individuals are just very talkative and make a whole range of different noises!
I belive that they shouldnt ban them but maybe breed them so there faces can be a bit longer it doesn't have to be like a bigger dogs nose but more like how a smaller chihuahuas is still small but not flat faced
I’m convinced that most vets won’t tell owners to stop breeding/buying these dogs because they can make mad moola when the owners need surgery for their dogs to breathe.
it's actually vets who are leading the call for better, more responsible breeding and calling out the breeding community and kennel clubs responsible for setting breed standards
@@OurPetsHealth I hope you’re right. I do think some have great intentions, but I’m sure others are thinking about lining their pockets, instead of the well-being of animals. Popular or not, these breeds should not exist due to their suffering and deformities.
Hi , your video is very informative and great. In the future I think your videos could be even better if you use pictures in them to illustrate different looks and issues of the dogs. I have a pug myself with longer nose and neck to prevent the breathing issues. She can be outside in 31 degrees and play. She has so much more energy than regular pugs. I was really careful in choosing the right puppy and I went to get independent healt evalutation at two different vets that gave her a clean bill of health, to be sure that she was healthy before I got her. People trust sellers if they claim to have visited vets. In my view one should always get an independet medical exam of the dog before buying it.
@@OurPetsHealth thank you 😊, I tried to do as much research as possible before buying her. Your video is very informative for people who want to buy pugs. You should do one of Basset's issues as well 😊
I don't think I got it. I know all about the pugs health issues. What is the right thing to do then? Buying a puppy from a good breeder or not adopt at all?
Well, a 'good breeder' could mean one that has the best pedigree dogs for the dog shows....which means they will be the ones with the most squashed faces and the most breathing problems. Actually a good breeder should be breeding for dogs health and happiness, not shape or for money and prizes. If you like pugs you can adopt a cross breed pug, either from a shelter or a breeder of them. Then you can see if they have a less flat face, and that they can breath OK.

I’m gonna be a breeder but I’m only gonna breed for mixed dogs not for certain features
Our breeder is a kenel club member and she breeds responsable with healthy checks for spine, eyes, breathing and if her dogs dont pass she will not breed them.
Buying from a breeder who is selecting for healthy characteristics makes a huge difference. When you see the parents and they make a lot of noise breathing or if their noses look really narrow (I have a picture on my website here: ourpetshealth.com/health/should-flat-faced-dogs-be-banned ) then the puppies will likely be the same when they grow up. If their noses are open and they are running around well without snorting then their health is likely to be better. hope that helps
Yeah i found it, was my bad ... Thanks :) I really want a french bulldog, but dont want a suffering dog.. Do you have a "alternative" for frenchies? Or some tips or questions beside the narrow nose and heavy breathing i can ask the seller? (sorry for bad english)
Sorry Henrik, missed the question. There are plenty of other breeds out there if your are deciding a Frenchie is not for you. I'm a big fan of Border Terriers but we all have personal preferences! Best thing is to ask yourself a few questions about temperament as well as size, medical issues and age. There is a summary here: ruclips.net/video/vAk955aWWSI/видео.html I also go through some questions to ask and where you should consider getting a dog from in this video: ruclips.net/video/gupb-MlvsQU/видео.html . Really observing the mother and pups is the big thing. If you're looking at any breed with known problems then asking the breeder about them and if their dogs have any known issues is important. Clearly they might not tell the truth but you might be able to judge how honest they are based on their answers (for example do they deny there is any problem in the whole breed - which would be cause for concern). Hope that helps. Let me know what pup you end up getting!
Ik how to make a healthy pug. Mix a pug and a chihuahua instead of breeding pugs and other pugs. Or just mix a long snooted small dog breed and mix it with the flat faced dogs. So they have a long snoot.
"Responsible" breeding for pets is cruel. Unless.you need a specific breed for the reason it was bred, you don't need it as a pet. If you so desperately need a pet, adopt from a shelter. Yes, you'll likely get a dog with some distinguishable breed features, but at least you're giving that dog that someone gave up on a chance. Plenty of people that adopt from "responsible" breeders drop their purebred German Shepherd or Labrador retriever or Husky at the shelter when they get to be too much. And yes. Flat faced dogs should be BANNED. I don't hate the dogs themselves, but they should never have been bred.
I breed chihuahuas. None of mine that I know of have ended up in shelters. I make sure they go to good homes, and tell them they can return the dog to me if they have any problems. There is a waiting list for them.....they are in short supply. The owners want a small and healthy breed puppy will find it hard to get one from a shelter. Most dogs in UK shelters are staffy or staffy mixes, or lab mixes, lurchers and other medium to large dogs. But, I don't like pedigree dog breeders, as they are more concerned with their dogs looks and shape rather than health. My chihuahuas would not win 'best in show' as they would be considered not the right shape or size. My dogs are bred to be healthy and strong, with longer legs and not have the egg / apple shaped huge heads that seem popular in the dog shows.
Not really true I make my French bulldog run for hours everyday and my French bulldog breeds normally with his mate so it’s only bad owners that have these problems
Just because your Frenchie doesn't have this problem (which is fantastic) doesn't make this a huge breed issue that is being seen more and more regularly. Healthy dogs like your show that breeding the right way could easily change the situation. Its a bad breeder not owner problem
What do you think? How can we best help these dogs as well as other breeds?
By not breeding them anymore! All dogs that are unhealthy or deformed should be illegal.
