- NEVER FEED YOUR FISH AGAIN
CREATE A FOOD WEB IN YOUR AQUARIUM
The aquatic environment is unique.
It provides deep oxygen starved mud where aquatic plants get their nourishment. I
t also provides a rich biomass of leaf mulch where countless micro organisms grow and provide food for fish.
How do we create both of these environments in our aquarium? Father Fish is here to explain it alLL.

Father Fish is an old time fish keeper. For 70 years he has kept fish. These are his simple, easy, bullet-proof methods for keeping healthy, happy tropical fish in an environment that can truly be called a living aquarium.
Louis Foxwell adopted the role of Father Fish many years ago when he decided to open a tropical fish store as a retirement business. He had been a missionary, following in his father's footsteps for 25 years. Both men served the same congregation of deaf worshipers.
Tropical fish were Father fish's constant companion throughout his life. He tells a wonderful story about his grandmother who kept fish in Berlin, Germany as a child.

Father fish is the number 1 resource for fish keeping. I am so glad I found his channel when I started out. My fish keeping journey has been extremely easy and rewarding. Happy fish, clear water, and minimal maintenance. It's so easy. I collect sand from a riverbed, throw it on top of some local swamp mud, and jam my tanks with as many different aquatic plants as I can. Profuse plant life. Clear water. Happy fish. Tons of babies. Doesn't seem to matter if I feed the tanks or not, but they go nuts for live brine shrimp which I pick up occasionally when I buy aquatic plants. My guppies nibble my fingers when I move stuff around in the tank, pretty wild.
How is the cleaning process?
@@albertovelazquez4194 I don't clean it at all! Clear water. My maintenance is just removing plants so the fish have room to swim and adding water when it gets low. Have had extremely reliable tanks.
I think you want to find the right amount of light, plant life, and CO2 - I get my CO2 from my fish. The trick is finding that balance. It takes some time for a tank to get there. I think having a lot of light and plants to start is a good idea. Then adding some breeding fish and feeding them for awhile so they produce enough livestock to get the CO2 up to the right amount for the plant/light combo
could an aquarium that has been fed and has a betta and a few algae on the plants survive without receiving any more food?? would the small creatures that live in the aquarium be enough?
Thank you Father fish! Inspiring
I'm a beginner. I have two goldfish and want to give them a more natural and happy environment ☺
I don't know where to start and a little scared to take the leap into creating a natural tank, and so I'm really enjoying listening to your advice and knowledge on the subject
Great Content!
I'm going to change my tank to a deep bed today. I've been watching a lot of channels describing the fancy dancy gravel routine that has never inspired me. I grateful that you show a better method.
You can do it!
HEY RUclips! Father Fish is out there, and WE 👏 WANT 👏 HIM 👏 BROADCASTED 👏 📢 thank you, father fish. I am so glad I found your channel!
HELLO HEIDI!! Delighted to have you with us. Please come on over to DISCORD and join the 24/7 conversation. LOTS of fun, help, and information. Great people too. Just like you! discord.gg/8DmmRE9Nq4
I was always interested in the natural world, but one Christmas many years ago my aunt bought me a little microscope. The absolute joy I found in examining droplets of pond water. So many species, wow. That sense of wonder has never left me
And today your aquarium sustains all the life you have seen in your microscope.
@@FatherFish exactly, instead of a drop of pond water I see the same in my aquariums, for me it's the only way
Howdy Father Fish. I have kept at least one aquarium going, most times since 1968. But after seeing your videos of a natural system; I gonna break down my tank. It is cycled and heavily planted, ready for fish now.
I love the idea of a more natural way. Thanks so much for this information.
Happy to be here for those who appreciate the natural aquarium.
My favorite "Fishkeeping Tech" videos is where someone talks about the nitrogen cycle, and how to get it started.......but also has to do 50% or more water changes every week
pretty silly "Cycle" if you ask me
Glad I found your channel, started back in the hobby from 20 years ago......was freaking out at why I wasn't doing water changes back then....and why I had to do them now
Should have known it was just companies trying to make money, Plants, live food, deep substrate and time is all you really need
Thass right! Old water is quality water.
This reminds me of the flightless fruit fly culture I kept for my cordon blue finches.
Would bettas do good in this type of tank? Or should I still feed them daily?
I add chopped up leaf litter to all my tanks every fall. also a couple years ago I fed some red wigglers to my fish . some of them burrowed into the substrate and are still alive in the tank.
leaf litter is a terrific idea. The worms leave me puzzled. My understanding is that terrestrial worms drown when placed in water.
@@FatherFish I too was surprised when I noticed there were some living in the substrate . I got them from Uncle Jims Worm Farm online , as far as I know the are just red wigglers .
I use them as composers for kitchen scraps , and occasionally feed the baby ones to my fish .
some survive and grow to full size worms in the substrate.
[thank, you father fish for you're video and greatful info]👍
I love the wisdom you re-introduce into this hobby. However, how can I adapt this information to an existing, established planted aquarium with no mud under a deep-ish, undisturbed gravel bed?
yes. Simply cap it with sand.
@@FatherFish Thank you! Has this application ever been the topic of one of your videos?
One of your best. Ever. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
HEY! Melissa. Thank you! Don't be a stranger. We are all friends here!
Can I do this with my cloud minnows and amano shrimp? Thank you!
Absolutely Isabella! Nice to hear from you, Love you.
Please make a hands on video how this is done. Would love to see it. What kind of leaves should be put into the tank?
Working on it Suman
@@FatherFish Can't wait 😍😍
Make sure it’s pesticide free!
the harder days of aquarium are the days we dont have anything to do. people are very anxious and they always want to do something
Thank you.
You're welcome SirDiesALot!
could an aquarium that has been fed and has a betta and a few algae on the plants survive without receiving any more food?? would the small creatures that live in the aquarium be enough?
If the food web is vigorous, yes.
Sweet video.!!
Thank you Ram.
Could we mix in or just leave the dieing leaves from the plants that are all ready in the tank? Or should we add other leaves to the tank?
All of the above. We need to bring fauna and flora that do not now exist in the aquarium. This is best done by collecting material from healthy streams and ponds.
@@FatherFish will do thanks FF 💞
I wonder how small of a tank this food web system can be practiced on... I have a 3 gallon plastic tank doing nothing and alot of temptation....
That will work
@@FatherFish 😮😁
I say create a fish-less tank with a deep substrate and some best choice plants for your water parameters. Then connect that tank to your fish tank via a water bridge that doesn’t allow fish back through. Slowly pump water from the fish side to the refuge.
Your plan creates a refugium sump. Very helpful. We are going for a full on biotope with substantial microfauna.
@@FatherFish If you create fish less refuges inside the tank then this could be more plausible. You could try to build a moss wall or moss tube that keeps out fish and has plenty of plenum for the microfauna to safely multiply. Kind of like reef-keepers copepod hotels.
@@chadtitan4159 Clever idea Chad. I like it. A thick media offers this protection.
Hi. Don't these things rotting down cause acidity & other things that put the water out leading to toxicity for fish? I know in nature it doesn't but that waters always on the move so these toxins cannot build up.
In a balanced tank the toxins are consumed and become nutrients. It is all about the cycle of life.
When you are building an aquarium should the bottom mud layer come from the pond / river? You said anaerobic layer at the bottom, would it be better to get deep and get the sulfury stuff or would it be better to mix the top dirt because you are looking for the microfauna that live in the system?
The macrofauna go on the top with rotting leaves. My formula calls for potting soil, an organic compost or native muck, peat moss or other humus and a supplement containing necessary minerals.
Hello father fish, a balanced tank is a happy tank! 😊 Would a small amount of substrate still be anorobic? I don't think I would have anorobic environment in my fresh water tanks exceptone having about 3 or 4 inches dirt from yard, mayb in my reef tank the rocks are big but porose sands about 1.5 to 2.5 inches
At the deepest there is very limited 02.
Thank you father fish ...u have really been an eye opener.....
LA! Don't go to sleep. Miles to go....
@@FatherFish you are truly true... shall Definitely try n keep up.
Will the old leaves and stems from the plants in the aquarium that falls on the bottom be counted as the humic substances contributing to the food chain?
Yes if the mycelium and bacteria that break them down are available.
What about pine straw?
If it is thoroughly dried after haven fallen from the tree it is fine.
Father fish needs to get a white board and a pen...
Does the starter come from dry leaves in the river
yes
I am a beginner aquarist. I found out that the shops sell a special powder for *growing biofilm* to feed shrimps. What do you think about *growing biofilm* to feed small fish and the fry?
THAT IS WHAT THE VIDEO TEACHES.
Is it still ok to have a deep substrate of 4" soil, plus the 1" sand, 1" sand mixed with organic leaf matter (total of 6" substrate) in 29 gallon tank?
THAT HAS NEVER BEEN OK!! NEVER more than one inch of soil The sand formulation is fine.
@@FatherFish Oh, dear! I'm sure glad I asked!😱😳 I guess I was under the impression that the soil layer had to be a minimum of 1" inch deep, but 3-4" was better in order to feed the plant roots for years (if not decades) to come. Is there a reason that it shouldn't be any deeper than 1"? Just curious.
I've joined your Discord so I'll be able to ask more questions while I set up my 29G. I want to convert all my tanks to FF tanks so my fish are happy and healthy! 🐠 🥰 Thanks so much for all your help!
I wonder if it will become anaerobic. Interested to see Father fish's answer.
@@cmorrison5466 is it because the the thick layer of soil makes it harder for the plants to absorb nutrients?
@@Pesticide7G No, it's because too much soil with added ferts will cause the tank water to become toxic. The nutrients eventually leach through the sand layer and into the water column if you have too much dirt and/or too little sand. The result isn't good. Also, the smaller the tank (5-10 gal) the smaller the dirt layer. A 1/2-inch layer is more than enough. The 2" or more sand cap is very important to contain the dirt and nutrient release.
I did this incorrectly in my 10G tank, but correctly in the 20G and 29G. The results in the latter two are phenomenal! But the 10G has not faired well. Now that I know what to do, I will probably start it over.
Also, it's much cheaper to buy the Father Fish soil supplement than to make it unless you know you are setting up a large quantity of large tanks. But for the average home hobbyist, who may own a few nano tanks, it's cheaper to buy from FF (and way less messy).
all i have in my tank i gravel. could i just put some sand on top. without the dirt. or do i need to just take the gravel out and start over
Yes. Add 2" of sand to your gravel. It will grow plants. Do not ever clean it.
Have you ever heard of "Mel's Mix" for outdoor gardening? It consists of compost, peat moss and perlite. Well, this mix can basically grow any land plant without the use of fertilizers or tilling. Your new ingredients are basically headed in that direction (leaf litter instead of peat moss). Aquatic plants aren't that different than nonaquatic ones it seems.
Yes. I know of Mel's Mix. The science for my formula is based on Dr Elaine Ingham's research on the food web. Here is her site: www.soilfoodweb.com/about/
hi father how are you. I'm looking forward to your live stream later. see you then.
Thank you Alex. See you then.
RUclips, share the knowledge
Is having earthworms in my dirted pond a sign that I am growing microfauna?
yes.
@@FatherFish Does it mean that earthworms are also good in aquarium?
@@VipinBorole These are an aquatic segmented worm.
so 1 inch of dirt and 2 inch of sand is no longer the minimum?
yes. No change. We are adding humus to the top 1" ofsand
lol no more 2" father fish realize that roots cant penetrate sand as easy as it looks so 1" makes more sense when using sand
@@ilovegirls69styleMissed it by a mile. We are mixing the top 1" of sand with humus to increase the food web. STILL 2" of sand.
What's on your head? Do you recommend buying this? How does is called? Have you a link?

hello ff
is it possible to have that much leaf litter in an mbuna tank??
seems to me like a mission impossible🙃🙃🙃
Litter and algae are the foundation of a successful Mbuna system.
this i'm sure
what i'm not so sure about is will a sand bed of leaf litter will stay about becuase these guys always play with the substrate and make a mess
0:15 Mold needs air to live to breath. Therefore, when vegetables are fermented, we try to prevent contact of vegetables with air: they must be under water. So how do you want to grow mold in an aquarium?
