People across the country are growing native plants in their backyards and then registering their contributions on the map, sometimes falling pretty close to one another in the same county. Could be something as little as a potted plant or as large as a whole field or planted forest, no matter the effort. 10,000+ strong and counting. She mentioned hunters paying to hunt. Isn't this the time to allow the herds to multiply rather than killing some for sport? No matter how much money the hunters bring in, this is a poor policy.

      One of the staff mentioned restoring the reserve as much as possible to the conditions that existed in the past. Those conditions included the various predators that preyed upon the bison: wolves, grizzlies, cougars and of course the native Americans. Viewed from that perspective, allowing limited hunting for pay is a reasonable decision. I assume there are specific restrictions on what can be harvested by hunters, to prevent any negative impact on the age and gender demographics of the herd. And because the reserve cannot operate and be maintained on a zero budget, the extra revenue would contribute to sustaining and expanding the reserve.

    • @Alexander-rq9he
      @Alexander-rq9he Год назад

      Hunting is a bad policy because hunters choose the biggest and healthiest looking animals as trophies whereas natural predators pick off the weak and sick - which keeps disease out of the herd populations. Hunting allows the sickly to dominate and disease to spread. Having said that, the reserve is large but of course can only sustain so many so their numbers must be managed.

If you buy a house or property, by law you have to write a check out for a few thousand $ to the land bank. This is the way they gain funds so they can buy more land. I suspect these people are following the same playbook... giving time this may happen here too.

    Good stuff. However, it is a little curious that the senior wildlife biologists in the video quite rightly talks of restoration, natural processes, keystone species, it is their hope "to have the ecosystem functioning fully as it once did". One of them responds with "how long have you got", when asked what species they hopes to see back.
    And yet, they neglect to talk about horses or equids in general, they get no mention, inspite of them being keystone species, inspite of their lengthy history in N.A. There is rather disappointingly no mention of the prairies species composition in the late pleistocene.
    Reinstating them on the prairie could help catalyse the restoration of the ecosystem, especially when coupled with herds of bison. They complement eachothers grazing, it would diversify the dung piles - provisioning additional resources for dung beetle communities and ofcourse the carrion they would provide. Bears and mountain lions are known predators of equids as well, which would add natural processes, dynamics and help restore functionality that hasn't been seen since the iceage.
    I'd be really interested in hearing the American prairies thoughts on this

    • @Wildman-lc3ur
      @Wildman-lc3ur Год назад

      Well thing is,the ecosystem has changed since the pleistocene and the feral horses that were introduced to the American west are quite different than the ones that existed during the pleistocene. Reintroducing large predators has been a plan for American prairie reserve but it's quite difficult to do
      As thiers much more work and government approval to do so. At best they could hope that free roaming cougars and wolves could establish themselves into the reserve naturally.

    • @tomgray3259
      @tomgray3259 Год назад

      @@Wildman-lc3ur I don't see how the ecosystem has changed ? Other than the fact productivity has fallen due to the extinction of certain species. Worth noting that many inhabitants of todays prairie were still there at the end of the pleistocene, that goes for plants as well as animals. Actually there is very little difference, feral horses and burros that roam the Americas are direct replacements for some of the extinct pleistocene equids and serve as perfectly good ecological replacements for them.

If not why or why not? I also wonder, should the local indigenous even be involved? If so why and if not, why not?

    • @tommosher8271
      @tommosher8271 11 месяцев назад

      You should be nervous esp when you consider there is no oversight and nothing holding these ppl to their promises. Once they acquire all the land they can do what ever they want and keep everyone off it in the name of conservation. Including selling all the oil and minerals to the highest bidder. This makes this a separate entity in Montana and Montana loses all the gains from the land that belong to the state and the ppl of Montana. And they aren't going to stop there.
