Remember when Pauline Hanson got angry and insisted on climbing Ulluru on the last day? She was going to make it her right and everyone's right. The problem was, she got a panic attack and got caught half way up and never made it. She went quiet about the subject after that. Pauline? Let's not go that direction. Just take my word for it. Some notorious politician...
We use the word "root" like having a root, getting a root or "I'm rooted" to express being exhausted.... but yes, the word root is almost interchangeable with the F word, though it isn't considered as rude to say it. Not that that stops many Aussies from using the F word very often.
Agree, but I would argue it’s a less offensive word that f-word. Like the British “shag” or U.S. “bang” (when used to refer to sex). Still, “root” is probably more interchangeable with all uses and instances of “f-word”.
Ryan, the people climbing the Rock is from an old photo. I've climbed the Rock twice back in the day and its a bloody dangerous climb. Its easy to slip or get blown off from strong wind gusts. I'm pleased with the decision to ban the climb for cultural reasons as well.
Those cultural reasons have only applied in the last 30 or so years. It was common for members of the tribe to climb the rock before that, often with visitors.
You know what I love most about this guy is his desire for knowledge. Oh, he types fast when researching, which makes it so much more enjoyable. Just to text this nearly killed me. Yep,8 min😢😅
“Shrimp on the barbie” was aimed directly at potential American tourists who were reluctant to do the long flight across the Pacific Ocean. We have prawns in various sizes. We don’t call them “shrimp”. In Australia, in the 1960s “The Shrimp” referred to the British model, Jean Shrimpton, who wore a minidress (just showing four inches above her knees) to the 1965 Melbourne Cup Day Horse Racing Carnival, which caused a scandal in Oz. Paul Hogan, ‘Hoges’ is slipping a King Prawn on the barbie, which most Aussies would not do. Since the prawn is already a bright coral colour, it has probably already been cooked. At a barbie we would probably eat cooked prawns cold. Overcooking makes prawn meat tough and leathery. Usually small prawns are used in hot cooked dishes like a stir fry or a pasta dish, Italian style. ‘Hoges’ had captured the attention of the US market via his ‘Crocodile Dundee’ character in his movies. So he was the salesman for the US market. Aussies found this out at the time of the ad to explain the weird use of “shrimp”. There was an increase in interest from Americans to the Australian Tourist Board. However, most Americans only get 2 weeks for annual vacation so actual US tourism to Oz may not have increased by much.
That and you would be AMAZED how less common it is in other nations for people to know how to swim. The U.S. is pretty good with children often learning in Schools but I think Australia just takes it to another level.
"Dropping in on someone" is exactly what it sounds like. If you're learning to surf you won't be out with people like they showed. Also if you only want to swim, people on boards shouldn't be there. They have their own designated space. Unless you're at an unpatrolled beach, which isn't recommended when you are here on holiday and aren't aware of the surf etc. Don't forget your sunscreen, that's what seems to "do in" a lot of tourists. The sun is fierce all year round.

A lot of people overseas don’t realise how big Australia is, if you get a scale map of Australia and superimpose it on a scale map of Europe the furthest eastern point is near Moscow and the furthest western point is out past Ireland. It is the only country that takes up a whole continent.
Most beach drownings in Australia are tourists who want to experience our beaches but venture into the water totally unprepared. Many of them can’t swim at all or are poor swimmers and most of the drownings occur at unpatrolled beaches where there is no one to rescue them. Rock fishermen being washed into the sea is responsible for several drownings each year. Despite the warnings they still venture onto the rocks without life vests. If you come here and want to go swimming at our beaches choose a patrolled beach, swim between the red and yellow flags set in place by the lifeguards and if you are a poor or non swimmer wear a flotation vest or something, there is no shame in being safe. And don’t forget your sunscreen! As for sharks, in 2023 the US had the most shark attacks with 36 and two of them were fatal, Australia had the second most with 15 and four of them were fatal. New Caledonia came in third place with just 3 attacks including one fatality.
Prawns, Tiger or King preferably, on a skewer with some vegetables, thrown on a barbie and charred slightly is a pretty common addition to BBQs (at least for SA) I think.
Surfing etiquette is as much about safety as common courtesy. Being run over by a surf board in deep water can be very dangerous, especially if the fins get you.
Just to be clear he said England would fit in Australia 60 times, he didn’t say the U.K (which comprises England, Scotland, Wales and and Northern Ireland)!
Do you know why we call them prawns outside of the US? Because that’s what they are. Shrimps are a different animal. It’s like calling a tiger a lion because hey, close enough?!
@@darrenlucas804 “Although shrimp and prawns belong to different suborders of Decapoda, they are very similar in appearance…” I.e. not even the same genus! 😊 I couldn’t find a similarly neat statement for bison v buffalo, but yes, same difference 😊 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrimp_and_prawn_as_food
We do have shrimp in Aus, but they're small and found in freshwater... great fishing bait. There are also shrimp on the coral reefs, also small or tiny. My son has some in a fish-tank. My father bought a prawn trawler with a legendary prawn fisherman mate of ours after we sold our pub in the far north. 60ft and decked out with great equipment for the time. There are droughts on land but also in our seas. I never went out with them, I was working on a cattle station as a fencer at the time... good times, hard work, daylight to dusk for $50 a day, I didn't care, lol. I wish I hadn't missed my time on the trawler though and more money. Lots of interesting things were dredged up with the prawn nets, just not enough prawns to really prosper. The drought eventually ended after we'd sold up... Nice video, Ryan.
Shark attacks are pretty rare, fatal ones even more so. Far more likely to be run over by a bus. Box jellies are a bigger threat up north and their season coincides with tourist season. So, swim in the pool, or visit Victoria instead.
Dropping in in the surf means catching a wave once someone else is already on it. Yes, it is generally one person a wave. I can get violent if the etiquette isn't followed; much more likey to get violent than an etiquette breach on the golf course. Surfers tend to prefer the winter - no tourists and bigger waves a lot of the time.
I don’t know too many of our friends that actually cook Prawns 🍤 on the BBQ, you mostly buy them already cooked and the best way to purchase them is straight off the boats coming in from out getting them, they are the best tasting Prawns, you can get uncooked prawns for making a special dish like garlic prawns or a curried prawns, You should take a look at Frazer Island, they have a resort over there or you can camp, my sister had a rental property over on Frazer Island, it’s not my ideal place to visit, too much sand Lol 😂, but it has some pretty spots over there to visit. Correction, Harrold Holt wasn't caught in a riptide (that was Vance Joy). Rumour has it that Harry wanted out of politics, ran off into the ocean, swam around to a different beach and disappeared. Since then he has built Australia's largest Drop Bear breeding facility, where they have specialised genetics to result in larger total body mass, and larger and sharper fangs.

root is a word for f'ing, not THE word for it, still funny in Primary School learning that the Wombat eats roots, shoots, and leaves. (Just like an Aussie bloke - eats, roots, shoots and leaves!)
Going missing in Oz is called "Doing a Harold Holt"... Also rhymes with "bolt"- as in bolting outa here. Edit- I climbed Uluru at the age of 7. This was back in the 1970s when there was no restrictions. (Coincidentally I am part Indigenous but wasn't aware of this fact as a child)
Another great video, all though I must say when there is a pom/brit doing a video about Australia, it will almost always have a fair amount of dislikes. We have a love/hate relationship with the poms here in Oz. 🤣
I think that the photo of al those people on Uluru is at least 30 years old, if not more. The offence that it causes to the Pitjantjatjara people, for whom Uluru is sacred, is now well known and respected. I don't know if it's actually banned or not, but you should not attempt to climb it.
Putting prawns on the barbie is mainly done in prawn fishing towns like the one I grew up in. Not so common in the rest of the country from what I hear.
"shrimp on the barbie" was originated in this advert. As already said elsewhere he says shrimp so Americans could know what he's talking about because they don't know 'prawn', but the main payoff in this is the size of the 'shrimp', which is huge compared to what people are used to seeing. Go to Australia and you'll eat really well is the message.

Fraser Island is now called K’gari and is a large sand island off Hervey Bay. Beautiful place to visit but you need 4 wheel drive vehicles and a lot of common sense. Apart from what a root vegetable grows from “A root” means sex in Australian slang. So the context you are talking about is every thing. What does the term root mean? starting point Root comes from the Latin word radix, which means "starting point," and you can think of the root of something as the place it starts from, whether that's the root of a tree, or the root of a problem.
My grandads best friend was the last to see him!he was the security guard that opened the gates to the beach where he was staying at the time!! Obviously no one was keeping a look out for him???
Root does not mean Fuck, Root means "sex" while Fuck means sex in other countries, in australia it actually means a lot of different things, and is also an adjective
In Australia it's "Fraser". Frasier is the US TV show. They didn't mention that you should always "swim between the red and yellow flags" when swimming at a patrolled beach. You don't want to be the stupid tourist who ends up on an episode of Bondi Rescue because you've swum in "backpackers rip"! They actually call a certain rip at Bondi this because so many backpackers get caught in it!!

The guy in the green tshirt is the voice behind the video about our Australian polymer notes!
Like calling a Bison a Buffalo?
@ Not sure but I think they’re different names for the same animal, not different animals?
@@darrenlucas804 “Although shrimp and prawns belong to different suborders of Decapoda, they are very similar in appearance…”
I.e. not even the same genus! 😊
I couldn’t find a similarly neat statement for bison v buffalo, but yes, same difference 😊
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrimp_and_prawn_as_food
My family combined have survived 25 Drop Bear attacks so we rooted them 🐨
Koalas= Eats, roots and leaves, you can take it literally or smutily, either way, you'd be right 😂👌🏼🤭
Wombats
I’d have thought koala, except they only eat leaves. So must be wombats.
Ok, no more "root". Does that go for hump, shag and pork as well?
Happy New Year 🥳 Ryan and Family. 🥳🥳
You can always find a beach with few people on it if you want to learn to surf. Nobody climbs the Rock. That photo was taken years ago before the ban.
When are you going to come to Oz 😅
There's not many killed by sharks in our oceans, the last one was in QLD yesterday...
ha ha ha - this is the first time I'm watching that it is actually "ARVO" - felt kinda special . not gonna lie.
Koalas do actually fall out of Trees, rarely, but they do. I remember being on a Bivouac as a Cadet in the early 80s, and getting a genuine warning, as you did with falling Gum Tree Branches, which happens quite a bit. In typical Aussie fashion, teasing on the Koala thing eventually turned it into the much bigger troll to Tourists that it is now. Haha.

Paul hogan used the word shrimp because the add was directed to the American tourist market.
Harold Holt is closed to climbing now.
Australians were horrified when Hoges said Shrimp....but Shrimps have long claws and Prawns don't. Different creatures.
Root is crass language.
Frazer Island is a Coral Sand (really fine sand) Island. inland Lakes can be a Sand Trap too. Happy New Year Wassa
I remember the "Put another shrimp on the barbie" line was used heaps after they said it in the Dukes of Hazzard movie. The way it is delivered kinda sounds like what you are imitating. But Dumb and Dumber did come out first...
cant believe he gave the Vegemite secret away, frazer island is where Eliza Frazer was shipwrecked, long story
And it has an aboriginal name now.
K’gari
root is a word for f'ing, not THE word for it, still funny in Primary School learning that the Wombat eats roots, shoots, and leaves. (Just like an Aussie bloke - eats, roots, shoots and leaves!)
Hi Ryan, people don't climb Uluru anymore. That would be an old photo.
Happy new year 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Going missing in Oz is called "Doing a Harold Holt"...
Also rhymes with "bolt"- as in bolting outa here.
Edit- I climbed Uluru at the age of 7.
This was back in the 1970s when there was no restrictions.
(Coincidentally I am part Indigenous but wasn't aware of this fact as a child)
The CC's "The dingos aren't in any major coastal shittie's" 💩😂🤣
Fun fact.
Melbourne us closer to Antarctica than it is to Darwin.
Banned since 2019😊
@@Dr_KAP Thanks for the detail
Yep banned since 2019, but if you looked at the video he's watching it was uploaded 8 years ago, so around 2016 or 2017.
@@michellewest3404 Thanks
Drop bears are real lol. If you don't believe it then you've never been near a koala bear at night when they scream 😂
6:48 there’s massive wire in Fenton around it so there’s no possible way of getting to the rock at all these days
Putting prawns on the barbie is mainly done in prawn fishing towns like the one I grew up in. Not so common in the rest of the country from what I hear.
Ya can't not keep saying 'happy arvo', you've made it your own! (I love it)
Uluru has been closed for climbing for quite a few years now. You can be fined upto $10000 for climbing it now.
The ad was for the American market.
It takes me a full three days to drive from Sydney to Perth.
Wow, you’re fast!
Just go ski diving over Ayer's Rock, beautiful view
"shrimp on the barbie" was originated in this advert. As already said elsewhere he says shrimp so Americans could know what he's talking about because they don't know 'prawn', but the main payoff in this is the size of the 'shrimp', which is huge compared to what people are used to seeing. Go to Australia and you'll eat really well is the message.
Hoping your all well.
8:35 out of all my time growing up in Australia (18 years now) I have never heard someone say or use "root" as "f***"
No about 10 years ago they use to climb it but it’s band.
Howard Holt drowned. He was Prime Minister at the time. There is a swimming pool named after him lol
Harold
I'd say that photo of people on Uluru was taken many years ago.
First b tip. Don't listen to Poms.
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. Happy New Year Ryan and family! I really enjoy your channel and be safe 😃
Shrimp and prawn have differences. Number of legs is main difference.
root isn't a profanity, it's just a word you can exchange in reference to doing the act
I’ll be waiting to see the Fraser Island video see your reaction on it I travel there at least once a year and other beach camping spots. Another video you should watch if you like our country stuff is the 4wd cape York trip the best video for that would be from 4wd 24/7 RUclips channel
Ryan we have lost a guy to a shark attack in Streaky Bay; Sth Australia today, details are scant as the Legacy Media News teams race to the locale. Have a fabulous morning, afternoon or evening 🐨🦘🇦🇺
When i was living in byron there was a ten year streak of shark attacks at least one every year between 2010 -2020
1:38 Dumb & Dumber - Jim Carrey when he was chauffeuring
There are a few current videos available killers of Eden. This will absolutely blow your mind.
Fraser Island is now called K’gari and is a large sand island off Hervey Bay. Beautiful place to visit but you need 4 wheel drive vehicles and a lot of common sense. It has a large dingo population and they will attack you if you don’t put food away. It’s mainly used for camping but they do have a couple of eco resorts. It’s not a great place to take young children because of the dingo attacks. Do a video on it.
No more climbing Uluru, been illegal for many years now >20yrs.
The image of crowd climbing is OLD when still common activity pre 1990s
HNY 🎉 I'm from Victoria and I've never seen anyone ever put a prawn on the bbq. Must be a northern state thing.
Do you know who Paul Hogan is? He was Crocodile Dundee. But before that he used to do the Paul Hogan show which was top Australian comedy. Most of it wouldn’t be excepted this days with everyone complaining about everything. Before that he actually used to paint the Sydney Harbor
Bridge. You should look up the Paul Hogan Show. Funny As
They stopped letting ppl climbing Uluṟu a couple of years ago. That would be an old photo.
Apart from what a root vegetable grows from “A root” means sex in Australian slang. So the context you are talking about is every thing.
What does the term root mean?
starting point
Root comes from the Latin word radix, which means "starting point," and you can think of the root of something as the place it starts from, whether that's the root of a tree, or the root of a problem.
I imagine one could probably fly a drone up above Uluru and film the views without offending anyone....
Wow, your comprehension skills are lacking. If I say I'm going out looking to get a root. It literally means I'm looking for a fuck
Yes, root means fuck. "Wanna root?" "I'd like to root her." "Go root ya self." "Go and get rooted." etc.
He says it on Dukes of Hazard not Dumb and Dumber.
Still Jim Cerry though.
We don't actually put prawns on the BBQ we boil them.
Ryan if you want to see the most bizarre of Aussies and dangerous animals watch a video on my home town Eden where locals used killer whales like sheep dogs to capture humpback,Wright whales and blue whales by hand in row boats. This will be the pinnacle of your Australian crazy undertakings by far..
