Nokie was a good friend of mine. I played gigs with him and also sat in with him over several years. He and his wife Judy invited me to his 60th birthday party. I sat in with him and we played Brezzin’ by George Benson that evening. I’ve played with him while he was using his Telecaster and his signature Mosrite called “The Nokie.” The Nokie was one of the last guitar’s that Semi Mosley ever made. Semi always wanted his pickups to have the highest output of any guitar. When you boost the output of a pickup you get a midrange boost. Nokie told me that he would get in arguments with Semi because Nokie didn’t like the sound of the boosted pickups. On his “The Nokie”model he had Semi rewind the pickups a few times until they were to his liking. The Ventures logo on the headstock was replaced with The Nokie logo. The lettering was the same as the original Ventures lettering on the earlier Mosrite’s. Nokie was a huge fan of Chet Atkins. When I played with Nokie he would only use the neck pickup. If you look at RUclips video’s from ‘94 through ‘96 you will see Nokie playing The Nokie using just the bridge pickup. He only used the tremolo once in all the times I played with him. He liked to emulate Chet’s sound when he played locally in Tacoma and Seattle. He used to play a Fender Twin Reverb on all his gigs. One of the nicest most humble guys I ever knew. He knew that he was a big influence on my playing and loved. He considered that his greatest compliment when someone would tell him that. His wife Judy was so nice as well.
