Amazing how you never baulk at tearing things apart, finding and remedying the problem, getting everything reassembled and working again as it should. You are a real inspiration, Joe! Greetings from Australia.
I like these mystery diagnostic vids. Some of my favorites. Keep on Keeping on man. Merry Christmas to u and your family🤟🏻
I love all of your bikes because when you get them they are trash but when you put them out they are golden Superstar heroes just like
It’s always great how you help people out Joe. Happy Holidays to you,the fam and the RUclips Family 👍🏽
Must have stomped the shift lever at high revs without the clutch pulled? Enjoyed the tear down!
That or broke a chain and bound up
Yeah let’s keep starting it 🤷🏻♂️
I admire your work ethic. You put out content consistently and for that I for one can acknowledge credit where credit is due. I am one of those people that has been watching your videos for years and really do wish you would develop further as a mechanic. It’s your channel and your opinion is the only one that matters I get it but people who are mechanics would have a higher opinion of you if some of the sound advice offered to you from your audience was something you could value and appreciate. Most of us long time viewers really are rooting for you and offer advice to help you and are not motivated by trying to be overly critical and just dumping on you. And once again I for one value and appreciate your work ethic.
I've been working on bikes before there were 3 wheelers and quads and always enjoy watching a young person growing their skill set. Like you said it's his option on how far he takes it. 😊
I'd hate to think that veiwers that have little to no mechanical skills might be learning wrong way tow9rk 9n there bike, not realising that Jim's basic fundamentals are backassword.once again..sorry jim.but good intentions can only go so far, then it's just like,,are you doin dumb shit on purpose??
Hes always at it
Good going. Where's the little inspector?
He's helping Santa.
Thanks Joe! Great video and diagnosis. Owner did drop the bike on left side without clutch held in and in a rev, then the chain bound and snap snap snap went the gear teeth. Expensive lesson.
Who else is working in your garage sometimes? I don’t really know much about engines and fixing them but I find your show very interesting. I had a 1972 Cuda that I did a lot of repairs on. Engines are no where near the same anymore. Great job!
Had one of these bike not too long ago, there pretty nice, and very comfortable and reliable. It's nice how easy they are no work on, especially dropping the engine it's super easy. Good job Joe! Love your videos!
I was surprised to see all those jacked gear teeth : (
Brilliant video Joe watching from Edinburgh Scotland UK 🇬🇧 👏
Joe, the chain sprocket looks severely worn very pointy at tips. It looks like the owner tried kick starting it while gears were bound up! It’s the only way that carnage could happen. A chain jump wouldn’t cause transmission gear damage. Lack of oil or bad bearings causing gear teeth misalignment.
Also tell owner to use non-ethanol gas!
The gear failure probably caused the chain failure ... not the chain failure causing the gear failure .
Joe I got a 2002 Honda Foreman TRX450es that has a bad first gear tooth, or teeth broke/chipped off. I will need to address that very soon...Love your work and skills
I respect your humility and acknowledging your failures and how you are learning as you go.
I realize there are too many comments for you to spend your time reading them all, but the ones that are upvoted/liked might be worth a look, so you can learn from the mistakes and knowledge of your viewers, as well.
Merry Christmas!
The path to a master mechanic is paved with broken pieces, keep up the good work!
I think that you are the best superstar mechanic of all time and my wife says that you have a very good body and you could be a supermodel if you tried vintage boy!
7:35 Joe looks like your panning for gold!
That warrior I'm doing for a guy, it's nuts. Couldn't get flywheel off with puller, got to looking at it, it's tack welded to crank. Was rebuilt 2 years ago and started clattering badly. Severe hack job. I knew it was gonna be bad from get go. No grease anywhere, swing arm locked up, etc. Doubt internaly is very well either, had less than 1/4 of a quarter of oil in it. Rod bearings seem ok, but the crank is toast. Bunch of 8 and 10mm headed bolts have been cross thread and used sae bolts 1/4 20s mostly. Yeah 7/16 headed bolts. No gaskets on it, all silicone. Horrible mess. Pulled oil filter housing, it was filled with debris. Wish us luck on this pig, you keep rolling bud, great vids, hope you don't get one like this, wa ts whole bike gone through front to back and motor fixed up, wants it all for under 3k. Got 4 hours already in it. Hardly made a dent. Keep up great vids Joe!! Could use you on this P.O.S. make great vid series for sure.. will let you know how it goes... still gonna get our morning Joe vids before we start wrenching.
Damn man how many times you gonna crank it with that knock!? We heard it the first 15 times and you have the magic of video recording so you can rewind as much as you like
My guess is when he dropped it the shifter hit the ground and tried to force it into the next gear.
Is that 1st drive gear that's got 3 teeth ripped out? That owners story might not be the full story...
thats exactly what i was thinking. like trying to shift without the clutch. cause didnt he say it was dropped on the left side?
@georgetubbs8211 yup, it didn't have anything to do with the chain coming off. It's just from dropping it on the left side.
"I don't want to start it up anymore than I have to". 38 kick and about 10 starts, which sounded like a bucket of bolts in a washing machine. Luckily 2vintage is not repairing my bike.
No maintenance, adult- ridden hard kids bike. Thats how that happens.
I will be curious to see how the shift forks go back into the gear sets ...
I see those gloves a lot. I like them. You must buy them in huge quantities !
You are really good to put all that back together. I would have to buy a new engine and transmission. I wonder how much that would cost.
I had a very similar situation on a 125 Grizzly. It picked up a rock in the chain that lodged at the drive sprocket. Very similar damage you encountered on the TTR. Luckily all the parts were readily available.
Watching you trying to start this bike, knowing it's damaged, makes me shudder.
After what ive dealt with today, nothing surprises me anymore. Never seen flywheel tack welded to crank, or one way bearing only having 10 teeth in it, only compression rings on piston.
If Vinny didn't sleep in, he would have led you directly to the issue. It's always good to get a second opinion. lol
That being said, I was wrong. I was thinking timing chain or oil pump.
Great video. Loved how you let us hear the problem. Then diagnosed it instantly. Great video joe
One of my favorites channels on RUclips 👍🏻🇬🇧
My fav channel!!!! Woooo. Love these vids Joe. Love Vinny!!❤❤
The chain fell off, but was still on the front sprocket, but was lodged somewhere on the frame and the engine was still running and in gear. That is what caused a gear to sheer. The repetitive starting and riding caused further damage
Awesome videos man nice work u never miss on knowing what’s wrong and getting them fixed
Happy holidays
must have been low oil that has caused this.Another great vid Joe
I’ve learned so much from this channel ty!!🤟🤟 cheers from ont. Canada
The chain came off under load and then probably jammed up between the counter-shaft sprocket and the engine case or between the sprocket and swing-arm: the torque was then applied straight through the gears.
I have one of these. Runs nice, reliable and easy to work on. It does leak gas thru the overflow. I've seen others like it also do it.
Sounds like when he dropped the bike with the chain loose maybe under high throttle something caught the chain and sheared gears? That was my initial guess before he even opened the block.
Thats what happens when chain pops at high speed. Seen it before. At least they're not all ground off.
These yamaha 125 engine are hard to kill.
My friend had one, it was abused like rental, but it never gave up.
Idk what your friend did, but it must've been one helluva abuse.
the 4 wheeler problem --> always learning until we die man, don't be frustrated. many times we look for a difficult issue and don't see that's in front of us.
Nice bike, great video. Another teaching/learning moment. Keep up the hard work and be nice to 2Vinney
It's the mystery of the engine fail which keeps me coming back here. And, Oh boy, have we seen a wide variety of them which always makes it very interesting to watch and learn.
TnX man and a very Happy Peppy X-Maz!
On this one, I think when the chain broke, it got caught in the drive sprocket causing an immediate harsh stop snapping teeth and then more teeth were probably broken after trying to ride it .
I'm a mechanic also and that would be my guess on this one.
I enjoy watching your show. You do well at it.
I had a yamaha rt 1 360 enduro that had the chain come off and broke a couple of gears.I put new bearings in and replace the broke gears and it ran great. That was a fun vintage bike but crappy rear suspension.Back in the day that bike cost me $110.00
2V your skills are crazy smart. You earn the title "THE MOTOR WHISPERER" Joe💯👏👏👍. Thanks for the 🎬 .Happy Holiday's 🎅🎄🥂✨️. Salute 2.V 😎✌️
Ttr125’s always leak gas. Early models do not have a spec for the floats and when improperly adjusted, they flood the bowl and run out the overflow. Horrible carbs to tune also.
Fixed my ttr125 and a yz400f I got for $600 thanks to your videos man. Keep it up. Can you do a video of installing a throttle cable and adjusting it right? I’m having problems with that lol unless the bike has been having the wrong part this whole time.
Well, got flywheel off, nightmare, figured out that a lot of the chunk I found in bottom were teeth from one way bearing, only had like maybe 10 left in it, some how it worked. Fun, had to share that..
Wonderfully channel, I'm making my son watch this so he learns how to maintain his mx bike I'm going to buy him.
Why do I have a feeling the owner is the type of guy that runs the oil out of a motor and then blames the engine for failing
The counter balance can be a pain too. Power dropping with no clutch when its freezing cold out gear teeth smash.
They are all cold blooded I put a 17.5 pilot in it and it made a world of difference.
Btw was that the second gear that failed ? Supposedly it's a somewhat common failure. Your video is giving me the confidence to tear into it ours. Its one of the play bikes we ride on the property and It's killing me its jacked up.
Merry Christmas Joe and family, and to everyone who reads this! Around the 22:15 mark it sounds like a baby crying?
Pretty tight fit getting head off, I'd pull motor. Great job on the diag!
43:01 .. 'How the heck does that happen'... Sorry but. It certainly doesn't help to keep kicking it over & over until it locks, especially when you can immediately
hear an obvious mechanical issue.
May want to replace that quads relay to prevent the wiring from being melted by being bypassed. Just a thought though. Best of luck.😊
Strippeed bare. Love it!
love watching you episodes. very knowledgeable on these. where do do find these deals?
I’d say the chain poped and it got reved without him noticing and stripped gears when chain got in a bind it was still in gear reving up
@dakotaowings8028 That's exactly what happened.
@@erickoppa7614 I kinda figured I seen my buddy do that with his atv chain poped while riding it and didn’t notice and reved it up and broke the transmission gears shredded all the teeth on the gear
It was a sad day. I learned not to lean the bike on the chain side if I want to swing the bike around under revs. The chain was a little loose too and I didn't address that earlier like I should have. Expensive lessons.
It happens lol do you own the bike or see the video and have the same thing happen to you if you don’t mind me asking
@dakotaowings8028 that is my bike and I'm grateful to have it brought back to life by Joe.
If when that chain came off it jammed on the case or rear sprcket, even for a brief second it would lock the trans and the crankshafts rotational momentum would shear gear teeth off very quickly. 😕
Edit: forgot the O in sprocket, ooops.
That sounds like a "been there done that" statement. Best idea of what happened though.
@@davidwickboldt712 except it was my clutch basket that had dental work done to the teeth. 😕
I’m addicted to your videos and have been binge watching them. 😬
Did you finish this bike.
valvetrain then trans would be the first things id check for sure on a sound like that. Theyre the weak links of maintenance and things that take the most abuse so makes sense. Dropping bike on the shifter while in 1st will do that
Well done👍🏼
Inertia is my uneducated guess. Engines spinning high, throws the chain and chain fetches hard. All the force from revving 6-7k to an immediate stop cracked the hardened gears.
Dude we heard the issue the first time you started it🤣 then heard you lock the bike up lol
LOL yea.... Keep doing it until it's definitely broken.
It’s not like he isn’t going to fix it. 🤷🏻♂️
The shaft from clutch to inner gear box is shot. Maybe a stripped gear or two. Split the cases
Johnny Joe Blake Megan is a very good mechanic and we loved his performance every single day but he never tells
hey thanks for this great video again. I love your video's and that's what got me into fixing my own bikes :)
For others that have this ttr, and it is a little cold blooded ... up the pilot jet one size, and it will still be a little cold blooded, but not as bad.
We love you Eddie we love you Joe we love you Vinci and we love you know
The reason I ask is , I've watched several of your videos and well.
How on earth do ya keep up with all the gears, washers screws bolts nuts geez i'll never know..Good work man..
When the chain broke it probably got caught it the drive sprocket cause an immediate stop snapping the teeth
Great work enjoyed you stripping down and finding the problem, can't wait for the rebuild.... Andy Uk
Continuing to attempt to run a machine with obvious internal contact is the worst kind of mechanical error.
Right. I literally heard it lock up. Was cringing every time he would start it up like we didn’t hear it the first time.
I came to say the same thing I hope his customers aren’t paying what a dummy.
That was my first thought too. We can hear it once was enough SMH 😢
DITTO
@joshgolab6431 who cares is it yours.
You told us the cause of the sheared teeth right at the beginning of this vid when you said the chain came off, if the bike is in gear ,clutch out , revs on and chain comes off and bunches up against the engine case it will stall the engine instantly applying energy to the weakest point, Gear teeth, this was a common problem with early Yamaha IT's and YZ"s where they would also punch a hole in the case.
make a tool with a large washer cutin half welded to a large old screwdriver to open large slotted oil covers, better than drifting them.
Merry Christmas Joe, Vinnie, Chuck and Everyone.
🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Why check the valve clearances when you’re tearing into the transmission? and you will have to strip the engine completely
Don't forget to order a new primary sprocket. Love the whodunnit videos. LOL Have a great Christmas. :)
I like that you upload every 2-3 days w
This is my take on them trans gears braking. Chain came off dump the bike on the left side where the shift lever is engine revved up transmission shifted without the clutch disengaged and them gear teeth broke. Does this sound about right?
No
It was probably in gear when you started it those stripped gears making the noise and causing it to stall.Did you pull in the clutch when it was running to see if the noise stops.
Herr commandant, ze transmission ist kaput! 👍🏻 BTW that front sprocket a bit hooked & fooked.
I'm starting to think that no one in Wisconsin ever replaces the front sprocket
Luv watching your channel, I’ll learning by watching your videos. I’ve been looking for part 2 of your Grandfather’s bike you were working on. Did you make other videos of the repairs ? Keep it up 👍
Who was screaming, stop trying to start it! Stop!!!!! 😂 not my job!
Still get the thumps up tho! Good effort and showing people how to diagnose these kid of problems
I wonder if it was metal fatigue that caused the gears to fail from repeated strain. When the chain gave way, it triggered the failure. Otherwise, it's a really clean bike, and looks to have been well cared for.
Not seen the end yet but I reckon kik start gear is binding...
Hi, love your videos I wonder when you find time to sleep😁
Need a new front sprocket too, it looks like a little saw blade, if you do best practice is to change the back one and chain too.
I have seen you sometimes replace only de back one without a new front sprocket or chain.
But I understand you keep the cost as low as possible.
Thanks for the joy you bring to us.❤
Pointless checking the valve clearances and cam timing when the head is coming off any way. Vertical split crankcase, so you can't find get into the gearbox without removing the head and cylinder. Overall good job though.
I think over hardening of the gearbox gears . This has caused brittleness of the teeth which resulted in teeth stripping when chain came off.
Literally own the same one, just an LE model with the 16 rear and electric start. 150cc big bore.
For those of you considering buying a Yamaha dirt bike, I would do some serious investigation. Watching previous rebuilds of Suzuki motors and Honda, the Yamaha seems to require much more time and labor. The trouble alone it just splitting the cases from the opposite side requiring the removal of every gear and every washer possible was madness to me. Unless I'm missing something this Yamaha motor seems more complicated to assemble. Thoughts?
At 3:46. I see no oil in the view window. Yikes!!
I think that's the one thing I dislike about bikes as such.. you have to tear the ENTIRE engine apart to get to the transmission.. that's brutal.. splitting the case to find .. well I'm 42:00 in you just pulled the oil pump out, but man.. that's a LOT of work to find something that could be silly in the transmission.. However- I love watching you do it Joe, you're an artist with these things, a magician if I may.. Merry Christmas brother, have a great holiday season with the wife and dogs!!!
edit: oh WOW 1 minute later and holy smokes!! What carnage!!! Awesome catastrophe wowsers!!! I'm surprised, it really does NOT look like there's a ton of hours on that bike.. I realize the chain came off, and catastrophes happened when chains come off, I know for a fact.. but man.. jeez oh man that really sucks.. Even the ring gap, being what it is.. yeah it's there but man I've seen running bikes with way WAY more worn rings. Seriously looks like he took GREAT care of that bike. What a shame, but if anyone's the man to fix that thing, it's you!!
Dang lol I wouldn even try to start that . I’ve done plenty work on bike an quad engines just tear it down an youl find the prob easy instead of just running it makin it worse
The doctor at work it’s truly epic too see
Maybe one day you could build a big bore piston with hiperfornance cam shaft project bike . That xl 500 would make for a good 540 motor
