  • Since I bought a Fisher motorsailer I sold my Dragonfly 800 Mk3 Swing Wing 1990 model. It was in good condition. In this video I go through the entire boat, and also showing a few pictures with a slight humorous sense. This video might be of interest for people interested in the Dragonfly 800 model. Hope you enjoy it.

      Great boats, Randy! They are worth it as they are well build and are high tech all way through.

    Thanks for showing all the details! Is it possible to travel with a DF800 in canals with the sidehulls tugged in?

      @hsobstad  Месяц назад

      Hi. Yes it is, with some care as it is not as strong on the hinges/arms when tugged in. And of course you cant sail it then. As a general rule, only have the sidehulls tugged in when necessary and when moored in protected harbors. :-)

    What a fantastic design for fitting in slips, locks, and trailering, but also having stability when sailing. Is the mechanism built by Dragonfly or is it built by an outside company? It looks pretty rugged.

      It is a well working design, built by Dragonfly. It is quite strong, but it is also a compromise between weight, strength and durability. As these are very fast boats it all comes down to added weight. I would not have crossed the North Sea with this boat as it is not a Class A design.

      @@hsobstad CE category is a nice reference, but many lesser craft have crossed oceans. I just watched a fellow singlehandedly sail a homemade 25 ft trimaran of his own design with an 18 ft overall beam 2,600 miles across the Pacific from California to Oahu Hawaii and being chased by two hurricanes. He launched the trimaran in 1981. It is a great video. 'Sailing to Hawaii Singlehanded on a Small Trimaran Between Two Hurricanes' on YT.
      I am looking to build a significantly lengthened version of a Dragonfly 28 style trimaran, but with longer Farrier style folding arms for more beam when sailing but still narrow enough to be trailered if need be. The Farrier mechanism seems to be the stronger of the two styles as they are used on hundreds of other trimaran designs like the Rapido 40 and 50.

      @@chrisdaniel1339 True! It is absolutely possible and has been done also with this model (around Britain I think it was). But I would not do it with this small wessel, but a larger Dragonfly....maybe.
      Yes, the Farrier folds upwards instead of sideways/backwards. Might be stronger...? Not sure... Dragonfly uses wires to keep the amas protected from the upwards force. Farrier uses metal-tubes I think, which is non-flexing. Be aware of the folding of the Farrier means the sides of the amas are getting submerged (partly) when folded. Might grow barnacles... 🙂

      @@hsobstad Rapido actually solved that issue with the Farrier system, their amas cant as they are drawn in close to the main hull so that the antifouling painted surface is still facing down in the water protecting the rest of the ama from sea life.

      @@chrisdaniel1339 That is a great improvement. It however means they have added some kind of hinges (=increased complexity) to the design.

      @hsobstad  2 года назад

      Hai JP van Heijst. Thanks for your interest in my Dragonfly 800. I am writing the specs of the boat right now. Intending to advertise in end of march/beginning of april. I can translate it to english and put it on a web-page, on my site fjellsiden.com. Please give me a few days to do that, and to report back. Price will reflect current marketprice of such a boat, in this condition and with this equipment. Dont yet know exactly, but maybe 30.000 euro or maybe a bit lower. I will check that. I hope the video shows the boat as in quite good condition and with good sails.

      Hi. I have now made the page. It is not finished, but has content/information about the boat. Bad translations from Norwegian. Still some Norwegian text, that I will translate asap.

    I don't get it. There's no place for making a barbeque and there's not an adequate head with separate shower stall.

      Correct. It is really a "spartan" boat. But it is fast!
