  • "Pop Song 89" was the third single released from R.E.M.'s sixth studio album Green. It peaked at number 86 on the Hot 100, and in the UK "Stand" was re-released instead.
MTV asked band member Michael Stipe, who directed the video, to censor the three topless women with whom he was dancing in the video. Instead, Stipe superimposed black bars on the chests of all four dancers, himself included, and stated, "a nipple is a nipple."
The acoustic version that was used as the single's B-side was also included on the bonus disc of the limited two-disc edition of In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 in 2003.
"Pop Song 89" was covered by Motion City Soundtrack for Punk Goes 80's and by Rockfour for their record For Fans Only!.

REM and Michael Stipe really set the stage for bands like Dave Matthews band and Blessed Union of Souls. It was all started from REM and their classic unplugged version of their songs.

@@jasonfagan3104 I think they mean it sounds like About a girl. I don't know, don't want to make any claims.

Георги Тодоров you mean About a Girl sounds like this. Since this was written well before Nirvana recorded About A Girl. But this sounds like “Hello, I Love You” by The Doors. That’s likely what was meant. But your comment supports the joke/point also. Sometimes there’s a fine line between influence and rip off.

@@ChristopherB72 Yeah, I think they needed to turn him his amp since it looks like the guitars are playing without any amp and I don't know how they could play more quietly.
