Every time I hear a version / cover of GG song performed by piano, strings, choir etc - it never ceases to amaze me how beautiful and complicated their music was (IS)
Excellent! Really can't find the words - so exciting to hear all these amazing interpretations ( from another x -Montrealer, x-Torontonian, now L.A.er). Saw GG at Massey Hall in Toronto.
Hello Mark from a long time Gentle Giant fan from Montreal Canada , I love I Lost My Head Great Interpretation of one of Kerry's beautiful Clavinet part.. Love the sound and the performance ,Thanx for sharing
That's excellent, and a brilliant demonstration of how sophisticated the music of GG really is and why it has lasted. Love those 'false endings'' before part 2 - I always miscount them but can never stay seated once it gets going - genius.
Fantastic !! Gentle Giant was Always Great Live, one of my Favorite Prog Bands : D I was lucky enough to grow up in the height of this magical era !! I saw GG in 1975', 76' & 77'
Just this as a keyboard solo could stand up to any modern classical solo piece. I have some credentials to be able to claim this; I did a licentiate in classical guitar decades ago. Following Kerry's logic is mindboggling and parts reminds me a lot of brazilian classical harmonies combined with the almost medieval structure. Some of the Key changes and modulations are so radical yet sound completely musical. As a prog guitar player this cover gives me hope for the future.and actually made my year till date. What a find. I now solidly believe that in order to understand any Gentle Giant song, you need to see it from Kerry's solo point of view and not the total band rendition. Quite an eye opener. I could listen to Mark's renditions (on other videos too) and suddenly the guitar and vocal parts I love so well made sense above all this diabolic syncopated magic ! I will learn these parts as well as I can on keyboard to improve my guitar renditions. I cannot thank you enough for these videos. It made my 2021 worthwhile. So much to do now..
For those interested, the complete score can be found, along with many other GG pieces, on this site : www.blazemonger.com/GG/Category:Sheet_music Don't know wether these are authentic versions though, but really usefull all the same.
I can verify the blazemonger site transcriptions (which I did) are not 'authentic' in that no one in the band has reviewed and approved them. But I think they are very accurate and I hope they are useful to anyone looking to play this wonderful music! By the way, I love this rendition by Mark. Great job! (Phil Smith, transcriber)
Wow! Brilliant! 👏 I just discovered your channel and you are incredible, this cover was on point. I'm a big fan of The Band, and I was wondering if you ever listened to "Chest Fever". It has an insane intro by Garth Hudson, a musical genius, and I'm curious to know if you ever tried to perform it. I would love to see your covering that one. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words! (Btw, I love 'Chest Fever,' but man, that organ intro going into the song proper is like flyin' down the interstate in your Mustang convertible & shades and then skidding in front of, and struttin' into, Chuck E. Cheese. 😁)
@@ADVENT_MarkPtak You're so right! 🤣 I respect everyone in this world, but if you enjoy both Gentle Giant and The Band, you have my utmost respect! 👏 Garth was limited playing in The Band, but he knew exactly what to add to spice up a song! If you haven't heard it yet, you should check out their song "Jupiter Hollow". Anyway, thanks for your reply and awesome videos!!
That is fantastic, thank you - how long must that have taken to learn? Their chords and transitions are so tricky, filled with companion and ghost notes that make their sound so GG. Kerry Minnear was and is a genius, gorgeous tenor as well.
this sounds a bit "bare" without the guitar and violin parts -- which is no shade on you, Mark, but just illustrative of Kerry's brilliance as a composer, as I'm pretty sure he wrote the Clavinet and guitar parts (curious whether he also wrote the plucked violin part, or that was Ray's contribution).
Excellent, excellent! I've been playing the clav part from "Experience" for many years. This and that are my two favorite Minnear clav parts for sure, great job! Did you paint your's white?
There is an M-4000D (digital Mellotron) just out of range of the pic on top of the blue Rhodes on the right, but what I'm playing is a Hohner Clavinet C that's been modified.
By the way… the Clavinet is actually an electric clavichord, right? With actual strings you have to tune? It is funny to think that this ancestor of all stringed keyboards, dating back to the medieval era, had such a revival in the seventies, with the likes of Stevie Wonder…
@@sapiensfromterra5103 Absolutely right! But hardly a concert instrument, more of a musician's practice, due to the really low output. Cannot play along any other instrument. Also its "twangy" sound is not for anyone's taste, but the expressive possibilities are great. And it's the only keyboard instrument to accomodate vibrato… Note : there seems to be a rather strong clavichord revival in France since a few years - amongst harpsichordists, of course, not mainstream pop ! The fantastic Jean-Luc Ho gives great clavichord concerts.
@@francoisbruel9163 Should have clarified, that I meant widespread in the sense that almost every keyboardist and/or composer had one at home. Other than that, I fully agree! Edit: I would also kill for a video with somebody playing some Scarlatti or Bach on a Clavinet, instead of all the Funk and Wah out there, 'cause I consider getting one myself.

Terrific! Kerry was/is such an unsung musical genius.
This one of those rare spaces on the Internet for true genius to show itself.
Yes, Kerry Minnear is the true genius!
Excellent rendition and fitting homage to Minnear and the rest of the Giants. We need to preserve their music at whatever cost.

Love the sound and the performance ,Thanx for sharing
Thank you, Steven! Glad you enjoyed it...👍
Great performance. You've captured the brilliance that is Gentle Giant!
Nice job Mark. Saw GG perform this song LIVE in 1975 in Ottawa Canada. Damn they were great LIVE in concert.
That's excellent, and a brilliant demonstration of how sophisticated the music of GG really is and why it has lasted.
Love those 'false endings'' before part 2 - I always miscount them but can never stay seated once it gets going - genius.
Sounds exactly like Kerry Minear's clavi in the studio recording. Played outstandingly as well.
Awesome man!!!!!!!!!!!!
That last chord is so great. As the beginning of part 2, that's when it really goes from gentle to giant!
Absolute Bang on giant
Brilliant!
beautiful
Thank you!!! I know the guitar part well, but struggle hearing all the piano, this helps a ton! Thank you again
My pleasure. I make no claims that it's exactly 100% correct, but am glad that you found it helpful. 👍😎
wow.... awesome playing!
BRAVO !!!!!!
Very well played! Great sense of tempo! I saw them open for Tull in fall of '72.
Oooh so perfect
great stuff, mark!
WOW! Thats how you do it! Pretty much like the original!
A great transcription and beautifully played! Can't wait for you to perform part 2.
Thanks Max! If you liked that, check out the Free Hand transcription video (also on my channel). Cheers!

Nicely done, Mark! Bravo! This is the last song I saw GG play live and the first GG song I played at a GORGG. Holds a special place in my heart.

beautifully played dear sir! please transcribe other Kerry wonders for us GG fans to enjoy
Awesome
Kerry is one of the greats. On par with Tony banks, Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman.

Thank you, Jamie. No, the Model C clav comes white already.
@@ADVENT_MarkPtak Thanks. I know Kerry's was a Model D painted white, so that's why I asked. Again, thanks for this, just great!
Nice! Where's the (electric) piano part for part two?
Hopefully someday... 🙂
Wonderful, well played. What type of keyboard are you using to recreate that unique sound that Kerry used?
Thanks very much...It's a Hohner Clavinet (Model C).

How do you add the damper Slider on the right Side? My Clavinet C do not have one
Vintage Vibe did it.

It is funny to think that this ancestor of all stringed keyboards, dating back to the medieval era, had such a revival in the seventies, with the likes of Stevie Wonder…
Though it really only fell out of fashion in the romantic period, before that it was still as widespread as the harpsichord and later the piano forte
