Thanks for all these classic Isles games from the glory years. Nice seeing "new" games.

    Thanks for posting this game.
The hooking and holding infractions back then were part of the game. Players accepted it and showed tremendous grit and determination to contend with it. They didn’t whine about it.
However, having played and watched hockey for five and a half decades I believe the game is better without the hooking and holding.

Do you have the whole series? Im a Gretzky fan, but, whenever someone asks me "how" did they lose to the NYI in this & the 1983 series, I reply, "Even Bobby Fischer learned at the feet of masters before becoming one himself". The Islanders taught Edmonton a shit load with this six game battle, & omg Billy Smith stopped everything it seemed. Part of the Islanders historic record (which may stand for all time) 19 straight playoff series victory.

LOL...how did Edmonton lose to the Islanders in 1981& 1983? Simple. The Islanders were MUCH better then the Oilers...LOL...and they didn’t lose. They got crushed!

Yes, Bobby Fischer went through some growing pains just like any other prodigy. The promise of Stockholm (where he went undefeated at the 1962 Interzonal) was snatched away later that year at the Candidates tournament in Venezuela. It would take him a full decade before he reached the pinnacle, although he was easily the best player in the world by 1970.
As for the Islanders taking playoff series from the Oilers in the early 1980s; the Islanders were already a Cup contender before Mike Bossy had even played a game for them. They had been together longer and had the better defence, goaltending, and coaching compared to the young, hotshot Oilers. During the 1983 final, Don Cherry noted that the Islanders neutralized Gretzky's wingers.

The Oilers were an up and coming team in '81. Only Gretzky on that team had established himself as a 'star' . The rest of their stars of the 80's were not at that level yet. The Oilers had swept Montreal 3-0 in the previous round a stunning upset for the seemingly ease they did so. The Islanders were 1st overall in this season and the defending Cup champions. Anyone who asks how could the Oilers lose this series and the final in '83 doesn't have any context or recognition of how great the Islanders were at that time. In a 6 year period from the start of the 1978-79 season to the conclusion of the 1983-84 season the Islanders were either 1st overall ( 3 times ) Stanley Cup champions ( 4 times ) or in the finals ( 5 times ). The Oilers were still a few years away from reaching a similar level.
In a 10 season period from '75 to '84 the Islanders were in the final 4 a whopping 9 times. That team was an exceptional dynasty in their day - a record 19 consecutive playoff series wins. More players from that team should be in the Hall of Fame.

Bourne, 6'3" vs 6'0 Coffey, longer faster stride.

Wish they could get rid of the ticker tape thing on the bottom of the screen! It ruins the original game information.

You would think listening to these announcers the defending Stanley Cup champions had no business being in this series.
