  • In this episode of Kult America, in Partnership with PGNiG, American journalist Ryan Socash explores the history of the oil industry in Poland and exposes many unknown facts in present day as to the legacy of Polish power production and consumption. With unprecedented access to the historic oil field's in Bóbrka, to exploratory drilling sites and the functioning well's and natural gas collection centers of Southern Poland, Socash came to realise that a seemingly simple yet life-sustaining commodity have been built by masses of Polish experts devoted to their craft.

It isn't easy to be granted access to such restricted areas. Must have been a bit of a challenge. I appreciate the effort and the story.

We didn't discovered nafta / oil.
Nafta / oil was known in Middle East since chalcolitic age, and was widely in use since bronze age.
Mr. Łukasiewicz discovered a way to refine a rocks' oil into a benzine / gas and other types of fuel, while he was working on new ways of producing wódka.

The story is wrong. Lukasiewicz is not 1 & only father of oil industry. My grand, grand, grand.. father is. Tytus Trzecieski, agricaltular engineer & mining engineer( university of Berlin), owner of thousand's of acres of farm land. One day his sheep hoarder came to him & said that on the land where sheep graze there is black, smelly liquid coming from the ground & he did put some on sores sheep had & sheep got healed. Trzecieski took a sample of it & went to University of Lwow to have it analyzed. At University they had no idea what the stuff is but he was told that there is pharmacist which experiments with distillation process, Lukasiewicz. Land on which stuff was discovered belonged to Karol Klobassa so gentlemen's agreement was formed, first oil company( 1856), but Trzecieski financed whole thing. Lukasiewicz was dirt poor. Lukasiewicz did not invent first naphtha lamp. Local sheet metal guy did. Trzecieski build his own lab & experimented with distillation of crude oil & exchanged his results with Lukasiewicz. On world exhibition in Paris in 1867 they presented array of products made from crude oil. Later Trzecieski lost interest in oil, sold his part to Klobassa. Why official story is different than mine?Trzecieski was from aristocratic, catholic family, his predecessor received nobility from polish king Boleslaw Chrobry(967-1205) for saving kings life during the battle by killing the attackers with his horse stirrup. So the stirrup became his family crest.During communist times in Poland anything close to aristocracy or Catholics was not politically correct, history was rewritten & poor Lukasiewicz was made the 1 & only father of oil industry. He was in part however like also the sheep guy who first found the stuff but it would be to complicated for American film makers which want to go right to the point in the single sentence. Double whopper with a cheese & everything on it, no onions, please.
