  • @evaneparat
    @evaneparat 6 лет назад +11

    The answer to the question posed in your title is rather obvious. Most hockey players come from northern countries (Canada, Sweden, Russia, etc.) and northern states (Minnesota, Michigan, New York, etc.), whereas states with the most MLB, NFL, and NBA players tend to be more southernly. A vast majority of African Americans live either in the lower bible belt or up the southern half of the eastern seaboard, states where baseball, football, and basketball are rather large parts of the culture, whereas hockey is not. In your video you even acknowledge that while the MLB, NFL, and NBA had segregated leagues for African Americans, hockey didn't really have any such leagues, or at least to such a degree. You cannot blame the shortage of African Americans in the NHL on racism when there are hardly any of them playing the sport to begin with. I used to play hockey in Chicago, one of the more racially-diverse areas in the north, and I never had an African American teammate. Merely seeing one on an opposing team was rarer than a blue moon.

  • @janetsampson1779
    @janetsampson1779 6 лет назад +8

    The reason there are so few African American NHL players is because there are so few African Americans interested in the game or taking up the sport,take a look at an NHL game and look at the crowd,there's no African Americans in the crowd,until more African Americans take up the game there will be very few African American NHL players. However I do not believe that we should complain about a lack of diversity as this could lead to forced diversity in hockey leagues like the NHL. We should only want the best, and if that means everyone is African because they’re the best, then so be it. My point is that while we want to spread the game to minorities we shouldn’t focus on race when it comes to the players who play hockey like in the NHL.

    I think it's better when people stop looking at the color and instead look at the playing ability. Typically, not a lot of african-americans play hockey in the first place, for whatever reason, and that realistically is all that needs to be talked about.

      I think place kicker would be a much better spot to play. You get more thrills kicking game winners, and a lot less damage than a running back or wide receiver. I googled black nfl place kickers because I honestly couldn’t think of one, and I know lots of dumb football trivia like the most points scored in one game by a single player Ernie Nevers with 40, and it turns out there has been more Swedish place kickers than Black place kickers. There has been 4 in NFL history according to google. And I don’t think they counted that time Chad Johnson kicked it.

      LordBitememan honestly idk, it's probably because black people are more publicly oppressed in American and the media loves to cover black social problems and Asians always seem to get left behind. It's also doesn't help that there are very few people of Asian decent in the NHL. Also the fact the black players like P.K , Simmons and Jones are top players in the league it is shinning more light on them. It's also black history month so that helps too.

      NBA is the least diverse league, with mostly just black people from America and the occasional white American. NFL is more white Americans, but the same 2 groups. NHL is more diverse than those two with Americans, Canadians, Finnish, Swedish, Russian players. MLB has white Americans, black Americans, Dominican Republic, Japanese, Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Korean. So the NBA should be trying to be more inclusive.

    • @MrWhateverfits
      @MrWhateverfits 6 лет назад +5

      MadShepherd The NBA has people from China, Spain, and a couple other European countries. The NFL has only Americans. Also if we want to talk about the diversity of a sport as a whole American Football is the least diverse with Leagues in only America and Canada. Basketball has various leagues in Europe, the same with Baseball in Asia.

    TBH I dont think getting more black people into hockey the "most important" thing for diversity in american sports. I think if you count all the leagues in the US, black people are are way more active in professional sports than other ethnicites. Having said that, I think you shouldnt care about peoples ethnicity, put the best players on the pitch and maybe promote sports in certain communities that have a low % of active athletes. Black people in the NFl is not the problem, I dont know the numbers but I would guess the % of arabs, whites and eastern asians (not counting people from the islands) are way lower than their % of population. I might be wrong on all of his, havent done any number crunching at all :D

It's cultural more than anything. Yes, it is expensive, but there are ways to mitigate that. You said there are 21 rinks in Florida, there's more than that in Esmonton.

Basketball, football, baseball, soccer and even golf all make more money than hockey players. I think this is a huge factor in what sport they are drawn to.

    Why is diversity even a question for the NHL, or for that matter, in all other walks of life?
    Surely what matters is results, irrespective of creed, race, nationality,... and gender.
    Surely the NHL should open up its doors to women because they are 50 per cent of the population.... someone tell me why women do not play in the NHL please from the diversity perspective...?

    • @lilturbo2657
      @lilturbo2657 6 лет назад +2

      The NHL was made at a time when women were barley consider people, also the men get payed millions more and are trained by the best in the world, while the players in the women's hockey league would be better off work at McDonalds full time, the biggest women's contract is only $25,000 per year so unless your on a national team your need a job in the offseason.

      This Canuck wants to see everyone play hockey. Everyone. I guess it isn't an issue of diversity for me, but one of integration.
      I'm not super warm to gender segregation. But what reason is there for black people to not play hockey? Accessibility is a legit temporary reason alright but there's no reason it should remain. And in Canada at least, outside of competitive levels, black people do play hockey like everyone else because, you know, Canada. So more black people in the NHL is very likely to happen in the near future.

    • @SevenWilly

      good troll man! women don't play because men would dominate and overpower them in a coed hockey league. However black men are on the same strength level of all other men so its alright for them and not women. The nhl should try to appeal to more groups of people to grow the game.

    • @ZhangtheGreat
      @ZhangtheGreat 6 лет назад +2

      Diversity matters because racism still exists. Without the aim to become more diverse, leagues can easily unintentionally let racial practices slip in. I used to believe we're beyond that in sports now, but as we see from countless examples (fans booing players for their race, owners being openly racist, etc.), that's not the case at all. Players can be as gifted and talented as they are, but if the owner is racist or the fan base has racial feelings that are allowed to foster and dictate the direction of the team, talent suddenly takes a back seat.

    Here's another question: What about Latinos and Hockey? The only players that I can come up w/ that are in both the NHL and the NWHL are Alec Martinez [LA Kings] and Meghan Huertas [Connecticut Whale] who [at least] have a last name that is Latino/Hispanic. Probably less than the 1% of all active players in the NHL [and the NWHL if you want to include that].
    EDIT: I wrote this comment prior to playing the video, and after watching the video, it makes total sense that this can also apply to the Hispanic/Latino demographic. I do know this: if Charles Barkley is a fan of hockey, that I can have some sort of hope that more blacks/African Americans and more Latinos/Hispanics would give hockey a chance because hockey is definitely a unique sport: a sport where we could suffer a heart attack after a bad call that a ref would make.
