My uncle (my mom's brother) served in WWII in France and was in an Army barracks with a lot of Southern boys, and had never heard country music before. Well those Southerners had before long turned all those other fellas into country fans, and they would listen to the Opry together on Armed Forces Radio. After my uncle got out of the Army he turned my mom on to country as well. Hank hit the scene after WWII, but my uncle quickly became a big fan (not so easy to do because he lived in New England). My mom was a lover of all kinds of music, including rock 'n' roll and R&B, but always had a special place in her heart for country, and she loved Hank Williams' music. She turned me on to country, and when I learned to play guitar I learned on Hank Williams records and those old song folios. To this day I can still remember how to play all those old songs. How many performers can claim to have as many intergenerational fans as Hank? Not even Sinatra or The Beatles can make that claim.

I recall as a boy, my grandma doing housework, singing Hank's songs. Back in the day, the radio was what most people had, and country was very popular as " cowboy", or, " hillbilly" as it was known back then. So, i was always familiar with Hank's music from childhood. Loved it then, still lovin'it now. I can understand the alcohol for back pain as well, having a lifelong back injury myself. Unless you've lived with a terrible perpetual back injury, you'll never know the agony of daily life, compounded by women and the resultant problems too.. @@pimslickins8321 You have to be able to have respect, understanding and appreciation for this music, or just music in general. This is the roots of country. This is Americana. You’re right about one thing, just in the wrong way. It was a different time. There was no rock and roll yet. He wrote from the heart and had a look, sound and style that inspires people to this day. Some music is not for everybody. This is country music, in its rarest, purest, most authentic form. His music was relatable to people. You either get it or not I guess. But, if you’re ever in the south talking badly about artists like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash won’t go over well with many people.

The God Lord had an awful lot to do when he created Hank Williams. Williams was overflowing with talent and a voice one in a million. Hanks had an amazing talent that had a single focus. He was able to polish the lens of a human soul with his voice and writings.

Many wonderful artists live for decades. The 50's N early 60's where a big music revolution time in country to rock etc. His death like Marilyn Monroe in 62 not calling her a musician but a movie star to elvis, Janis Joplin etc left us all young. The media kept them in our eyes, ears n minds. More records n reruns of any early movies or tv these icons where in people remember them young at the top of their success. Yes all talented at what they did but if they lived to 85 would they of stayed to be such icons? Doubtful. Hank was enjoyed for music you could easily sing to n guitar players could play his basic classic styled music. That's why he was so loved. You want a hit record? Something others can relate too, are able to sing along to n play at home on piano or guitar. Possibly add a few friends on other instruments. Typical of most Beatles songs.

Anyone's gifted after selling their souls for fame & money. Bioncé has often said "she" can't sing or perform like she wants to unless "she's" on stage, & "Sasha Fierce" enters "her", & takes over. In slow motion, you can see the demon take over, as the body contorts. This is just one of many examples.

What would it have been like had Hank Williams lived longer? Well, he would've remained a country hitmaker, and continued to draw crowds while on the road. Hard to believe it's been more than 60 years since we mourned "The Legend", as he's been called in music circles.

It was simple, down to earth, completely relatable, and I could feel it. I have other albums of his music, all on old fashioned vinyl. None of this digital remastering that ruins so many good old songs.

I'm an old man now but when I was a kid my Daddy used to sing Cryin songs by Hank. Syd had all his eps on the yellow MGM label. Think his guitar was a Harmony Soveriegn. I have a 51 year old son somewhere who I only saw once when he was first born, he was adopted. Hence 'My son calls another man Daddy' by Hank always makes ms cry. Syd was dirt poor from Stepney, London, but he made good before he died aged 67. I went on to play guitar and the 5 string, they're in the other room here in Portugal.
