As someone who has been living with this bike for 7 years now, my honest assessment is as follows: it has awesome presence. Relative to the sheer size and style of the bike, the power & performance are Adrenalin pumping. You constantly have to remind yourself of its dimensions, because it accelerates and handles so well, you can easily forget how much road you need to stop it, how far you can bank it over before scraping the pegs, and the extra persuasion it needs to lean into the bends with that massive rear tyre that loves a straight line. If you’re coming off a sport bike it can catch you out, but once you’re tuned in to its characteristics and learn to ride it accordingly, it’s a fabulous machine. Such a comfortable seat, and the clamshell riding position (feet forward, but upper body “engaged” slightly forward rather than completely laidback) sums up its crossover cruiser-sport heritage. I love it, and it’s a keeper.
To understand what this bike is all about, you have to remember why most people choose to ride motorcycles in the first place. It’s for the sensation that it gives you, and let’s be honest, for the beauty of the machine. This bike delivers a sensation all of its own. the feel and sound of a cruiser with all that additional power on tap when you want it, and a unique streamlined styling that bridges the gap between cruiser and sports better than anything else except maybe the much smaller Kawasaki Vulcan S. I’ve had mine for about 7 years now, I also own a more conventional sports tourer. The second bike is my workhorse, it carries more luggage, is a better all-weather ride, easier to lug around the driveway/car park, keep up with similar bikes on the twisties, filter through traffic. The M109R is for when there’s nothing to do except enjoy the ride, and if I could only keep one, it would be that one (I have a car for the other stuff if I need it.)
I have a pearl white M109 and I get compliments everywhere. Sexiest cruiser ever made! This review was spot on about the cornering at higher speeds. Be careful . But you WILL enjoy this bike.
There's lots you can do to play with the way the power is applied through the revs, a remap costs less than £200, it's a lot of fun to customise, it's just fun and reliable, very very reliable.
P.S.These bikes are heavy enough that when an approaching semi at speed goes by you, you're not blown into the next county. This bike stays planted on the road.
I have watched quite a few “reviews” of this bike and so far your review is the (your opinions of the bike notwithstanding) best. Well considered, no punches pulled but fair, done through the lense of some real moto experience so you can make objective criticism of the handling or the tech etc. Thanks.
It took me 3 years to decide which cruiser to get and am pleased to say I made the right choice with THE M109R. Heaps of mods you can make but exhaust and K@N filters and powercommander v did the job on mine. Maybe a shock down the track. My Wife and I do 6-7 hour day trips and my arse is still fine at the end, very comfortable bike I absolutely love it.
Mine is totally standard. Absolutely no need to mess around with it. And as a 2007 model, it’s the-colour it should be... black and chrome. There was only one other bike in this genre which interested me, the Rocket 3, but at 5’8” I didn’t fancy balancing 350kg on my toes, and I can flatfoot this one. My one and only crtitcism is the lack of ABS, but I only ride in the dry if I can help it.
The engine does not die, you need an aftermarket exhaust and a powercommander, then you will experience the true Intruder :-) able to reach 150 mph....
I love my M109 and the only gripe I have is the rear shock. It's terrible, with hardly any rebound dampening. A lot of guys buy after market shocks for it. The front is ok but the rear lets the bike down. You just adapt to the pogo feeling you get when cornering and hitting a dip. The bike holds a line quite well and the brakes pull it up very well indeed. A relaxing bike to ride compared to a sports bike. I had a Speed Triple before the Bully and the change took a little getting used to, especially in the corners. Your boot heel touches down first, then the pegs followed by the mounting points for the foot pegs and frame. Hitting the frame can catch you out as it will kick out the rear because it's acting like a pivot point, taking weight of the rear tyre. It's a satisfying bike to ride with plenty of grunt to put a smile on your face while being computer tech free. No ABS, traction control, etc, etc..... Simple and a big bag of fun!
This is called M109R in Hawaii (109 cubic inches). It is a vastly under rated motorcycle. Especially for the money. It will easily equal or beat any of the Harley V-Rods, and will EAT any Harley 1200cc Sportster. The pedigree of the engine is unique. It was originally a V4 super bike engine, that was cut down to a Vtwin and changed to shaft drive. It loses so little on the shaft drive that you can see why they did it. Plus no chain stretch and low maintenance. The torque is modulated by special exhaust waste-gates, don't screw with the exhaust pipes eh? By modifying it in very small, inexpensive increments you can easily pull "another" 20 horsepower out it. Now that the VRod is out of production, the Indian Scout and the Ducati are the closest to it.
The Vrod is 76-cubic inches and will run with this bike if not beat it. The Vrod just doesn't have the low down torque, it has to be revved to get the power.
Holy crap those licence plates in South Africa are ridiculous. What's the need for so many letters / numbers? You don't have 100s of millions of motorcycles there.
You know, I'm a Harley Davidson guy through and through. If I ever has to choose a different bike it'd be an Indian. However I font understand the hang up about metric cruisers. These bikes were literally made to appeal to us Americans. Japan has made multiple bikes just for us. I don't know about all of you but that's pretty flattering.
No offense but the traditional ‘Murica red blooded, flag waving crowd has more than it’s fair share of racists and this bike is Japanese. THAT is why most who love Harleys and Indians would never consider this bike no matter how good it is.
@@TheSwellrider Exactly. A lot of Harley riders would never be caught dead on a "Jap" bike. They'd rather spend 50% more money for an inferior product.
Road presence: Ive NEVER had cars move over and make space when I'm splitting or filtering in the same way as on my M109R, nor had as many random people (including a 60 year old lady at the supermarket last week) comment "Nice bike!" Where it shines - crunching kilometres on an open road, but it does require commitment to go quick in the twisties. It just not want to stay down in a corner, requiring constant adjustment, but OMG when you point at the exit and roll on the throttle!!!!!!. Its a slow in, fast out kind of ride through the corners.
Suzuki ran with the Intruder name for 20 yrs (85 to 05), then changed to Boulevard, which I like better. Now, what is old is new again...back to Intruder :( Don't understand that move. They should have separated this beautiful bike from the rest and just named it the Suzuki M1800. I have a 2007 Boulevard S83 (1400) and it is still a very good looking bike while maintaining a very low weight "for a cruiser" at 535 lbs "243 kg".
I have the exact same Grey M109r, mine is a Boulevarde not an intruder, I am in Australia...... different names for different countries, I changed the chrome indicators to black sleek LEDS
Another review in which we couldn't hear the sound of the bike. However, it is a great review to listen to some music while watching a bike which you have no interest in and some men talking about it.
Moore Mafia have just dropped a vid where they flash the ECU, get big hp gains particularly in higher gears and also mid range?? Top gears are only getting something like 40% power and they picked up huge amounts where for some reason there was a huge drop off in the mid range
The Nerfed Gamer Look at the rest of Suzuki's cruiser line. The S40 should be the one chain driven bike. Everything 800cc (not big for a cruiser) and up is shaft.
In the UK we only have this monster or the Kawasaki Vulcan (chain driven parallel twin). That's it! Have a look at bikes.suzuki.co.uk/bikes/ and see what the 'official importer' brings in.
Kawasaki 1500 and 1600 Vulcan Nomads were incredibly good motorcycles. I put over 130,000 MILES on my 2006 Nomad. Shaft drive. Traded it in for a new 2014 Indian Chief Vintage. Another amazing bike.

first review that states this bike stops like a sports bike. .BTW no it doesn't its still seems spongy and tad weak, also it's still called a Boulevard in the USA.
Here again, they've taken a great looking master piece and thoroughly trashed it with gray paint and blacked out the rest. I considered the Rocket 3 but chose the M109R because of the lower seat height (I’m 5’8”:and for me, a near 800lbs bike needs flat feet on the tarmac when it’s not moving) and because I heard about some reliability issues with the Rocket (or at least, the earlier ones.)

Better alternatives for a name… “Vanguard”, “Titan”, “Conqueror”, “Battlestar”, “Rogue”, or for the historically minded, “Destrier” (the great Warhorse of the Middle Ages.) Boulevard is too tame and lazy, Intruder sounds furtive (and this bike is anything but that.) Or just “Warhorse.”
Most 'muscle' bikes have around that or less. Think CB1300, ZRX1200, XJR1300. Classic examples of the muscle bike category, and all around the 100 - 120 hp mark.
