Just picked up my Tenere two weeks ago here in San Diego, CA. Ordered the filter and pre-filter, arrived in less than a week. Thanks for the detailed explanation on the snorkel mod.
And for me to move from the Africa Twin: 2 filters, the need to loosen the crashbars, remove both sides of the fairing. Plus the airbox is under the tank!
@@Itchybite Yamaha recommend a different oil to Unifilter. Obviously, when editing this video I recognised the difference, but I felt it was important to put the two views. I don't think they are necessarily exclusive of one another.

Wow! Well done Yamaha! 24,000 mile valve inspections, easy access air filter...this is gonna crush Tiger 800/900 sales. Pulling the cams out of my Tiger 2x year got old fast. I can't wait for these to get to the US.
Some belray foam filter oil mixed with grease be good around lid extra protection. I would oil the prefilter to with belray not leave dry. Has airbox got a o ring on seal or foam.
Appreciate the practical applications and improvements on the T7. Question: the XTZ750 Super Tenere would be the predecessor to the T7. Any thoughts on the differences in performance b/t the models?
Most people will remove the whole snorkel. its fact the factory tunes are terrible to meet emissions. open the air box and exhaust and let it breath. obviously a tune afterwards is ideal. wont be long for the aftermarket to supply power mods. also 10 years of dirt riding using uni, hiflow, funnel web, twin air and ktm power parts foam filter. never had an issue with castrol foam air filter oil from a can. only my 2 cents. The t700 is everything i need from a bike. keen to get one at the end of 2020. got my old xt660x for now.
That Filter is rather small for a 689 CC bike .. Looks like the T-7 is using the same air box as my FZ-07 I replaced the paper filter with a K&N filter the K&N does beller more.. I always carried spare clean foam air filters on trips with my dirt bike.. I used to clean them in gasoline which is dangerous.. I can use mineral spirits too .. Good to know not to use aerosol spray oil which is expensive . I have a 55 gallon drum of 80W-90 transmission mineral oil and a 55 gallon drum of 85W-140 wt oil too .. I guess the heavier oil would be better.. If you are running near lots of water or snow Outerwear's socks are great .. but they fit over normal filters that bring the air from outside to the inside would not be easy to use on the backwards Yamaha set up .. So if you have to take the gas tank off to service a KTM would be a deal breaker. I thought I read they made servicing the air filter much easier on the new Triumph Tiger 900 maybe I heard that.. Maybe the KTM you still have to remove the gas tank ..I hope some one who knows will comment.. I sure hope they make foam air filters available in the USA as the freight from Australia would cost more than the filter costs..

Some say that a chiptuning is mandatory; some say nothing, like you guys; some say it is not necessary, the lambda makes its work and tune the mixure again... What do you think? Thanks in advance!!!

We have a truck load of very fine ancient dust that easily permeates paper filters. Most bikes are sold with foam oil filters in Australia for that reason. @@Ccaarlooss
I already cut my inner snorkel flush. Then I watched this. What can be the difference? I can't seem to understand what has changed from a stock length inner snorkel and a flush cut snorkel
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Well, I looked it up, watched a couple of videos and I don't seem to comprehend how air resonance is related to performance loss in the engine. If you are trying to say aerodynamics and air-flow dynamics, then I can understand that maybe cutting the snorkel may change the path that the intake air follows. But this also wouldn't make sense as the engine will try and suck in the necessary air and the point and size of entry is still the same with a bonus of a larger filter area will be available for that air to follow. I will be happy if there is an example or a data of comparison what exactly happens if you cut the snorkel too short or if you don't cut it at all. No body cares about noise emissions, therefore I am not talking about noise reduction effects of the air box design.
Might be ktm damaged.. But it seems no one have had the thought of removing the airbox completly and adding a foam filter Rottweiler style. Would probably both loose weight and gain power. Overall reading forums i miss the KTM community and the will to improve. I really like the T7 over the 790. I Currently have an adventurized 690, Would be awesome with an comparison to the T7 from someone who have also had a 690 for a longer period. I really like the videos.

@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Yea i know :) Would be nice if you could do a comparison like you did with the gs310 vs 690. Me for example is thinking of going from 690 to T7 due to wanting a more road worthy bike but still be able to do dirt and I can only have one bike.
Are you sure about cutting too much off of the snorkel causing harmonics in the air box? The reason I ask is that in 2021 Yamaha completely eliminated the snorkel leaving only the elbow on the inlet.
Excellent video. I think an "inside out" filter system by Yamaha is problematic as the air box has to be perfectly sealed otherwise dirt goes directly to the intake. You can get away with tiny gaps in an "outside in" system as the filter will just get dirty earlier. Also in lots of cases a prefilter will go directly over the filter. It will be interesting to see how the aftermarket guys address this system.

Question: I have the original air filter and an Akrapovic with no db killer. Is it recommended to do the modification to the snorkel? Should I cut the 12 or 15 mm?

I think you should go back and have a closer listen. In summary, Yamaha Australia CONTRACTED Unifilter to supply foam airfilters for Australia because of our fine dust. Every Tenere sold in Australia is fitted with a Unifilter at time of sale. It is common practice for motorcycle companies in Australia to turn to Unifilter to replace paper airfilters because paper filters don't stop our very fine dust. I can think of a number of well known brands of bikes where engines have been dusted and no longer work after having been in our conditions for less than a week. The engines simply stop, because they have no compression. Europe doesn't have this problem, nor most parts of the US, but the deserts of the mid west do, as do parts of South Africa and other locations in the world. I strongly suggest you read up on this. Secondly, Myles wasn't saying the plastic melted. His point was sometimes the airfilter boxes, when the engine has been running in hot conditions, can slightly distort, hence the added precaution of putting grease on the seal between the airbox lid and the housing.

I think you may have not put the cover on correctly, nor greased it thoroughly a very common error. Then the bolts are screwed down and you think its sealed.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I hadn’t touched it from new. I checked it at 2500klms and that’s when I noticed it! The cover was on correctly you can see where the dirt is on the inside and where it has come through to the clean side.
@@KevinMyers-nd5lm When I buy a bike, I look over it closely, things come loos, things don't get oiled, things don't get greased. I don't know what happened to your bike but that is not normal.
Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV the larger surface area means it can be used for longer before I clean it again. Around 75% of my riding is on the same off-road routes around my area in regional Victoria (then I do the occasional adventure trips when I have time), so the conditions are generally the same, or very similar (ie very dry and dusty). In the same conditions I’m cleaning my filter almost half as frequently as I used to with uni. I use No Toil oil on both filters. After a few months I cut the Funnelweb in half when it was time to be cleaned, and no dirt had passed through the the centre of the foam, the dirt was retained in roughly the outer 10% of the filter where it first comes into contact with the tacky No Toil (the filter oil is worked through to the inside as well). The thick polyurethane band around the rim means rim grease isn’t required and I get a great seal (cleaning the metal mesh behind the filter with alcohol wipes showed zero signs of dust). All in all I think it’s a better filter for dusty conditions. That’s my experience.
A bit of grease inside the air box is also a good idea tends to pick up any dust that may get through and also lets you know if you have a leak. Was something I used to do on my enduro bikes.

The ease of air cleaner service alone is almost enough for me to move from the 1090 to the Tenere 700... good stuff!
I know what you mean, I have a 1290. My DRZ400E has 3 dzus fasteners on a side panel, and voila, you’re in.

Front facing snorkel taking air from under the tank, easy to get to and service. Makes more sense than other ADV bikes on the market.

He did give a reason. It seals between the lid and the airbox. Grease doesn't affect the plastic. He recommends high temperature grease.

I’m trying to find the UNI filter for my new T700. Does anyone have a part number? A search on the UNI website comes up empty.
I found it straight away on the unifilteraustralia site. It even has our MADTV airfilter video. Go to motorcycle, then Adventure then Yamaha XTZ690.

Not totally convinced, I had dust on the outside (engine side) of the air filter in the first 2500klms of the bikes life!!!

When using any grease/oil etc, wear gloves.
That crap soaks in and it can get you eventually.
