The old chihiro was suffering from some power on issues and general failure after boot up. Here you can see what the problems were with the board and what was done to it.
I am always wondering why I see guys with more skills than me online on youtube vids that don't have a Hakko 808. The time saved and minimized heat to your components is like a whole different universe, it's the best tool I own. :)
hahaha, i have the same setup, in my house of the deth3 cabinet, a few months in the past, i cleaned up the inside of the mobo, now its like brand new. awsome system. im looking for virtua cop3 to let it run in the cab...thanks luke.
Wow man, that GPU seems to have overheated a lot, that thermal paste was rock-solid :O If I were you, I would replace that fan with a bigger one :) Great video as always ;)
Stupid question but i have a solder sucker and it never seems to work well. Am i supposed to be using it whilst heating the solder or do it whilts solder is cold?
Pretty kool. Odd question, I've seen on a few of these games a warning about "This game is to be played in Japan only" . I've seen it on a few games elsewhere. Is this generally due to copyright, or are there other reasons they put this on so many games?
I would suggest using solder flux. It will help melt the solder VERY SIGNIFICANTLY. I do repairs for consoles and computers, and it's just a bad idea not to use flux.
If you do a ton of desoldering and you have the dough, get a real motorized desoldering iron like a Hakko 808. I wish I had bought mine years and years ago, I've had mine around 2 years and it saves me COUNTLESS hours compared to solder suckers. But yeah, if you have to use a manual solder sucker, you need flux, or you will fry components and burn traces eventually because of too much heat.
Hi Luke did you put standard thermal paste on the gpu also? I'm having the same problem and in considering removing the fans while the board has been dismantled
I'd imagine capacitor failure is common when you base your hardware on the OG Xbox. Also, do you know where I could find one of these boards? I've been wanting to play Ollie King and a few other games, and I don't know a reliable place to get one.
Ya, I think you can even expand the Xbox 1's memory or something and then it's almost a 1:1 thing that SHOULD be able to run Arcade games like my personal favorite, Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune (3?)

Sweet repair video, man! And Crazy Taxi: High Roller?! That's gonna be a sick game can't wait to see gameplay of that one!!
Nothing like waking up to a new Luke video :D
Had no idea Chihiro's were made out of Xbox boards! Great vid as always Luke :)
The unpopulated capacitor spots were populated on 1.0 revision xbox motherboards, but some were removed in later revisions.
Always before you take the caps out is take a picture- That one Step has saved my ass more than once ;)

yep. Ironically, Ghost Squad runs on the Chihiro Hardware, but it was ported on a non-Xbox system which was the Nintendo Wii.
Wonderful video and hardware as always :)
I've always wondered this considering he wears some pretty sweet suits to his job.

rad video..hey what kind of thermal paste do you use??

dam, that board looks like an original xbox motherboard, kinda wonder if its possible to convert a retail box to a chihiro.
Backhand Luke rocks!
While it's still molten. Unless it's got a heated tip, then it should melt the solder for you.
Sounds like the fans could use some lubrication. I hear clicking when you had it on.

Sega Chihiro looks like a first xbox
Cool board, an intel PC like arcade board?
Luke, how is the neo geo cab parts cleaning going?

I always wondered if its possible to flash the Chihiro BIOS to a Xbox ver 1.0 (1MB chip).
Nice work.
I got Crazy Taxi 3 on regular Xbox - imo its ok :-)
Sega and Microsoft did a joint venture. Sega wanted the xbox to be the next dreamcast. Btw solder wick for the caps when removing
hey Luke. just curious, what's your day job?
Ha. Ive worked with enough XBOXs to recognize that board :P I wonder if you can put a mod chip in it to play normal games.
You need something like a Hakko 808 to make your life easier :)
but it is still connected via an IDE cable.
Basically an Xbox based arcade board?
The disc drive on chihiro is a typical Naomi GD-ROM type, 1GB special discs only, it can't read DVDs like xbox1.
I believe it's SCSI for data.
Hmmm Xbox PCB?? Interesting, wonder if you can pull the bios from one and load it up on a retail xbox?
That's it? hm. well, ok. :) Thanks!
scsi cables are wider. The main board looks like a stock xbox.
i am fast.
that shit looks like na xbox from inside
Actually chihiro is based on Xbox hardware
is it me or that board looks like an xbox classic mainboard o.O
Modzie That's because the Chiriro is based off of an original Xbox
Its an xbox
Is that a original xbox motherboard? Lol
haha you can't say the xbox one anymore XD
