Use of banana stem haylage as cattle feed

Natural disasters, including heavy monsoon rains, droughts, and cyclones are a regular phenomenon in Bangladesh. During and immediately after disasters, food shortages for household livestock are common. Mindful of this challenge, through its work with poor and extremely poor households from the char and haor regions, USAID's SHOUHARDO III program, implemented by CARE Bangladesh has explored animal feed production opportunities. The program has found that a nutritious, compact, and easily stored cattle feed can be produced using banana stem- a waste product generated during the banana harvest.
