Great reaction Lauren, even though we disagree on who the better one is. Lol. That's fine. It's OK to disagree. I thought you had a good analysis of the lyric changes. I have no idea why he picked those changes but I like it. Some of my favorite Tool songs are the more progressive ones. Anyway, great reaction Lauren!!!

    1. “Don’t bother”. Please
    2. Both versions are my favorite
    3. The difference in the two versions to me is a transition from anger to sorrow or loss. I know you prefer that “angry Maynard”!
    4. Tool live always changes up at least one song, that I’ve attended. Sometimes guest artist as well as in this live version. Tool makes its changes epic. Check out Opiate 2, I first heard it live in 2018.
    5. Thank you for the reaction.

Once during the second leg of the Lateralus tour (most mind blowing show to this day) and once in 2019 and again on February 4th when they played this song but it was closer to the original version of it. @@MusicCatsandCoffee They most certainly did! Amazeballs reaction! Maybe I'm just closed-minded but I prefer bands to play a song I REALLY love as close to the original sound as possible UNLESS they can challenge that. Quick example; I'm sure I, along with all other A Perfect Circle fans, love the original studio version of '3 Libras'. Such a Beautiful melodic intimate song but when I heard their live remixed version a few years ago (can be found on their Stone & Echo Live record), FOR ME, it challenged the original and made it so badass that I can't not just keep going back to it. I love both versions of both these songs (3 Libras and Pushit) but when it comes to preference, I'd have to say it depends on my mood. Also, Maynard's voice live is just **Chef kisses** magnifique! Thank you for the reaction! :D \m/

I’ve seen them once in 2016 and unfortunately they didn’t play Pushit. But they did give us No Quarter to open the show up, which was amazing. As far as Pushit goes though I think I prefer the album version as well if I had to pick, but the Salival version is almost just as good. And I wouldn’t be mad if they gave that to me at a show instead of the studio. The original song is still mostly intact, I’d still feel like I got to hear it.

  • @Cougar2118

The live recordings were taken from their 1998 tour. From the linear notes, the live songs were not given site specific credit as to which ones they used for the album. Red Rocks Colorado is mentioned which I was very fortunate to be at. The open air acoustics of the venue can give it the type of vocal quality. Even though I cannot say which parts or tracks may be from that show, I do still get that nostalgic vibe from witnessing the set list they used.

I have experience Tool in concert twice on their '10,000 days' tour in 2006/ '07... Quite an experience w/ a laser light show and special effects projections on stage (literally ON the stage) ... First time, I'll never forget on the song 'Vicarious', they had this heavy middle section... a muscle-bound wrestler in a mask, pranced onto the stage wearing a tutu around his waist and twirled around like a ballerina to the rhythm on the song 😂... For the encore, the band came out while the crowd was cheering loudly, and just sat there soaking it all in... and then get on the mic and said, "Kansas City was louder..." (This was in Minneapolis😂 )
At the second show, I was on the floor & up front; Tool came on and Adam Jones (guitar) was sporting pigtails 😂... They did a few epic tracks for the second hour of the show. A highlight for me was 'Parabol/ Parabola' 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Tool has an unusual stage configuration - Maynard James Keenan stands & sings in the shadows at the back of the stage, next to Danny Carey (drums) who handles most of the band's electronics and samples, judging by his impressive setup. Adam Jones & Justin Chancellor (bass) are the only ones up front interacting w/ the crowd, but they seem more focused on keeping the Tool music churning along...
Definitely a band I would highly recommend seeing live when they come to town!

Hi Lauren! I wonder if the lyric changes have anything to do with some personal growth Maynard may have done between the time the song was written and that tour. As far as hearing a new version of a song at a concert, I wouldn't be opposed to it. If they have something different to offer, I want to hear it. I may be disappointed but I might just love it. I've seen Tool 3 times. I had no idea if I had heard this live or not so I looked up the set lists for two of the shows but couldn't find the other one. Pushit wasn't on either list. Tool was just here, in Houston, in early Feb. I would've loved to go, but I just don't want to be around that many people right now, for a few reasons. Plus ticket prices are crazy outrageous. They did play Pushit at that show. I can't wait for your Eulogy reaction! : )

I was not at this *specific* concert where this version was recorded, but I did go to a show on that tour. That's the only time I've ever seen them do that version. The rest of the time was the album version.
The BEST experience I've had with this song was when I saw Tool as an opening act at the 3rd annual Primus NYE show, where Tool was an opening act. This was NY '95/96, and half of the show were songs off of AEnima, and it was one of (if not the) first time Justin played live with the band. Now note that AEnima didn't come out until September of '96, so we heard songs off of that album almost *9 months* before anyone else. Truly epic. BTW, someone put that show up on RUclips a while back, here's the link, for those who couldn't be there. lol. ruclips.net/video/t_nFCRJ4rqg/видео.html

Just saw them January 30th in Tulsa. This is on the setlist. They are playing the album version. Apparently Danny's tabla teacher sat in on this performance.

I also prefer the studio version of the song. But I was perplexed about the mixed opinions about this one as well. I think it's a very good version of the song and I'm glad it exists. The only reason I can see why people might not like it that much is because it's more focussed on Maynards voice and that he sounds a bit thinner than he does on record. For a live version this is still a phenomenal performance though.
I've seen them live a couple of years ago just before Fear Inoculum was released. I believe they probably planned to release the album before the start of the tour, but it got delayed (again) and so they only played 3 new songs and the rest were some of their most successful songs from earlier albums. It was a really cool experience and I can't wait to see them again this year.
It was noticeable that Maynard doesn't have the same energy anymore as he did in the nineties though. Which I'm not blaming him for, I mean that's almost 30 years ago now, but from what I've seen here on RUclips Tool concerts back then used to be a pretty intense experience to put it mildly. I would definitely recommend you to watch some live videos from the Undertow / AEnima period. There's the one famous festival version of Sober that was filmed by professionals, but there's also tons more that were filmed in indoor concerts by audience members. The audio quality in these isn't as good of course, but the atmosphere is something else entirely. You should definitely check them out at some point.

I don't mind if songs are played different live, but it's good when you get a heads up beforehand like this instead of being disappointed in the middle of the song. Another thing to think about is that when this was performed everyone wasn't recording it on their phones and uploading it to youtube, so only the people who were at the show got to hear this version at the time.

I get wanting to go to a concert to hear the album version live… but if TOOL wants to play a different version, in a different light, consider yourself, and all around you, the luckiest people alive in that moment… as it’s more rare than seeing lightning strike 3 times, in one place, in a row… TOOL is probably one of the few, if not only artists, where I would welcome a different version, under a different light…

As for the change of the lyrics I can tell you it is more of a clarification. simply put he is saying that the infant before him is his child and he is no one to judge or to strike it down. in his mind he’s thinking back about how he was judged and struck down by his step father maybe? but he will not do that to the infant which is now before him … so now instead of saying what is it he said “who are you” it’s a little bit more of a clarification

So now that you have a good grasp on the song, I'm going to repeat my comment from Part 1. I STRONGLY recommend "The Fan" video to be a Part 3. It's a live performance, and a fan gets on stage drunk, and attempts to hug Maynard. Maynard hip tosses him, get's on top, and sings the rest of the song. The "scrambling to keep my feet flat on the ground" lyrics (missing from the salival version) happen during that. There is one good video of the entire song, cut together from different cams. Not great audio, but it's my favourite performance of the song. He screams in the guys ear. It's a 9m43s video and hopefully I can link it to you here ruclips.net/video/SyYV58OTQ-0/видео.html - Cheers

    This live version is EPIC!
I feel that it shits all over the Album Version.
Possibly the most beautiful Live song I have ever experienced 😍
If they played this live and I wasn't there to experience it...... I would be pissed!

    Personally...I prefer both)
They just have a bit of a different vibe to one another. Tool is the only band got me to listening record and live versions of the single song, depending on the mood. With Push it and Third Eye for sure, but...I kinda appreciate Opiate and demo records versions of some songs the same way. Like, Part of Me and Jerk-off - got just moments, when one version wins over the other, but other moments, when it's opposite

i like both version. the og version seems to me a first timer in a toxic relationship while the live version is a veteran.

After this video I don't know what your Tool schedule looks like but if you want to go back to heavy/angry Maynard I suggest Jerk Off (album version and live video) and Hooker With a Penis (yes that's the actual name of the song lol). To answer your question, I like both versions for different reasons but if I had to pick one I would go with the album version because without that one then the live version wouldn't exist

Saw them last October at aftershock and they played this song like the studio version. Fucking amazing. This one ok but not as good

You just make me sad with your questions ;) It is like 15 years ago that I saw them live, and I really don’t remember which version they played :D
And lyrically (is this the right term? Lyrics-wise?) I prefer this live version, cause it is more „mature“. Originally the song was maybe written in anger, hence you see yourself as the victim, but a relationship is to a big part dialectic and it is the interaction between the two that makes it toxic. And then musically I am a bit torn, since on a certain level I also prefer the album version - it is simply better produced and mixed and everything than any live version can be. On the other hand, the changes made address the lyrical changes, so I feel like, since I prefer the changed lyrics, I have to stick with the live version.

I saw Tool live 3 times in the past week, which means I've heard Pushit 3 times. The studio version each time. That particular live version was something very special, for those who got to witness it in person.
I would always be totally excited if Tool said they were going to do a new version of a song. One main reason is, well just consider all those people who went to that concert over 20 years ago. They hold something very special.

From a musician's point of view; I don't like to play the same song the same way from gig to gig. On the same note, when I go to a show I don't want them to play it exactly like the album version; if that were the case, I could just listen to the album and save my money. Like a band, I think a song should be allowed to grow and evolve.

The more you hear it the better it gets like every Tool song. The don't bother people who like Tool for the big hits. I mean if you say your a Tool fan and you say don't bother listening to that song then your not a fan or part of the army. Rant over. Lol

I'll be honest, the first time I heard this version I really didn't like it. I just thought it took too much time to "get started" and that it was too slow. It was not a surprise that their next album would be a bit more meditative just by hearing the rendition. Anyway, I really like this version now, though I still prefer the album version. I have seen Tool twice and the last time they performed the album version of this and I it was everything that I hoped it would be.
Would I be pissed if I went to a concert and the band performed a different version of my favorite song? It depends on if the new version sucked or not lol

Examine this song as a person training Jui Jitsu. I think Mr. Keenan was giving us a sense of an abusive sexual relationship but he was talking about training BJJ. It can get confusing with the lyrics. It is well known that "Maynard" is a student of the craft. Just something to think about... I could be wrong.

Only saw them once during a rockfestival in Germany in the early 90s when they were touring for the Undertow album. Was absolutly awful :-)
When it comes to Push It there can be only one answer: the Album version rules by a landslide. The more often I hear that Salival watered down version the more I'm disappointed.
But that's coming from someone who can't appreciate the Fear Inoculum Album so I guess it comes down to the question: do you prefer young, angry, powerful Maynard or tame, wise and poetic Maynard.
