FWIW.... The further from the edge of the stream you can go & still dig down for water, the better, in terms of filtration. Empty the well of the water that initially filled it. That water has "dirt" from the digging of the hole. As the hole refills, there should be fewer suspended particles. Use any available natural or man-made available materials to remove water from the hole. Especially the first filling. Discarded cans & bottles litter the landscape, even in more remote areas. A shoe can be a dipper. Same for some types of hats/caps. A piece of clothing to "sop" it up and wring it out. Large leaves can make scooping with your hand more effective. Pieces of bark to "shovel" it out of the hole. River cane / bamboo used as a straw. (Insert hollow straw, put finger over top end, then lift straw. Remove finger to release water.)
Another tip: Line the hole with your shirt, after you initially dump the first filling of water. Let the fabric filter, what it will, as the hole refills.
Along a stream, look for sandy areas to dig your well. Don't know about other areas. Around here, a stream can have muddy areas (as shown in the video) and sandy spots, as well. Worth the effort, to walk a ways (if possible) to look for bends in the water course. Or other features that may result in a sand bank.
Just some thoughts to supplement a good point on making water a little more safe to drink, when other options are not available. Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea. This is truly a biblical fact. My nephew tried this while he was in Iraq serving his country. He said that he also used a barrel with rocks in it then he came upon charcoal and put that second. Lifted the barrel up on to another barrel and purified water . What you shared sure helped me. Some people are not lucky enough to find all the other items. Thank you Black Scout for all you do to help us.

Long term use of a well like this would be to make bricks and to dig it 2 feet below the water line, make a brick bottom and add clean gravel from boiled water, and brick walls filled with sand to 1 foot below the water line, and fill the rest with clay. Doing this will have the water only come from the bottom and will give some debris filtration and reduce cloudiness. It won’t kill bacteria, but it will reduce sediment and help with taste.

Take that water with sediment and put in a plastic bottle. With lid on tight...tie some paracord on it and begin to sling it in a circle. The sediment will be on the bottom separated from the cleaner water. It is a like a centrifuge in a lab separating blood cells and plasma.
