Matthews Grant - Does God’s Knowledge Quash Free Will?

  • How can God's perfect knowledge not eliminate free will? Since God-to-be-God can never be wrong and knows everything, including propositions about future events, how can those propositions about future events, which God knows now, not come to pass in the actual future? Hence, if we cannot do otherwise than what God knew prior, how can we have free will?

    The comments here manifest that this discussion is much too advanced at least for anyone following this channel. I very much appreciate this concise summation of Grants’ recent monograph on the topic, as a fellow philosopher writing on the same topics. For the general listener to be able to begin understanding what’s being discussed here, he would need to have already much familiarity with Aristotelian, Thomistic, and analytic philosophy, which very few have the time and talent to pursue successfully.

    Without God nothing could exist so he's a necessary condition for free action. The reason action is free is because he makes/is making us as the kind of things that act freely.
    You might see aquinas say God moves our free will, but the word move there means actualizes our being and ability to act at all.

      I describe it as "God underwrites our existence", but he does not cause us to act as we do in our moral agency, at least not typically, he's of course free to do so if he sees fit, bur such determinations do not factor into that which we are judged for.

    Matthews Grant differentiates between God 'determining' a person's actions and God 'causing' their actions. He defines quite clearly what he means by God 'determining' the actions but he doesn't then define what he means by God 'causing' the actions. Matthews, if you are reading this, please can you clarify?

      God creates within creatures power to act, and creatures use this power. God causing our act is our use of his power to bring about our actions. So God decrees by virtue of his knowing that we would use our free will in that way

      that is because you really have to understand the terminology of Classical Theology. All the terms make perfect sense and are logical, but you have to know terms like "logically prior" vs "Prior" sufficient, necessary, existence, volition...
      His argument is sound but it all hinges on his definition of what is required for an act to be determined by God. 6:00 starts this part. 2 conditions.. to refute his argument you need to prove why these two conditions are not the best way to frame the logical requirements for God determining an act.

  • @bartholomewtott3812
    @bartholomewtott3812 5 лет назад +1

    What does logically sufficient mean?

    • @NightCrafted
      @NightCrafted Год назад

      It means that where it exists, its effect must exist. This is different from a necessary condition. So for example, look at the statement: "if John is in the room, then the light is on"
      The light being on is a necessary condition for John being in the room, but just because the light is on, doesn't always mean John is in the room. But John being in the room always means that the light is on, so John is a sufficient condition for the light being on

  • @mohammedhanif6780

    but God's foreknowledge is logically sufficient for the act to conform to it and is prior to the act, so human acts cannot have libertarian freedom

  • @melgross

    Sigh, his argument is really nonsensical. He’s really trying hard to merge two diametrically differing views, and he’s failing.
    The problem is moral. If people do immoral things, and we have no free will to choose not to, then it can be laid at the feet of god that we did that immoral act. That’s not acceptable in the western religious sense. Therefore, we must have free will so that our immoral acts are of our own will, and do not come from god. That is acceptable in the western religious sense.
    But god is omniscient, so free will isn’t possible. I presented an argument in another interview in this series.

    Once you understand that God and it's voice is very similar to the AI and voices that our Creator had humans build with their human hands, then you will understand how us created men in God learn how to navigate around in the fake worlds they observe. Each created man in the world they wake up in are programmed with information ( such as the info that gives them a personality ) that will lead them to whatever it is they become in the world. If you're programmed to become a good gardener for example, you will be fed information as you grow up that attracts you to plants and how to take care of them. This is all programmed by our Creator so our Creator is in total control of how you're created and what you will become in this world. Think of yourself as a programmed AI with a voice that will learn on the go and become whatever our Creator programmed you to become.
