I remember buying an EP with the songs "Bit of Betlam" and "Mambo in" in the late fifties. We listened, smoked grass and danced like crazy to the music.
Very musical. Some conga players play tons of 32notes etc and forget to solo musically. The solo and playing was tastefully and full of melodic solos etc. Really appreciate the music
Yes that is Doc Barnett on bongos! He was one my teachers in DC back in the day. Yeah I am not sure if folks from that era are aware of this video. I am just curious as to what year this was though.
It took me many years, but I am just now gaining much appreciation for Candido! Always have been a big Billy Taylor fan, and never really appreciated him, but I'm now beginning to truly understand that every member of the video plays a crucial part to the final product. I appreciate you so much JVG! You have definitely helped shape/foster my love for jazz at such a young age!! I'm going to share your vids wherever I can!
GREAT TUNE, GREAT PLAYERS. CANDIDO PLAYED WITH EVERYONE. I HAD ALL THE GEORGE SHEARING RECORDS. HE CAME AS AN ACT LATTER ON TO THE RALEIGH CATSKILL HOTEL. I PLAYED HIS ACT AND HE REALLY COMPLEMENTEDY PLAYING.
Candido is like 1000 year's old of course he doesn't play like he was young but we should pay respect to all musician's cause they gave us something to strive for.
From ,el maestr,Spanish Harlem, king priest, king of kings of conga ,there will b no other than this almost 100years,old concerto, dios lo bendiga ,gracias ,I'm still learning I'm 58 yrs old ,amen ,
That's Cándido Camero one of most important cuban "congueros" ever. He's presently 99 and is THE CONGA KING among to Chano Pozo, Mongo Santamaría, Patato, Aguabella and Armando Peraza. Legends.
This is a true Master Conga Player. My first LP was Candido. He could play so melodically, that I had to pick up a Conga and I wanted to play 1/2 of what he played.
candido is a genius, its performance is unmistakable, is identified with ease. even by leigos.quem was once you connect, and says: I know is beating, is the dance of black candido.na in Brazil, capoeira is that it has a song that says; if black is good, clap for ele.candido deserves because he's great.
It's Jazz alright, but LATIN in capitals, the bass is playing is playing traditional tumbadora patterns, and that's a traditional 3/2 son montuno clave, played throughout. Don't know much about B. Taylor, but lovely melodies, he def, got latin chops on this one, gonna check him out thanks for educating me JV Guy!

@MrsRoman4eva. I watched this video and thought to myself Candido had gotten a little old by this time, but still sounds good. He was one of the first Cuban drummers who had learned how to interface well with American jazz players, Then as I scrolled down to the comments, I thought to myself, I'll bet some armchair quarterback found something wrong with this, and lo and behold, there you are, predictable.

BEGINNER!! He is responsible for starting a movement of independents and Melody on congas. Of course he’s almost 100 years now but in the 40s and 50s that was cool and ahead of his time. You need to learn about music, with all do respect !
He plays his drums like a piano, left hand chords, right hand whatever, know Candido from way back, great stuff, swings.
Billy Taylor with Candido! How can you go wrong!?! Gee I wish there was more music like that made today!
Dig that little Manteca quote in there. I always appreciated Candido's melodic approach to conga playing. That's what distinguishes him from the rest.
Don Candido Camero ❤✨️🔥
simply beautiful.pulls your ear right into the sound.
Nothing in this world will ever stop candido & his wonderful playing skills he made for conga drumming!
will remain my Top 3 songs.
Yes I love his style..

We just lost Candido a few months ago. He was in his late 90s. What a force of nature.
Candido era un fenomeno, era el hombre de los mil dedos...
Thanks Jazz Video! Wonderful cats!
Billy Taylor has a joyous sound.
Extraordinary Candido!
Is that "The Doctor" Barnette Williams of The Midnight Band? Wow! wonder whether fans of Gil Scott-Heron have seen this footage. Excellent thanks.

What a wonderful arrangement! I cherish the two Candido LPs I have: one from th3e early years, the other from the disco era.
via el gran congero!!

TÁ .. SUPER. GRACIAS
fantastic!
Its like he's playing a melody with his drums behind the beat. I like that.
wow he melodically quoted manteca WITH DRUMS! AMAZING!
love the relaxed way he gets the tumbao out of the drums. Not mad crazy on the quite straight formulas he uses for the solos.
really sweet!
RIP, maestro.
he is missed
Greatest
Remarkable man, that Candido. Billy, too.

Amazing how Candido can make so much sound without hardly touching the congas :-) I wonder how old he is?Must be getting on...

@MrsRoman4eva I see where you're coming from, but Candido still plays with great precision and soul here. I can dig it! He's the real deal.
RIP Billy Taylor

Fighting high
Great clip!. BTW, Candido's last name is Camero, not Cameron as listed in the notes.
RIP Billy TAylor
@MrsRoman4eva Tin Cans?
candido is very good.
0:50 mans be looking like RoboCop
your favorite movie?
Would be nice to see today's jazz include more African roots and rhythms
He’s a classic they don’t make them like that anymore
These people can't be replaced.
Like Patato once said, to play congas, you must treat them like a woman. You must caress them and be gentle to get what you want out of
them.
Great Video! Candido is the best! However, his last name is spelled incorrectly. It is Candido Camero......no "n" at the end. Thanks.
He is the Roland Kirk of conga
ha!
Dear Egha, please take a step back and control yourself. He is now over 90 years old.
😂😂😂😂
@JazzVideoGuy
I respect your opinion, but I wonder if you are truly listening to the descarga that candido bring when he plays.

JazzVideo Guy, I respect your opinion, but I wonder if you are truly listening to the descarga that candido bring when he plays.

打的好穩哈哈~~但手一定痛壞了~~~
Michael Jordan on Congas!! lml,
More like a Bill Russell!
Nose porque tanto si ni siquiera le sabe pegar alas congas el señor
No sé trata de virtuosismo..si no del respeto a una figura y su trayectoria!

Candido repeats his conga slaps, nothing fresh, nothing out of this world, very basic, Williams on bongitos holds steady
why is he a legend?? he plays conga like a beginner to me. I'm not even impressed
Egha Kusuma you don t understand music ....sorry ...
