NHL and Arizona Coyotes hold press conference after announcement of team's move to Utah

- The National Hockey League and Arizona Coyotes will host a media availability with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Coyotes Chairman and Governor Alex Meruelo. This comes after the NHL has confirmed the Arizona Coyotes team has been sold and is moving to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Imagine being charged for season tickets for a team that no longer exists. Then when you go to get a refund, the owner of the company tells you “give me some time so I can breathe”. True professionals
I think it’s all a smokescreen. It’s for the NHL and Alex to look better instead of being villains for selling the team.

What an embarassing shitshow of a press conference from both Bettman and Meruelo. My hockey heart breaks for Coyotes fans, they deserve so much better.
Indeed, but it goes with the embarrassing logo and DISGRACEFUL arena! With the howling head and dt arena talks, I thought the Yotes were on an overdue major turnover...now so happy to see that fiasco FINALLY out of the league!
What a sad phase in the saga of the franchise whose history dates back to the original Winnipeg Jets. This is the franchise which won 3 Avco Cups, two teams led by Bobby Hull, Ulf Nilsdon and Anders Hedberg. This is the organization rebuilt by John Ferguson who rebuilt a gutted franchise while still in the WHA leading them to the last ever Avco Cup championship only to be gutted again upon entry into the NHL. Three years later, they became the most improved team in NHL history. This same franchise came within minutes of moving back to Winnipeg.
I say put this franchise out of its misery and reassemble the assets into a brand new entity. Sell the Winnipeg Jets 1.0 assets to the current Jets, particularly the WHA history records and Avco Cup.
I hope one day that the Roadrunners return to Phoenix and one day the rights to the name and copyright are appropriated by an interest putting an NHL team in Phoenix.
Alex really shot himself in the foot with the "I don't like the media" comment. The reporters got bolder with their questioning and Bettman was not happy.
Cleary we can see why this guy doesn't like to be in front of a camera. Squirrely, sassy, Bettman having to clean up several remarks in the moment. Not very professional with tough (yet valid and justified) questions. Rough to watch, I'm sure that didn't bring much closure to the fans at all.

Just don't think this is the guy we need owning a NHL FRANCHISE in Arizona. He just doesn't seem like a businessman. IMO Anyone that owns a sports team IS THE FACE OF THE FRANCHISE! That individual needs to be out there, communicating and visual or not, CAN'T HIDE UNDER A ROCK!
Talk about amateur hour with Meruelo. Hands down the worst owner in the league. I’m so glad to see the team move so he is no longer involved. I feel bad for the Coyotes fans and players, they deserve better. I’m excited for this new team in Utah with good ownership in a beautiful location and hope to see hockey return to Phoenix with a different, better owner than Meruelo.
The Coyotes are such jabronis! You never once decided to move Downtown Phoenix where EVERYONE can transit and travel too. That Glendale stadium was such a miserable idea and still is. No one ever wants to go down to that stadium.

I feel badly for the Arizona fans. The NHL should be embarrassed over the lying. They did to the fans there. They strung them along for decades. They gave them terrible ownership just so they could recoup money. The NHL is not to be trusted!

The owners were terrible. The owners screwed the fans. If the NHL didn’t care about the Coyotes they would have been gone in 2005.
@@5hrsbefore1998 strung them along this season. They were going to move the team but didn’t want to lose any potential fan income this season. The NHL did not want to lame duck team with local fans, hating them. They took advantage of Phoenix and Arizona. Yes, the former owner sucks and he should never be allowed to own an expansion franchise. Complete disaster.
How far is this land from downtown driving wise? Is it like Glendale or what I’m not from there . Are they close to the fanbase or not
North Scottsdale. Scottsdale road and 101- it’s desert right now. Literally desert. I doubt it’ll work. The major or Scottsdale hates this guy and hockey
The parcel in North Phoenix/North Scottsdale is not as ideal as the Tempe location would’ve been, but it’s better than Glendale as far as affording East Valley residents the opportunity to get to a game. There were some BS moments to be sure here, but one of the truthful things was that it took an hour and a half during rush hour to get to Glendale during a weeknight because of a myriad of factors (speaking for myself when I lived there: I worked in tech support for a company who supported Californian businesses, and didn’t get off work until 6 PM due to Arizona not following daylight savings time.) East Valley can use the 101 loop to get there, Phoenicians can use that or the AZ-51 to head up, and West Valley can use their stretch of the 101 to get there. By contrast, the only practical way for most of the valley to get to Glendale was to take the 10 through the heart of Phoenix to get to the western segment of the 101 (and once the 202 extension was completed to connect Chandler/Gilbert to West Valley, the team was evicted from Glendale.)

The lady's question about March 6th at 20:43 is why I dont buy it. Gary said early on the league was ok with being at mullet 3-5 years (if an arena was being built) but 3-5 was still ok. So why do we have to rush this deal? Gary says the next auction is June 27. Give him the 60 days until auction. Just give them their 3rd year in mullet if june 27 is too late to plan changes for next year, 3 was ok, remember, and move next year without the rush. Maybe he wins the auction and a new barn will be enroute. Seems like a lot to go through for not wanting to wait 60 days. Its bc they have no faith in that plan either and this is the easiest way for the owner to walk away. I hope yotes fans dont hold out hope.

Last time the NHL had a team go inactive due to difficulties with a promise to reactivate, it was the Brooklyn/New York Americans due to WWII. After the war ended the owner tried to reinstate the team, but was screwed by the NHL going back on their reinstatement promises and by the Rangers who did not want competition in the city.

It seems like they tried to "structure" a get out of jail free card. "It's not over, just paused" to curb anger, and in 5 years ppl won't care as much when the pausing, I assume, expires. By that time, the billion dollar check has long cleared at the expense of those die hards who will hold out hope.
Fans in Phoenix didn't show up to support the team. Every time I went to a game there from Vegas the Jobing Arena was half empty, heck, there were as many VGK fans as yotes fans then they move to a college arena with 4500 seats? No brainer to leave this market. Good luck in SLC.

I think this guy gets a bad rap .... I've never seen a franchise owner fight harder to stay in a city. Typically they're using the threat of moving as means of extorting a new arena from the taxpayers.

Anyone blaming Bettman for this is an idiot. Team should've been gone years ago. He's the only reason it lasted this long. Bettman was probably totally embarrassed w/ this as he had to continue to step in control the entire press conference. Now w/o a team they can look for a real owner for the next team. They want the market. This clown won't be owning anything as he's got no allies in the region. It will be 10+ years before a team gets back... I'll be eligible for social security....
