Yes!!!! Of that group of old-school crooners, swing, jazz type singers my favourites have always been Bobby Darin and Dean Martin - their voices appeal to me far far more than Sinatra. Of the modern generation ones, I love Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr and Italian Patrizio Buanne.
Bobby Darin was a great performer. He had it all, and left us when he was far too young. I am a HUGE Darin fan. This one was on my list for you, but I have a few others up my sleeve I know you'll like. He's the only rocker who was also a saloon-style crooner, one who can hold a candle to Sinatra. That's a mouthful, but I say it's true. Pitch-perfect, with a fabulous voice and all the stage magic you could ever want. Great natural rhythm along-side subtle yet powerful moves Bobby simply has to snap his fingers, or do a quick little side step, to get the his audiences' rapt and loving attention.
In my opinion Bobby Darrin wad one of the very best jazz/swing singers. His Mac The Knife and Up A Lazy River are every bit as good if not better than Beyond The Sea. Thank you for reacting to him.
In one of the Austin Powers movies Dr. Evil dances to this song. It was the first time I heard this song & for years I thought the song was written for the movie.

Bobby was absolutely brilliant and could perform any genre (rock, jazz, folk, big band, - even movie/contemporary music of early 70s such as "Happy" from Lady Sings the Blues movie) as if the any of those genres were his "trademark genre"- it was truly that effortless for Bobby to "mix it up" and if you listen to songs such as "If I were a Carpenter" or "Simple Song of Freedom" (folk); "Mack the Knife", "Up the Lazy River" or "Gyp the Cat" (Jazzy); "Black Coffee" (moodier jazz style); "Splish Splash" (Rock); "Hello Dolly" (show tunes); "Beyond the Sea" (as here) or "More than the Greatest Love" (Big Band/Swing; and "Happy" early 1970s /contemporary movie soundtrack. He also had an incredibly mesmerizing physical presence on stage - there was no doubt when he performed that he owned the stage like a very few have -- and you are so right to compare him to Sammy Davis Jr. ! Bobby's dancing and stage moves were beyond captivating to watch. And also he had a genius IQ/very gifted intellect -- and it extended down to his toes ! And what makes this all the more wondrous is that to Bobby, entertaining was his passion, as he believed his audience deserved nothing less than the highest caliber of performance, and this also tied into his ambitious nature knowing his life would be cut short by his heart condition, he worked tirelessly until the very end when he had a severe heart valve deterioration that ultimately took his life. He had bouts of rheumatic fever as a child, which weakened his heart permanently. He had 2 heart valves replaced and died after heart surgery. I would have to believe that had he lived in today's times, with better health care in particular cardiac care, he might have lived a longer life. So tragic, he was an incredible talent, multifaceted. Thanks again Harri, you are my favorite of the many reactors that I subscribe to, no doubt about it, and it has a lot to do with the way you express your honest feelings about the music and performers that you react to.
As a kid, I loved watching Bobby Darin. Rather than dancing, I remember him playing the drums on a musical break and then coming back to the front to sing some more. He had a heart condition and knew he would probably die young. Many people think that gave him more of an impetus to do so many things. He had no time to waste.
Bobby Darin was also a member of "the Mensa club" which is an organization of the most Highest IQ"s and intellectuals. He could do anything and was a natural dancer, his moves were so natural, he had such rhythm that Sammy Davis Jr. said "Bobby Darin is a white man with a black man's soul and rhythm". I've always felt that is so true, the way Bobby has such natural moves when he danced, you could always tell he "felt it" every time he sang and danced. One of my fav movies by Bobby Darin is "Pressure point" where he plays a kkk nazi white man in America and he is in prison, he is having problems sleeping, so the new "head psychiatrist" in the prison who is a black man (Sidney Poiter) starts seeing him to help him and when Bobby first walks into the room and see's it's a black man who is going to be his doctor he starts laughing and mocking and saying terrible racist things to the doctor, and the doctor has to keep taking it. But as time goes on he starts hearing this prisoner's "horrific life story" his dad beating and torturing him,etc. and he gets deep into his psyche and actually ends up helping him. It is a very very interesting movie and Bobby was suburb actor in it. He was nominated for an academy award for this movie I believe. He played a psychopath and did it well.
Ok, so I was a young teenager when Darin first came out with 'Splish splash and before that I believe he was a janitor. Bobby was trying to live fast because he had some kind of illness that he knew was supposed to kill him. So he put a whole lot into whatever time he had left on this earth. " Beyond the Sea" was my all time favorite record by Darin! BTW: Everybody thinks of this Sinatra when they hear this song. 😊

In the 60's, a songwriter named Tim Hardin wrote and recorded a song called "If I Were A Carpenter" . Bobby Darin recorded the best cover version. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin recorded an excellent version as well.

Bobby Darin had rheumatic fever when he was a lad and it left him with a heart murmur and he died from it! He would do his act and between he would go to his dressing room and lay on the floor trying to breath then when he was on again he would go back out perform another tune! He was one of the great crooned!

That was originally a French song called La Mer which was translated into an English lyric. He didn’t write that one but he did write songs also. He was part crooner and part rock n roll. He died fairly young from a heart condition from a birth defect. He actually lived much longer than his childhood doctors predicted but still passed fairly young. His final hit was “ if I were a carpenter “ which is my favorite by him. It was written by Jonny Cash wife June Carter. It was recorded by Johnny and June and Bob Seeger covered it also but he definitely recorded the best version of it.

Yes, Charles Trenet sang the original French song La Mer…. a wonderful song. Bobby Darin had a knack for completely changing a song around and making it a huge hit all over again. Bobby had many bouts of childhood rheumatic fever. This severely damaged his heart. Bobby had oxygen tanks side stage during his shows. He lived 37 years, which was beyond his doctor’s expectations. If I Were A Carpenter was written by tortured genius Tim Hardin. Bobby had a hit with it before Tim. In turn, Hardin had a hit with Bobby Darin’s Simple Song Of Freedom. Bobby Darin died in 1973. In his 37 years he covered almost every genre in music. He composed many songs in many genres and played many instruments very well, but could not read music. He absolutely loved performing live…moved into a successful acting career, and was making the move into politics when his time on earth ended. @@lyallg8112 Though I prefer Trénet's performances (he always sang it through once as a ballad, but often sang it the second time in swing -as early as 1952-and he was the author and composer), nonetheless, it was my buying Bobby Darin's recording that prompted my mother to give her two Trénet albums. When I was almost sixteen, I heard Trénet sing it live, and the next year, heard his 1946 recording. I had bought the Darin recording for what was on the other side-Brecht and Weill's Mack the Knife.

It’s actually amazing how many artists have covered Mack The Knife either in its original morbid form😂, or swinging as in Armstrong and Darin style. I thought I had had read that some time ago but I think I’m confusing it with a different song. I should have confirmed it and not been so lazy lol I love Bobby Darin’s music. I first discovered him when I bought a 45 of Mack the Knife “ at a garage sale when I was a kid about 9 years old. I loved the song although I didn’t really understand it at the time lol. It’s still one of my favorite songs.

He had two TV shows on NBC. The first one was only 7 shows, but that was followed by the BOBBY DARIN SHOW which televised 13 shows. That was in 1973 shortly before he had heart surgery, to repair a valve, from which he never recovered. He made a few movies but the best known is COME SEPTEMBER which also starred Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida and Sandra Dee. He was a huge talent. Sad that he left us so young.

Bobby was a tremendous talent taken from us far too young. Around 37 I believe. He was so smooth and self assured but yet charismatic. He seemed to enjoy entertaining more than actually being aware how good he really was. My Mom adored him. Was a popular heartthrob to the gals then too. Had a great personality and was very Professional. Was a big time star.
Bobby also hosted his own TV variety series in '72-'73. I remember watching it as a kid, and I now have the (somewhat edited) DVD set of the show.

But as time goes on he starts hearing this prisoner's "horrific life story" his dad beating and torturing him,etc. and he gets deep into his psyche and actually ends up helping him. It is a very very interesting movie and Bobby was suburb actor in it. He was nominated for an academy award for this movie I believe. He played a psychopath and did it well.
Ok, so I was a young teenager when Darin first came out with 'Splish splash and before that I believe he was a janitor. Bobby was trying to live fast because he had some kind of illness that he knew was supposed to kill him. So he put a whole lot into whatever time he had left on this earth.
" Beyond the Sea" was my all time favorite record by Darin!

He was a dynamic performer. “Beyond the Sea” was composed by a French composer, Charles Trenet. It was called, “La Mer”. There are clips of him performing it on RUclips. I like Bobby Darin’s much better.
Bobby Darin also sang, “Mack the Knife”, and some songs in the mid 1960s, a different style, which I think he wrote, “If I Were a Carpenter” and “Simple Song of Freedom”. Very different than his earlier style but worth listening to.
He had rheumatic fever during childhood and It caused serious heart problems. He and Sandra Dee had a son, Dodd. Although they were divorced, she lived with him and took care of him as his health was failing.

I heard “Beyond the Sea” for the first time when I was about three years old. Visiting family in New Mexico with my mother. I must have heard it on a record or radio. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to being very small and visiting New Mexico.

In the 60's, a songwriter named Tim Hardin wrote and recorded a song called "If I Were A Carpenter" . Bobby Darin recorded the best cover version. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin recorded an excellent version as well.

Bobby Darin had rheumatic fever when he was a lad and it left him with a heart murmur and he died from it! He would do his act and between he would go to his dressing room and lay on the floor trying to breath then when he was on again he would go back out perform another tune! He was one of the great crooned!
Bobby was very versatile as a singer from Swing, bollards, pop, Country and fun records. It was a shame he died so young.

That was originally a French song called La Mer which was translated into an English lyric. He didn’t write that one but he did write songs also. He was part crooner and part rock n roll. He died fairly young from a heart condition from a birth defect. He actually lived much longer than his childhood doctors predicted but still passed fairly young. His final hit was “ if I were a carpenter “ which is my favorite by him. It was written by Jonny Cash wife June Carter. It was recorded by Johnny and June and Bob Seeger covered it also but he definitely recorded the best version of it.

Bobby had many bouts of childhood rheumatic fever. This severely damaged his heart. Bobby had oxygen tanks side stage during his shows. He lived 37 years, which was beyond his doctor’s expectations.
If I Were A Carpenter was written by tortured genius Tim Hardin. Bobby had a hit with it before Tim. In turn, Hardin had a hit with Bobby Darin’s Simple Song Of Freedom.
Bobby Darin died in 1973. In his 37 years he covered almost every genre in music. He composed many songs in many genres and played many instruments very well, but could not read music. He absolutely loved performing live…moved into a successful acting career, and was making the move into politics when his time on earth ended. @@lyallg8112 Though I prefer Trénet's performances (he always sang it through once as a ballad, but often sang it the second time in swing -as early as 1952-and he was the author and composer), nonetheless, it was my buying Bobby Darin's recording that prompted my mother to give her two Trénet albums. When I was almost sixteen, I heard Trénet sing it live, and the next year, heard his 1946 recording. I had bought the Darin recording for what was on the other side-Brecht and Weill's Mack the Knife.

It’s actually amazing how many artists have covered Mack The Knife either in its original morbid form😂, or swinging as in Armstrong and Darin style. I think that most people agree that Darin absolutely nailed that tune, with respect to all of the other legends who gave it a go.

I thought I had had read that some time ago but I think I’m confusing it with a different song. I should have confirmed it and not been so lazy lol I love Bobby Darin’s music. I first discovered him when I bought a 45 of Mack the Knife “ at a garage sale when I was a kid about 9 years old. I loved the song although I didn’t really understand it at the time lol. Yes, he was a performer. He did great imitations and his nightclub act was great. Sadly, he died at 37 but he put his all into everything he did.

My favourite genre for him was swing, but, many will choose folk/country/rock…. he lived on borrowed time and moved too quickly for many to keep up with. He had oxygen tanks side stage, which was a requirement due to his many bouts of childhood rheumatic fever, which severely damaged his heart. George Burns helped Bobby’s career take off and Elvis was quite the fan and supporter of Bobby. He duetted with the likes of Peggy Lee and Judy Garland and was a regular on the iconic Andy Williams Show. He was also friends with legends like Sam Cooke and Mathis as they all performed at venues like the famous Copa.

Bobby Darin was considered to be such a talented performer that even the greats didn't want to come on after him. He had so much charm.
He was big . He was so smooth
He had two TV shows on NBC. The first one was only 7 shows, but that was followed by the BOBBY DARIN SHOW which televised 13 shows. That was in 1973 shortly before he had heart surgery, to repair a valve, from which he never recovered. He made a few movies but the best known is COME SEPTEMBER which also starred Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida and Sandra Dee. He was a huge talent. Sad that he left us so young.
