    I was triyng to capture the pantograph passing some insulators at high speed. The weather was bad and the video wasn't succesful but I catched both the unnoticed faulty guide rod and the short circuit caused by it when I tried to test the other pantograph.

    Note how the pantograph "walks" from side to side across the contact wire as the unit moves down the way. This action is achieved deliberately by displacement of the wire from centerline when it is installed, to promote uniform wear of pantograph heads.

    • @smwca123
      @smwca123 2 года назад +14

      Actually, it works the other way around - the wire sweeps across the pantograph contact bar, by anywhere from 200 mm to 400 mm either side of the track centerline - a parameter called stagger.

    The Romanian Railway has specific orders on faulty pantographs, the main switch (disjunctor has to be disconnected and the faulty pantograph must be isolated). The fact that both the pantographs were enabled (A+B active) and the front one was raised led the 27 kV to energise the malfunctioned pantograph and its loose piece to arc with its action piston or the metallic top cover. The order states clearly to switch off the disjunctor, get down the faulty pantograph (if possible)and then stop the train, inspect the possibility of isolating and lowering it or leave it as low as possible in order not to interfere with the catenary. If not possible, the locomotive is claimed as a major disfunction. If not, in the machine room enable just the front pantograph and start the train again for the first station where the locomotive should be declaired unablr to continue. The electric arc will eventualy distroy the pantograph and melt the catenary wire.

      At 27,000 volts, it doesn't take much current to pull the train. A typical locomotive rated at 1500 HP (1119 kilowatts) will draw only 41.4 amperes at full power. At typical cruise power, the current draw will be roughly one quarter of that or 10-15 amperes.

    • @dominiksuk7261
      @dominiksuk7261 4 года назад +4

      Frank Roberts are you sure 1100kW loco is a typical one? Even 30 years old ones have often max output of over 3000 kW. Modern locos mostly have around 6400 kW, Taurus can give you even over 8000 kW. All these are outputs, so the actual power drain will exceed those numbers.

    • @ShazenVideos
      @ShazenVideos 6 лет назад +7

      The train driver has noticed the faulty pantograph and has tried to lower it down. Since both pantographs are connected and because of the broken/hanging part, the current from the first pantograph short-circuited the lowering mechanism of the pantograph. Because of the way pantographs work, the springs pushed the pantograph up to the catenary again. Since the current from the catenary connected through the loco to the return line (rails) it short-circuited the whole section between two insulators (of which one you can see at the beginning).
