Edward Hopper is one thing but Tatiana Hopper in my books is a brilliant talent as well. Such a topic such beautifully executed in this movie, great job !!
wow thank you so much I really appreciate your words Sunil! Means a lot :)
I have been looking at three books on ed H. ---been in mc donalds one night and made my "Hopper image" what fun !
It is one thing to have a personal vision and quite another to be able to express that vision in a consistent, uniquely recognizable manner - what may be called a 'personal style.' The latter is relatively rare and distinguishes the greats from the rest.
I have studied Edward Hopper's work for some years. I admire his ability to capture a fraction of time on canvas and to do it with a sense of mystery. But I have to admit that I cannot concentrate on his work for very long at a time. It depresses me too much. His characters seem to have a sense of loss and emptiness and not belonging to their present environment . Even his architecture imparts that feeling. Like a structure that has been set down from another dimension and has no relationship to its surroundings. On the other hand, I have always admired Nighthawks. Maybe because he did it in the same year as my birth. Even though it creates the same feeling of emptiness I have always wanted to try to recreate it with my photography. :)
I have shot many street and landscape cityscape photography that mimics Hopper’s style without consciously trying to follow him. I liked Hopper images as i discover his paintings during my visits of museums. My style are saturated colors graphic geometric with strong contrast in my compositions. Thanks for the video.
I won't (I will) comment on the beauty of the video as a whole as so many have already rightly done in the comments. But I will take the time to make sure you know how beautiful your "View From My Hotel Room" picture is. It has a small but certain Hopper sensibility but its your proximity to the plane of the table and how its curves play with the chair curve and the railing lines as they all play with the open expanse behind that is spectacular. Not to mention its perfect palette and that miniscule gap between ocean and railing. Bravo.
I appreciate Hopper even more after this Hopper-on-Hopper treatment. Many thanks! Hopper really is special, isn't he. He's categorized as a realist, but he's so much more than that.
Josephine Hopper said about her husband: "Sometimes talking to Eddie is just like dropping a stone in a well, except that it doesn't thump when it hits bottom."
Thank You. I love Edward Hopper
Thank you so much for your in depth review of Edward Hopper. He is one of my all time favorites. No matter the current fashion or trend in art, Hopper's work never goes out of style.
Thank you for this video! It resonates with my perception that there is a close relationship between photography and Hoppers work. And also that we more often than not connect the inner and the visible world - as Hopper did so masterful. I liked the quote from JW Goethe a lot! A sign that all art, all artists all minds are connected somehow.
All is indeed connected! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, 💯 agree with you :)
Very interesting and thought provoking. Presentation is A+! Thanks!
Thank you for this wonderful interpretation of this great artist.
I always thought he is showing the inside of the outside world and the despair of never really understanding it ....
Very interesting take Reinhold! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for watching :)
One of the best photography/art channels on RUclips. Brilliant! Thanks for your insights and approach.
Thank you for a great educational video,
I want to say how much I liked the animation of the painting
Thank you Yuval, glad you enjoyed the animations :)
I've been falling out of photography for the last year or so (ironically due to pursuing an MA in the subject, I'm continuing it in a different city), and videos like yours help remind me why I got into photography, and what I know deep down I can do with a camera, thank you for your inspirational content
Hello Tatiana. I loved this video, the music you chose, the editing: Excellent work. I immersed myself in the work of Ed Hopper (I had never delved into it) It is beautiful what he did, especially that dreamlike atmosphere that he gave to all the scenes. It's like it gives the feeling of being on another plane of reality, observing this one and capturing it with that signature that hasn't changed over time. PS: I missed the finger snap. But the "Peace..." made up for it.
Ahah thank you so much, really appreciate your thoughtful words and feedback! So glad you enjoyed the video both in content but also in form with the visuals, all the best! ✨
Great video. Thanks. Hopper’s work, which I love, has two main overarching characteristics to me; humility of subjects, and restraint in interpretation by the painter. Simplicity by which he paints the “outer layer” you mentioned allows us to dive quickly and easily into the inner layers. For that reason I always feel peaceful looking at his work, and it’s always a calming experience. I can only hope I can get to that level with photography one day, which by the way you seem to have reached already. The photos you’ve sprinkled in this video are just spectacular.
Thank you for this wonderful installment. Edward Hopper has been an important inspiration for me and I appreciate your thoughtful analysis. I am very much enriched by it!!!
Thank you so much Daniel!
Your cinematography is getting better and better every day. . You insight of the subject you learnt from or inspired from is genuine and brilliant . I have learned a lot today and thank you. .
Hey Ann, thank you so much for watching and for your kind words, glad to know you left with something after the video, that's always been my goal :)
Thanks for the video Tatiana. Art was always my first love, so I really enjoyed this one. I thought you brought out some interesting points about composing for a sense of space, especially as artists (painters) don't have F stops for DOF. Hopper's paintings really do ooze a feeling of isolation and mood as you said. Great choice of music too. Thanks again👍😎
Thank you so much David, glad you shared your opinion and enjoyed this video :)
I remember seeing Nighthawks in Chicago and I love Nighthawks. That painting and pretty much Hopper’s painting pretty much inspired me to do photography.
That’s amazing, Hopper’s work has been a huge inspiration for me too :)
Thank you Tatiana. Very well done and informative. I think Hopper is the painter who offers the greatest influence and inspiration to photographers.
Very true! Thank you for watching 🙌
Thx. Your shows are thought provoking, and alot of fun! :)
Thank you Donald!
Excellent video and explanation of Hopper's work and life.
Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks a lot - I love the paintings from Hopper and your analysis - Greetings from Germany, Satyam
Thank you! Greetings back to Germany:)
Tatiana, many thanks for this one too!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for this hommage to E. Hopper. 😉
One thing that connects all of Hopper's paintings is that they are perfectly true in perspective. I guess this is what, as a photographer, a single prime lens would give you. There is no abstraction in that dimension. So he had the choice of texture (even with luminousity, Hopper remained very conservative) and colour. And, as the images you included in your video show, that's where he excelled. As you pointed out, removing some aspects of the "immediate" perception can make the image timeless - and more impactful. (For lack of a better word)
Brilliant content. You have such a soothing voice. Thanks for your videos that place photography in the fine art world.
Thank you Jim!
Love these videos where you go in depth on an artist!!! So good again!
Thank you ☺️🙌
OMG ! This video is the coolest on Soooo MANY levels. Imagine a review by none other than T. Hopper !, who, herself is an amazing person !!!!
Thank you so much Mario 🙏🏻
Another excellent presentation ... thanks! Music, animated characters and your thoughtful insights all blended into a dreamy story that makes us think about our creative process ... brilliant!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video’s content and format :) appreciate it! ✨
Great post, Tatiana, thanks. :)
Amazing insights here, Tatiana! Hopper is one of favourite painters and I love hearing how others breakdown the message of his works. I did take painting lessons before and I found that the skills you learn from observation applies to many things including photography, I think it’s an important skill to hone for sure
Your videos never disappoint! This one in particular resonated with me. I have always felt the connection between his work and photography. You have the gift of always going several steps deeper and I always walk away inspired! Thanks!!
Thank you so much Tom I really appreciate your insight and I’m really happy the video resonated with you and it was helpful ✨
Amazing lesson. Thank you very much. I find the works of Gregory Crewdson very similar in light and feeling to those of Edward Hopper. Greetings from Brazil.
Yes Crewdson did take inspiration from Hopper from what I read! Cheers for watching and greetings to Brazil!
They had a exhibit of his work at the Virginia museum of find arts in Richmond Virginia USA and alone with his work they showed the work of others the one I like was William Egglestone red ceiling
This was excellent!!
Thank you 😊
Thanks for such an informative and inspiring video Tatiana. I love Hopper’s work, and it has inspired my photography. All the best!
Greatly enjoyed your presentation on Hooper. I have long appreciated his work and your video gave me food for thought on how I can make my own photography by being aware of the concepts he/you introduced. Keep up the excellent work.
glad you touched on the subject that there is always an image to be made
Absolutely Ernest! There’s always an image to be made 🙌
So much effort for a video. Thank you!
Cheers for watching!
Loved this video!
Great video. I love old “Hop”. True master.
Thank you Paul!
Always a pleasure to spend some time listing to you. Always getting some things to think about and meditate. Thank you.
Thank you so much Robert glad the video was helpful to you 🙌
thank you!!! thank you so much for these videos, they are amazing. Lots to learn from them
Thank you Matías!
Such a great and intelligent tutorial. One of the best channels you can come across! Thank you.
Thank you so much! Appreciate it :)
I totally understand what you mean in this episode. I've been on a journey of discovery of my photographic style for a few years and I think I am only now beginning to know what it is. However there's still some way to go before I am satisfied with my work and feel like I have "arrived". The path is not obvious nor easy but very rewarding nonetheless. Thank you for this excellent episode!
I never fail to learn something valuable from your videos. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work! ✌️
Thank you so much 🤍
Great video! Thank you!
Lonesome: Amazing picture ... Thank you for posting ... See you in the next one ... 🙂✌
Glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching! 🙏🏻
Another Beautiful Visual Essay And Exploration Into A Fellow Hopper's Work 🙏🏾
Thank you Noah ✨
Thank you for an excellent essay, so well produced and insightful. As a keen photographer, Hopper's painting technique is an ongoing inspiration to me. With the blocks of light and shade, colour and simplicity, his work is exemplary in it's ability to remove the superfluous and concentrate the viewer on the subject matter. The Precisionist movement in America is my favourite painting form due to it's correlation to photography. Maybe you could produce further essays featuring Charles Demuth, Paul Strand and particularly Charles Sheeler?
I'm definitely going to buy compilation book of Edward Hopper's paintings. Thanks for such instructive, inspirational and beautiful video.
Thank you so much, definitely get one and dive more into his work, it’s worth it :)
Another amazing video.
Thank you Ted!
Very interesting and perceptive commentary Tatiana. I've watched it twice already!
Thank you so much Geoff! Really appreciate it and glad you really liked it 🙌

This was most enjoyable.... Love Hopper's work....
Very nicely presented...
Good choice of music....
Please continue with these analyses... It made my evening special...
Thank You for this Tatiana...
Thank you so much, really appreciate it and will continue my best 🤍
Dear T:
Thank you for this video. I come to art history through photography. I never was interested in art history until I picked up a camera. I enjoyed Hopper’s impressions like interpretation of mostly urban life in the 20th century and more. I LOVE your bringing his work to life with the animations you provided. I am blown away. WOW. Bet Hopper would approve what you have done with his images.
Mask On Nurse Marty
Thank you so much for your comment Martin! Appreciate it and glad you have enjoyed both the video and the paintings :)
Very well done Tatiana, I really enjoyed this.
Thank you Rich ❤️
Thanks for another great video ☝️☝️☝️
Thank you for watching! ✨
Great episode, thanks!
waiting so much for this, and I love it!
Thank you ☺️
Really enjoyed this video Tatiana, especially the timelessness and picture depth sections! Thank you for making this video :)
Thank you so much Sathya, appreciate your words and feedback as always, thank you for watching ✨
Very well done....excellent video and subject 👍👍 and your image of "view from my hotel room" is outstanding; at first glance I thought it was the other Hopper! 😎
Ahah thank you Joseph really appreciate your comment and kind words, glad you enjoyed that image I really do remember thinking about solitude and the not knowing about the future when I took it perhaps the same headspace as some of Hopper’s paintings :)
Great work as always on the video.
Cheers Tarim!
Thank you so much for this inspiring episode !!!
Thank you for watching Robert!
Im liking your videos more and more, probably a combination of your style growing on me and you getting better at making these videos
Thank you so much, appreciate your kindness and thank you for watching :)
Another great video! :)
I like how you used illustrations and themes from the work of a great artist to explain the points you wanted to convey.
Thank you so much Kev! Appreciate it! :)
NO WAY! I know Hopper's work for a year now, but only yesterday went back to see if I can find his book to buy in good condition, crazy timing Tatiana!
Crazy timing indeed! Glad you enjoyed it and the video was very timely :)
This is my favourite of your videos.
Cheers Dale!
Finally, Hopper on Hopper!
🙌
Magnificent video. I inspire many times in painters, when I capture cloudy landscapesm I think in Monet´s paints for example
Beautiful example I love Monet too! ✨
Thank you for this video :)
Enjoyed your presentation and appreciate how much hard work went into creating it. Here and there I disagreed with some of your statements, but your underlying attitude toward exploration is inspiring. Loved your use of the found footage: brilliant!
Thank you so much Marty for your feedback it’s much appreciated ✨
Thanks!
Just discovered your channel and really enjoyed this video, really struck a chord. Looking forward to watching the others. I live in Cumbria, UK...are you in the UK too? Thought I recognised an image of Blackpool. Do you only shoot film and black and white? Anyway keep on posting thoughtful stuff like this.☺
Thank you Tatiana for this excellent video essay. I saw a Jack Vettriano print in a gallery window once (The Drifter) and the person I was with said he must have been influenced by Hopper. I then fell down the Hopper rabbit hole and managed to see the exhibition in London (Tate, 2004?). Fantastic artist… so much going on, often in sparse or even empty scenes.
I wonder if Tom Waits’ Nighthawks at the Diner is a love letter, certainly could be.
Looking forward to ho you exposé next!
Hey Phil thank you so much for your comment, I’m also very familiar with Vetrriano and know the painting you’re talking about, for me it was the other way around I found him via an article on painters influenced by Hopper and I’ve been following his work ever since :)
Both fantastic artists with whom we can definitely learn a whole lot. Thank you for watching 🤍
just a heads up in case you've not seen it, but on BBC4 last Sunday was:
"On Camera: Photographers at the BBC" - A revealing insight into several great modern photographers, drawn from the BBC's archive.
it's available on iPlayer for 28 days
Oh thank you so much for the heads up have to look it up! :)
I am a hobby photographer. I want to let you know that I have been a subscriber and have enjoyed all your presentations. Please stay safe and with my best regards.
Thank you so much for your comment and for subscribing and supporting the channels, I really really appreciate it :)
Awesome! Thank you so much for yet another great video! Just a quick question if I'm allowed: How come you had not done a video on Edward Hopper earlier? (He must be one your favourite artists). Keep up the fantastic work, you are so inspirational and so thoughtful about your content and presentation. All the best to you!
I really enjoyed this video, as Edward Hopper is my favorite American artist! Your animation of those Hopper scenes was mesmerizing - how was that done?! And is there a chance that T. Hopper is related to E. Hopper?? Thank you for this excellent and illuminating work.
Now, only if I could photograph like Lowry used to paint those match-stick people.
Insightful explanation of Edward' Hopper's art and what photographers can learn from it. Thank you so much. Is there a book you could recommend about him? Perhaps the Rolf Renner book as shown in the video
Hey Malcom thank you so much for watching! Also yes I recommend the one I used for this video but I’ve also added a couple more to the video’s description :)
@@TatianaHopper Thank you so much Tatiana for those book recommendations. I like the look of the Rolf Renner book
I've just started reading a book called lonely city and the first chapter focus a lot on how hoppers art is often linked to loneliness and isolation through composition and subject. Despite this hopper didn't like that people associated his work with loneliness as he felt like "it was played out"
That is true! That’s why I said what I said in the video about it being a sort of work that ponders on life and existentialism, he felt his work was reduced all the time to that word and I can see how that can be frustrating! Looking forward to read that book ✨
Nice video! Please tell me music name of intro and end.
Excellent video! Are you related to Edward Hopper?
I’m not :)
A guess that 3D effect in Hoppers paintings is also reinforced by not showing glass in windows !
Very true! 🙌
You are awesome! But I did not get the song you used.
You didn't say you were not related but I'll give you a pass on the nepotism. Seriously though I love this series. All the notes on the sketches are really interesting as people get hung up about "post processing".
Ahaha thank you Edward! Thank you for your words and feedback, appreciate it as always ✨
Off point I know ,I I apologies but have to say it ,"sexy woman "had to say it , can't afford film photography , would love to , own a few old ones
If any modern artist could be said to have had sex regularly with color, it was Edward Hopper. Hopper embraced color. Mr. Hopper must have had access to a camera and B&W film, did he ever shoot B&W?
Any relation? Well, you're as good at photography as he was at painting😊
Maybe spiritually ahah but honestly thank you so much for your kind words Carl!
"Stay true to yourself" doesn't really work, because that is exactly what the marketing machine is telling me to do. Instead, I rather want to stay true to something beyond myself. Possibly something that cannot easily be commodified. Maybe then authenticity is just a consequence of what one does.
You KNOW jasom from Grainy days plays this to sleep
Has GrainyDays seen this yet lol?
8:38 a subliminal message?
Are you related to him?
Nope!
