      Absolutely....and that's part of why it was so great. So honest. The whole extended conversation about drugs was really interesting.
      It seems he was incredibly honest about it here...the struggle with addiction...and all the boring cliches that come with that.
      But also about how he _genuinely_ loves drugs. I mean...you'd have to be pretty sheltered, naive, or intellectually incurious to NOT find drugs, at a bare minimum, interesting. And so often these days, the de facto response to drugs is sanctimonious and tedious. Matty is WAY more honest about all of it. The bad...and good, of all of it. And nothing about "DRUGS" is black and white. It's damn near entirely gray. And Matty knows that....but also knows how tenuous it is to talk about it. But he does so anyway...at least in this interview. And I really respect that. And appreciate it personally. Everything he said makes perfect sense to me.

    As someone around Matty's age....who's also dealt with drug issues in my life....I hugely appreciate how open and HONEST he is about his own life.
    I especially love that he's not one of those ridiculous people who confidently assert that drugs are objectively bad.
    Actually, drugs are....amazing. They're basically the best thing that exists in reality. THAT is why people get hooked. People get addicted....because of how GREAT drugs are, not because of how awful they are. The awful part is running out...or withdrawing...or getting caught...and all the shit that comes with that.

I can't think of many things in life better than that scenario. But.... withdrawal is so SO excruciating, that the constant fear of knowing that reckoning will eventually come...makes it very hard to enjoy the good parts for too long. I still shudder when I remember the aching gnawing excruciating discomfort in my limbs and stomach. @Malte Laurids Brigge if we were throwing our cars into the fucking ocean, then yeah I'd rather them decompose than continue to poison our planet. The idea is that since the CD's are by no means inherently necessary to the enjoyment of the music, what with streaming/virtual storage being easily accessible, what's the point in a product that lasts longer than it needs to. Now, that being said, that's only for the purpose of recording physical sales, so I understand why it seems convoluted to not just bypass a physical medium altogether, I think you're being obtuse so as to miss the point of creating less harmful versions of the products we are continuing to produce even as they often get simply discarded and pollute our planet for years.

    This is one of my favorite Matty interviews.....and I come back to it often.
    He's very smart....very aware...and very existential in how he thinks. He's ALSO very charming and charismatic and outgoing and down for a laugh.
    But not here. In this....he's hungover, or high, or tired, or all three. And he's just kinda....talking. And I love it. Because I've so been there. Hell, I'm kinda there tonight, right now. Tomorrow I'll be all bright eyed and bushy tailed....ready for the day. But right now? I'm a bit.....mired in my own mind.
    And I really appreciate Matty for being so honest about wherever he's at....at any given moment. He doesn't BS....he just is who he is at that time.
    There's plenty of interviews where he's got the charisma and charm turned up to 11. He knows how to do that.
    But this interview....is not that. And I love it for that reason. It's honest.

Music is all about the journey, and to be able to see the evolution of an artist that comes out of an addiction, and how it affects the music, it’s baffling.

    I actually think dan reynolds has the biggest heart ever and has always fought and will always fight for the lgbtq community, he does charity concerts if I'm not mistaken. who else in the music industry that does that? I think those real actions are waaay more impactful than protest song (is that what you call it?) he's a good dad if not great, he has struggled with his marriage and his physical health, and he openly stated that he also struggled with depression and seeing him to this day with so much positivity is making me feel awful for complaining about my life. correct me if I'm wrong though

    I fail to see how your popularity = responsibility to do good. I get its his opinion, and I don't care for Imagine Dragons very much, but the artist should only speak of things that speak to them. Even if they don't produce anything super creative, that doesn't mean they aren't artists. Perhaps Imagine Dragons don't care about influencing others and I agree it would be a shame if they choose not to do something good in the world with their name, but it's not like its the artist's duty to do that to begin with.

    Though I love the 1975 songs, I think it's quite absurd for Matty to make such comments based on a lyric of one song. He doesn't seem to know much about what Imagine Dragons stand for. Dan Reynolds and the rest of the boys are doing so much to use their platform for good causes like TRL, Love Loud and more. They work tirelessly to produce amazing music that inspires people while promoting their advocacies to support mental health awareness and lgbtqia community. Just because ID's music are mainstream doesn't mean their music doesn't have meaning. Most of their songs are about battling depression and spreading love and empowerment. Their music connected to the masses for a reason. I appreciate Matty for being honest with his opinion but I don't know man... I just expected more of him y'know. But hey... that's just me.

    Dan does a lot for his community. Go watch his documentary and you will see. A simple lyric can mean a lot based off of the emotion it creates. Not every song has to be a protest. You gonna hate on the Beatles for making simple music too? “Come together” - very simple yet effective. But also - they asked this guy a question in the middle of a set. He is giving it all - in a vulnerable state. Won’t be surprised if these guys collaborate down the road.

    I hate how people think just because imagine dragons' music is different from the 1975's its bad. no one should be criticized for the music they like. dan didn't say a thing about Matty and Matty went on twitter and said "my music is amazing and meaningful and imagine dragons' is shit." that's his opinion but its not right to use your platform to spread that message. that's what dan and all of us defending dan are saying. dan does so, so much good. but no one sees that, they hear two overplayed songs and think they know everything. educate yourself before you jump to conclusions and immediately defend someone, even if they were your idol. Matty was in the wrong. and that's coming from someone that likes both bands genuinely

    • @LockhardtGames
      @LockhardtGames 5 лет назад +2

      It's not that deep, he just openly said that their music is meaninglessness and stupid, which is quite true. It doesn't matter what the Imagine Dragons guys does outside of his music because at the end of the day, it's all a bunch of bullshit marketing. As long as his music objectively sucks, of course I have (and anyone else has) the right to say so.

    • @trumanslack
      @trumanslack 5 лет назад +4

      Filip P i’m not saying you don’t have the right, of course you do. this comment wasn’t even so much directed toward matty. i just think there’s a lot of hatred toward both bands in this comment section. plus, whether or not music is good is an opinion, and at the end of the day everyone feels differently. all i’m saying is we should accept that and move on, show some compassion for each other instead of fighting about which band is better. everyone likes what they like :)

      @@LockhardtGames their music is anything but meaningless. dan himself has dealt with depression all his life. at every concert he gives a big speech about his own struggles. a lot of their music that ISN'T on the radio talks a lot about it. if you don't believe me, listen to the album smoke + mirrors. their music has a lot of meaning, just not very many people know it bc only certain songs get radio play. i love matty and his music but he was definitely in the wrong here by saying their music is "meaningless" without having actually listened to any of their other songs

    I’ve been saying for a long time that if you’re someone Who is privileged enough to have people listen when you speak, then you should use your message to invoke a positive change in others or spread one about love. don’t spread hate and don’t try to divide one another because that’s not solving any problems.

  • @joelhorton581

    I understand his point that artists should use their platform for a positive purpose and I agree with that to an extent, but if I was a successful musician and I don’t want to make a song about climate change or similar then I won’t. I think everyone can agree that music gives people freedom, and it’s a bit hypocritical that artists should now be expected by so many people to use music in such a way. If I want to write an album about getting pissed up in a field then I should be able to.... because I want to..... freedom?

But do you think that just because matty healy told them to make more meaningful songs they are going to do it? no. He's not changing anything with this and he knows that so I don't see the point of mocking them like that. He's focusing on an unproblematic band instead of the whole music industry. If he wants to see a change he should focus on his craft and try to inspire other artists with it, like many great bands/artists have done in the past and keep on doing. “He probably did that because of you” that’s a profound lack of understanding of what Dan Reynolds is doing. While I’m not such a huge fan of his music, I contribute to his streams because the annual LGBT fundraiser and music festival that Dan Reynolds has organized in Utah over the past 3 years. I listen to Imagine Dragons because Dan Reynolds has become one of the biggest LGBT allies in the western United States, donates constantly to our causes and speaks out *against his own church and family* about the fact that people like me deserve fair treatment and equality. Its massive what he’s done as far as helping us LGBT people trapped in strict religious cultures that keep us silenced. Marty Healy is cool and all, but literally none of the contributions Dan Reynolds has given has had even an iota of cause from him or his opinions.

      I feel like Matty just wanna throw shade at another band... don't wanna be rude but i don't think the 1975 has ever or will ever be as "mainstream" as Imagine Dragons. The 1975 is more of a "cultfandom", where there's a certain group of people who is very intense about the band. Maybe Imagine Dragons has more bland, same sounding songs but let's be real, i went to one of their show two days ago and 100,000 persons showed up... could the same really happened for The 1975?? They're mostly known in the UK & USA, their music isn't for everybody, but in both cases, i love them. Matty should take his own advice and take his platform to spread great messages, like positivity and just shut up if you have nothing great or helpful to say
