  • DDDN | 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean, warning of tsunami that could be nearly 3 meters high in Cuba
At 6:30 p.m. on February 8 (local time), a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in the Caribbean Sea, more than 200 km from the city of George Town on the Cayman Islands. The earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of more than 9 km. It was the region's largest earthquake since 2021, when a 7.2-magnitude quake hit Haiti. The earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami, with dangerous waves likely to appear within nearly 1,000 km of the epicenter. Warnings show waves could be nearly 3 meters high in Cuba and one meter in Honduras and the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands government has issued a warning asking people in coastal areas to move to the mainland. Although tsunami warnings were issued for dozens of Caribbean countries, they were later lifted. Currently, there is no information about damage or casualties caused by the earthquake.
