Let's see if I've got this straight .. your buddy's boat is leaking hydraulic steering fluid, has trolling motor steering problems, AND engine problems? I think he needs to bite the bullet and put that boat in the shop for much needed repairs.. I've spent most of my 77 years on and around boats ...nothing worries me more than getting strended on the water miles from help..

I grew up in the early 70' in the Florida Keys and I remember that we didn't fish so much but we did a lot of diving on the reefs
