Twisted Truck 2.0 Rollover Semi!!! The Job From...a Really Bad Place

  • Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Let me start by saying that I did NOT like this job!!! Looking back on it, I know I could have approached it different ways, however, the end result was success. The way it was, left me tense, even while editing the video. I don't know what caused the driver to go off the road, but when he did, the load shifted inside the trailer and rolled the trailer onto its side. As you will see the truck is quite twisted and the whole things gives us trouble throughout the entire job. Setting the trailer back on its wheels was actually the easiest part of this job. Keeping it from rolling back over, that's another story. We have the entire crew, yes, even Talon, and all our equipment out on this job....our Peterbilt with Miller Industries 1150R rotator, the Western Star Vulcan V70, the Peterbilt 337 Century 4024, the Peterbilt 587 road tractor with our Trail-Eze TE801 ramp (float) trailer, the traffic control unit 16 Dodge Ram 1500, both rollbacks, pallet jacks, and even our Takeuchi TL12 track loader (skid steer). The trailer was loaded with 44,000 lbs of copy paper, was low center of gravity, and shifted hard to the passenger side, which created quite the challenge for us. Yes, again, I know there were other methods I could have used and if/when I get another job like this I WILL approach it differently than this. I am open to positive suggestions, but NOT rude criticism. I am not perfect and have never claimed to be. I put this video out for several reasons, one of which was to seek possible alternatives from my viewers...NOT KEYBOARD QUARTERBACKS. Positive suggestions only please!! Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

Ethan is in a tough spot. Being the next apparently in line is hard - just look at all the Jr's. around the world. If he is a hard charger he is just sucking up in his coworkers eyes. Too laid back is just as bad. Talon has his father's eye so it's natural to compare his attitude and work ethic to Ethen - and that's not fair as Talon has years of experience on Ethen. He doesn't know what to do and is probably scared to make mistakes- so it seems like he is always waiting for his Dad to tell him what to do. So it's tough.

Hi Ron, This was a tricky shift.
I just wish that you were able to shut the road completely to extract this truck safely. Pretty standard ops in Oz for this type of move.
I didn't realise that your section of highway was a sleepy hollow area (driver falling asleep). One of the hazards of road transport, especially between 12:00 & 6:00 am.
Sleep debt is a real thing and many factors can cause this type of accident.

As you asked for other possible ways to do this, the only other alternative i can think of is to possition the rotator further forwards. Then using the crane to secure the back as you did, but preparere for adding an aditonal line, where the westernstar ended up adding its line ower the trailer. For the downwards pull the rotator could uppright the middle of the trailer with the front outriggers, enabeling the westernstar to come in from behind pulling down the back. Once uppright the westernstar can pull it all back while the rotator follows allong and stabilises it all sideways with two lines ower the trailer and if nessesary an other one pulling down from the back outrigger. As a disclaimer this is just what i think, and i am not an towtruck operator, so take this with a big grain of salt :)

How was it possible to drive it far with the load shifted so much?..You answered my question in the follow up. As a former Logistics manager you did a great job and safely as usual. Internal load shifts are often much more dangerous than folks realize even after getting the truck drivable as this video points out.

Never having worked a recovery of this magnitude I can offer very little critique of the methods you chose. You assessed, created a plan and worked your methods within the plan. The one thing that might have helped stabilize the trailer would have been lifting the right side trailer wheels high enough to place timbers under them to tilt the trailer to the left past vertical. Or an air bag to hols it upright. But what you did worked and that is what counts. Great recovery from a very difficult position.

  • @Samanthareneeheart1
    @Samanthareneeheart1 2 года назад +3

Ok you asked for input here's my 2 cents worth: one I probably would have tail wrapped the trailer with BOTH main lines on it and instead of the small blue endless loop sling you used I'd probably have gone for the wide 20 foot strap.. Only I'd have the rotator on the drives and Talaon with the western star on the trailer. Maybe even have the Western Star face the wrong way just a short highway shut down while you all did that. Again just my ideas & yes 2 rotators would have been nice, but how many jobs do you do that requires 2 & both would need to stay close to home for that reason.

As I was watching the cars going by at a good clip, I was wondering if the cop was out of his car motioning for them to slow down. I don't think a lot of drivers know what slow down, move over means. I was truly concerned for all of you. Good job to all of the Mid-West crew.

    • @andrep8287
      @andrep8287 Год назад +1

@ Roy Ordway.....I agree with you that the traffic was moving far too fast through the recovery area!
However, I believe that - depending on the jurisdiction - when the recovery crew supplies its own "Traffic Control" crew on these long-winded recoveries, the local cop-shop withdraws its own officers, as they can be used elsewhere.
I can accept this arrangement; the problem is that the general attitude of drivers (both private as well as commercial vehicle) won't slow down if they don't see a cop-car or two parked on the shoulder, as it's basically akin to work-zones....
It's a well-known fact that few drivers actually do slow down to just below the posted work-zone speed-limit in general and when workmen are around, in particular.
My penalty-suggestion for anyone found speeding through a work-zone (active) and/or live-recovery site should be to spend 24-hours as a "human orange/black cone" which are used to separate the live-lanes with the work-zone. Dress the offenders in "Depends", put them in hand & foot-cuffs, slide the cone over their head and position them at the beginning of the work-zone......"enjoy, we'll pick you up tomorrow, same time" (if the offender survives, I guarantee you they wont' ever reoffend again.....on the other hand, if they don't survive (heart attack or being hit by another speeder, good riddance! (btw....I'm really not kidding).

Great video, Ron! The way you are so "nimble" on the job is impressive! I know it's because you have to be, but it is still impressive. Do you ever review these jobs with your team for training or improvement purposes? Similar to a coach reviewing "tapes" with his team, I think it would be good for all the team players to see themselves in action which may identify areas of improvement. Most of the guys on this job knew almost instictively what to do - due mostly in part to the training you have given them as well as experience on the job - while a couple seemed to need more instruction and more often. The 'tape" would let the team members see where they can improve through critical analysis as well as provide an opportunity for praise in work well performed. Again, great video. Glad it worked out well for you and all are safe! God bless!

Good job guys. It was good to see Talon on a job. It was good to see how you got the job done with 1 rotator, 1 heavy tow and 1 medium duty. It definitely would be nice to have 2 rotators but the way you did it still =10. Might be time to get the M100…😊

So, blown out side on the trailer, bent frame on the truck, and you had me on the edge of my seat the entire recovery. I was willing to bet when you opened the trailer doors all the pallets would be tipped over with the top of the load leaning against the side. Could not help but wonder why you didn't turn Tater around and snatch the trailer up and onto the road but do understand how unstable it was. Also wanted to see a photo of the tractor with the trailer off to see if the drive wheels all sat on the ground LOL. Great job Ron and wonderful to see Talon working outside.

I saw your comment last night before bed about constructive criticism and suggestions. Here’s a couple of thoughts I have about this job after only watching the first third.
    1) You never opened the doors to check condition of the payload to know where your likely center of gravity would be. You only found out once the trailer was upright and bulging.
    2) The centerline of your boom was right at the back of the trailer. As the trailer is picked and swung towards your rig, the centerline of your boom slowly falls behind the trailer, hence you begin to lose your greatest point of leverage at the top corner of the trailer. Had most of the payload remained low, this would have been okay. But now with the bulge, your center of gravity has shifted, and the majority of your lift is on the blue strap line which quickly became precarious. However, when the strap slipped, the truck was mostly upright at the rear. Lucky?
    3) When the truck initially came to rest, which we can assume was fairly abrupt, the payload would have shifted forward and then to the side as it laid over. From what I can gather from your inquiry to the driver, was that it was palletized copy paper at 44k lbs. Was it a full load of 26 pallets? Paper is extremely heavy in bulk loads. If the trailer was half full, you could have been solely picking the empty end of the trailer and it could have easily split open like a tin can in the middle.
    4) Lastly is just a leadership observation. Some of your team understands their role on the job site. The problem here is some. Everyone should understand what is needed even if they don’t get to push the buttons. Everyone should also know the equipment, where things are on the rigs and how to use them. You shouldn’t have to direct others and tell them where to find things.
Keep up the good work. I love your content.

I watched another towing company doing a rolled over car hauling trailer with a Ford 1 ton pick up still attached and on it's side. They did not do a low pull. Nor did they use anything more than the size chain than what is used as a break away chain on a small single axel trailer. When they rolled the trailer and pick up, it came down hard. There was a second pickup. There they used the snatch block that was way smaller than your smallest one. Then they didn't chalk any of the wheels, so it slid rather than roll. They sure made you guys look like professionals. Even when things don't work well for you guys, it still is better than what those other guys were doing!!!

Hey Ron here is another method to do. Have the tator in the slow lane further forward then have a main line on each of the passenger corners and an aux line to the wheels on the trailer and rear frame of the truck. Then use the WS to pull from the front. This would allow you to grab the trailer then support it while being able to side pull on it using the tator. Another option on top of this would be to side pull the rear frame of the truck with the WS and front pull with the lil pete.

Great job Ron. The only thing I can see that would have helped you would have been to have your truck facing away from the wreck so you could have worked of the rear of the truck and picked it up and set it down in the road. All in all great job 👍.

You said it yourself a few times in the vid. A second rotator was the only thing I see you could have done differently. Great work and stay safe brother.

Good to see Talon back on a recovery. He was well train and fell right back into recovery as if he was doing it every day.
You had asked about other ways to do this job earlier. Only thing I would suggest would have been to hold the back if the trailer with a heavy beside the rotator and moved it toward the nose of the trailer to get that on the flat surface of the shoulder sooner.
I can see where unloading on the side of the road as being a no go-that lean with traffic concerns would be a tough call for general safety.
You mentioned a second rotator several times, but you did the job well, it just took a while. If a total road shut down would have been required, then probably would have needed to reach out to another company with a rotator. Not ideal but I know there is one about 40 miles south of that scene.

Well, in asking for comments for "what could have been" ya opened a can of worms. My thoughts have a few different ways to go.
First thing I woulda done different is a slight change of rigging that would have made things a bit easier in the long run by keeping the blue line accessible. Hook it into one of your hard points on the back of the tator and leave her on free spool, easy enough to winch it back in, and in a pinch it can also be used to brace the boom and keep side stress off the assembly.
Second thing, that blue loop was a champ for holding on like it did, but to quote a master of recoveries, "overrigging is underrated" (Ron Pratt). Best bet would have been to use one of the wide straps, angle aluminum to spread it across the corner, and shackle and chain to hook to the trailer frame. 10 times the security.
Third thing, totally could have handled that roll with the auxiliary winches (1 low, 1 for strap)
Fourth thing, angling the tator into place rather than parking as close as you started from, probably would have saved yourself about 4 mini heart attacks from almost seeing a DOT bumper tear up your rim and tire, I know it's an armchair quarterback response, but I've always been more cautious. If you hit capacity on the lift, can always move a bit closer.
Fifth and final thought, sometimes ya gotta go backwards to go forwards. After the roll, if you had picked the trailer and swung it back further into the ditch, without the one set of wheels up on the road way, you could have hit a stable point to set it down and get repositioned and re rigged to lift it back up onto the roadway. From that stable point, could have either gone to lift the front up to the road, or low hooked and held it while the Vulcan or Lil' Pete pulled it up.
My thoughts aside, great job by yourself and the whole crew on a nightmare job. It didn't go as easy as planned but you upheld the tradition.
    Improvise
    Adapt
    Overcome.

Thank you, these are the kind of suggestions I was looking for. Well thought and explained. I especially liked the suggestion of leaving the blue line down where it was accessible. Normally, I would have been using it and for some reason, I didn't think about needing it at the time. Again, hindsight.... You brought up some plausible ideas and gave them in a respectful manner, which is greatly appreciated. Thanks again and God bless.

A long roll-over video with all hands on deck including Talon. A full package video.
Nobody was hurt, no equipment was damaged. Despite the difficulties, a good & safe recovery.
I was wondering why you didn't have a 2nd top strap like you've done on other roll-over jobs. Anchored towards the nose of the trailer and connected to one of the auxiliary winches on the Rotator.
Since the load shifted forward and to the right, that seems like it would have worked better to prevent it rolling back over til all wheels were back on pavement.
