  • Through following different costumers and general being on the internet, I have stumbled upon the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). The SCA defines itself as "an inclusive community pursuing research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture. The lives of participants are enriched as we gain knowledge of history through activities, demonstrations, and events."
Also according to their website "the SCA community includes over 30,000 members in 20 kingdoms around the globe. Our participants learn about the arts, skills, and culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance in an atmosphere of fun, through tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, classes, hands-on workshops, and more."
I researched my local group, attended a few meetings, and decided that this sounded like a lot of fun!! The 1st event that my husband and I attended was the Spring Crown List Tournament Kingdom Arts and Sciences Competition for the Kingdom of Meridies. Do to our work schedule we were not able to make it to the site for the Arts and Sciences Competition, but I am excited for the next one. We did get to witness a feast, a ball, court, and the crown tournament. We have a wonderful time and decided to become official members.

That looked so interesting and I was surprised that they had Native Indigenous foods. I'm Lakota and there is a big emphasis on those types of foods because of the high rates of diabetes in Native communities. I have lots of food allergies to wheat and grain so I can see why it's important.

My husband and I attended an SCA event in Germany, it was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately where we live now, its a 3-hour or more drive 1 way to attend. They had a travling show come through here just before Covid, they haven't come back yet, but I'm hoping they will next year. I'm glad you enjoyed your first event, and the King was right, you guys are a very cute couple.

Greetings from the Kingdom of the Outlands (Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and a small portion of Texas). Just wanted to make a small addendum to your bit about the Peerages - There are 4 Peerages in total; Chivalry, Laurel, Pelican, and Defense. Order of Defense is the newest Peerage to be created within the Society and is only 8 1/2 years old. The Defense is bestowed upon those fighters who take up the martial arms of Fencing and Cut & Thrust combat. Cheers!!!

Hello from the Kingdom of An Tir. What a fun event to attend as a new comer.
I was introduced to the SCA a few decades ago and that was how I first got into historical sewing, mainly Italian Ren. I lost touch for a long time and only recently started attending events again. The one thing that remains constant between when I first attended events and now is how welcoming and friendly folks are. Not to mention passionate/geeky about all things historical. I'm currently learning how to use a lucet, which I bought from a wood carver at an event. The SCA really does offer something for everyone, from fighting to weaving, from illuminated manuscript writing to brewing mead.

      Greetings!!
That's wonderful! I have felt so welcomed into the community. My husband and I are still working on our SCA Names, but we think we're going to plant ourselves in 1066-1150 France as Normans for our impression. I'm very excited to start researching creating the garb. I also think I'm going to have to get into weaving. I also think I might take up archery? My husband is already getting into the heavy fighting. There is just so much it is so wonderful. It truly does offer something for everyone.
