He is using a disc break bike, because Cannondale is sponsoring him with a LAB edition Supersix. It's quite simple. If Cannondale made the same bike with rim breaks, he'd be using that, but they aren't, so there you go.

So let me get Ollie's contradiction straight....the extra dead weight of the disc brakes does not matter because it only slows you down by 0.9 seconds per 100 grams, but weight is everything because the race is typically won by one or two seconds, so the bike is then fitted with the most awesome tubs to reduce weight added by the dic brakes LOL.
yep, my thoughts exactly. I do think there may be a point on it being more rigid because of the thru axles, so it is more efficient at transmitting power, but I'm not an expert to call that out
Rim brakes can be aero, and the weight savings matter more for less powerful people, right? And even for Feather, it doesn’t seem that rim brakes would have made him slower. His bike sponsor also gave him a disc brake bike.
Yeah, Feather’s victory is less “disc brakes are good for uphill” and more “Feather won while riding a disc brake bike _given to him_ to ride” …he was going to win regardless of what he was riding

I guess you can make a rim brake bike SLIGHTY lighter but it's a very small percentage of the weight of bike and rider. Other issues could be disc brake rub but you can set them up with more clearance. You can also technically make a disc brake wheel rim stiffer, more aero and lighter.
#ASKGCN First, thanks for a great show I am an avid fan and follower of everything published through GCN, GCN Tech and GCN+. As a recent settler to the US Chicagoland area from Belgium I found it much more difficult to cycle throughout the year. So, as I head into another Chicagoland winter in 2023 I have decided to invest in a Smart Trainer so that I can ride yearlong, and have been on my first few test rides and am enjoying the structure of Intervals and zone specific training. I can feel the difference, even though it has only been a few short weeks. The virtual reality of riding routes around the world is also fun. The question I have is about hard sprints and out of the saddle hill climbs. I am concerned that the forces on the bike clamped into a smart trainer are markedly different than when riding on the road. What are the risks of me doing real damage to my frame? I have an older aluminium frame bike, KTM Astrada 2008. Thanks again, WayneT
Low risk as long as you aren't trying to throw it side to side as you might on the road. You could always invest in or build a rocker plate for under it, which would help.

GCN says disc brakes are faster going up hill despite being heavier, less aero, and braking not used going up hill. GCN has jumped the shark and can't be taken seriously.
At least do some research before you spout your nonsense. There are so many wind tunnel data sets showing discs (in the correct position) are more aero than rim brake (even behind the fork).
