Grew up in Northern Ireland listening to SLF, a bright light during very dark days. Jake tells the story that they were really struggling with this song and just couldn't get the timings correct at all. By this point, Henry Cluney (the other guitarist) was so fed up that he started playing at twice the speed. The rest of the band just looked at each other, picked up their instruments and joined in and it all clicked into place!. As an aside, the next "who did it better" should be Just Like Heaven, comparing the original Cure version with the far superior Dinosaur Jr version!
Kia Ora hello my friends I'm laying down and listening to this again both versions just make me happy so I'm back for more with a nice talk in-between 👍👏👏👏
I can't imagine life without REGGAE/SKA some of my favourite PUNKROCK wouldn't be what it is without that offbeat JAMAICA 👏👏👏👍✌️ THANK YOU ❤️ REBEL MUSIC
“To protect the afflicted and keep them from wrong” is sung in both versions. Like “Police and Thieves” I think it is churlish to try and choose the best between the punk and the original roots version and I think they really complement each other!

This is an original Bunny Wailer song, he wrote it in 1978. For me I have to admit I prefer the 'SLF' version. Please can you do, 'Hard To Handle' by 'Otis Redding' and 'The Black Crowes' in a future edition?
It's frustraing when sources give just the rerelease dates as it can lead to a lot of confusion. Although Bunny is my least favourite of the Wailers when it comes to song writing, I really do like this. I can't really choose as both versions are excellent.
SLF for me on this one. Would be nice with a comparison of Stiff Little Fingers and Entombed playing State of emergency (S.L.F. did the original) and/or Roky Erickson v/s Entombed - Night of the Vampire
I love the fact that The Fingers, sound like they're in an old mill with bad acoustics, it gives it a great live feeling. I'm sitting in the fence with this one

I worship at the temple of SLF usually , any band that has Suspect Device and Gotta Get Away on their resume cannot be questioned …. I’ve never heard of this track before and in my opinion it sounds slightly jarring hearing their version as opposed to BW version . I do t pretend to be clued up on BW career . But the simple question is like asking “ who does the best single malt whiskey ? Speyside or the Islay ? “ .. we’ll they both have notes that appeal to some but at the end of the day there is no definitive answer, so I’ll say BW as he’s the better exponent of Reggae in general 👍🏴

You are a next level SLF guy and I tug my forelock in submission 🤣… I was in awe of the band back in the late 70’s as what they were singing about wasn’t just punk and anarchy etc … what they were singing about literally put themselves in the crosshairs and risked beatings and shootings , both sides in those days didn’t fk around and to stand up and say NO really did put you at risk . SLF also did a cover of The Wailing Soul's "Mr Fire Coal Man"
It's Bunny Whalers birthday today so here i am Listening to the man who wrote my second favourite song ever after The Clashs COMPLETE CONTROL
The SLF version had a huge impact on me as a 15 year old. You never forget a song like that.

Jake Burns is my 2ic in the male vocals world and his vocal delivery at the end of the song is FEROCIOUS
Simply love Alternative Ulster by Stiff Little Fingers
Anything by SLF. Definitely one of my all time favourite punk bands. Jake Burns is one of the greatest singer, songwriters of ever.
First time hearing the original, didn't realise SLF changed the lyrics so much. I'm a big fan of punk reggae so for me it's a landslide win for SLF

Bunny Whaler is STYLE look at that wonderful man 🧐✊✌️
Bunny Wailer was original author and released it in 1978. SLF does a killer version. Always curious what Jah B thought of it.

SLF all the way...my most favourite SLF song of ever. And it's an older Bunny Wailer song, who did it first. any good punk rocker knows that.

Don't really like the synth on Bunny's version & can't beat the energy on the SLF ..They get my vote 🗳.
