  • I finally got my hands on an old school Case Trapper with Yellow Synthetic handle and Carbon Steel. I got this from Amazon and thought it was CV (Chrome Vanadium) Steel as that was how it was listed but it turned out to be Carbon Steel. So I wont put an Amazon link to it.

I think you made a great choice, buddy. The yellow Case trapper is one of my top three favorite knives out of my whole collection. 👍Mine has a 2014 tang stamp and CV steel blades. And basically from everything I gather, the CV steel from Case was pretty much 1085 carbon. This year they switched from CV to CS, which I've heard is 1095 carbon. IMO, both are awesome. The large stockman I got last week has CS steel, and to me it holds an edge and sharpens about the same as the old CV. Enjoy carrying that knife, my friend! Cheers!

I'm loving it so far! I wanted the CV and the listing said CV, but it ended up being CS. It's ok tho because it gave me an excuse to get another one to get the CV. One in each steel. 😆

I do like the Trapper and Sodbuster patterns. There's definitely more on my list. 😆

Apparently Case switched from CV to CS because of supply issues. Both are quality old school carbon steels. I find it performs better than the SS (tru-sharp). I had occasional sharpening issues with the SS, like edge roll and stubborn burrs but the carbon steel was easier to sharpen to razor sharp. I like the patina you get on the carbon too. According to cutting tests the carbon steel performs a little better. Nothing wrong with the SS for those who don’t want a patina though. The trapper pattern is what Case does best apparently looking at the ones I have. For daily cutting chores I favor the carbon steel in the budget priced models. One advantage of carbon steel is that the scratches can be buffed off easier and concealed with patina. Just cut up some apples and you’ll get a patina.

That is what I have heard of why they switched. I like the look when they patina, I think the CV patinas faster than the CS, at least with the few I have. I only have one trapper with SS and haven't tried sharpening it yet. Thanks for checking the video out!!!

Hows that cs holding up? Last summer I bought a mini copper lock in cs. In 2 weeks in my pocket the blade literally rusted and the ends turned kinda purplish.

Its holding up good . I haven't used it a ton. The blade is starting to get a nice patina. Thanks for checking the video out!
