Awesome to see this finally get a review! I saw it on the list a few weeks ago and have been excited to hear your thoughts on it ever since. Virginia Distillery Co really are an awesome company. Proud to see them show up on here. :)
Once again I’m not a whisky drinker but can’t stop watching these guys. I may have to try whisky at some point, it amazes me the scents they get from smelling it. I don’t like the smell or taste of any alcohol, but I’m probably just doing it wrong.
Your probably not doing it wrong. At first all you get is probably alcohol burn bc its a poison and you body doesn't like poisons lol. But the more you have if the burn goes away and the flavor takes its place. It kinda happens all at once too. I wouldn't recommend taking shots id do small sips. One day, usually less than a month, all of the sudden the burn will be gone and the flavors will blow you away. You should join the Facebook group. There alot of good info and opinions there but there are some bad ones too lol. And they have a video about how to nose and taste whiskey i think. Modernrogue has one with them too i think.
it was posted today. the date is under the video. when it was shot is another story. I'm guessing near the end of last week maybe Friday to allow for editing. so I'm guessing her birthday was last Saturday
Virginia whisk(e)y represent!! Virginia Distillery is doing really cool things and their trio release is excellent! They are each very distinct but all share the same great creamy mouthfeel, the Cuvée cask edition is my favorite!
Virginia represent! I don’t know how widely available they are, but I see Virginia Whisky minis at VABC stores at very reasonable prices! Nice to be able to sample somewhat pricey bottles.
They’re so reasonably priced, it’s actually significantly cheaper to buy 750ml worth of minis rather than a single 750ml bottle. Recommend buying plenty before they figure that out lol
Love Virginia Distillery! Great group of people. They are doing some really cool experiments right now. Definitely take the tour if you are ever up that way. Beautiful distillery!
These guys are local to me, love that I’ve got such a high quality distillery nearby. I get more of a chocolatey note mixed in with the fruit.., almost like a raspberry dark chocolate with that velvety mouthfeel. As far as comps, I’d say the closest I’ve had to the flavor profile is The Macallan 12. Only VDC is hands down a better whisky. Crazy to think given the significantly more advanced age of the Macallan (both the distillery and the whisky).
I'm drinking the C&C right now, and Macallan is a great comparison! And I agree the VDC is better. Really exciting having something this good made in Virginia.
@@cnkirch1215 I got a bottle of the PX Sherry cask strength! Cuvée wasn’t available when I was ordering, but I do recall it being my favorite of the three finishes when I tried them all last year.
Hello, I am the 1k person to like their video. You don't care, but man did 999 look so tempting to tip over. Like a cat tipping over the remote from the end table. Anyways, trying C&C right now. As a Virginian I'm quite excited for the future of Virginia Distillery!
Hope Rex and his wife had a lovely time for her birthday... possibly away from the kids briefly. Nancy Fraley is doing wonderful things in the whiskey world, I only hope I get to try some of her stuff someday... hell I might have already and don't even know it! I seem to remember Daniel had a string of enjoyable bottles that he realized Nancy Fraley had a hand in producing. No idea what video that was, likely it was well over a year ago. O_O
Their Virginia Highland, Cider Cask, is a really good whisky. Scotch Highland whisky [unknown distillery], finished in Virginia cider casks. Delightful!
Hey Daniel and Rex, (or merged together : Drex!? 🤔) Can you make a review on the Laphroaig 1815 Legacy Edition? I would be really curious to hear how would it compare to the LORE? Also, When does a joke turns into a dad joke? When it becomes a parent. ....I will see myself out.... Slainte! 🥃 Ps: Happy Birthday to Rex's wife!
The cuts question, is that why some whiskeys smells like isopropyl alcohol instead of a more pure vodka esque smell? The cuts and or mixes were not done in a way that'd prevent that?
Just had a chance to try this and use your notes to help see what I was finding in it. When you talk about black pepper at the end, is that more of a flavor or feel/tingle?
Ok legit question-those whiskeys with the heads and tails included, is that the stuff that can “make you go blind”? I have heard so many different myths around distilling and blindness. Is it possible to do damage on commercially available whiskey???
I just want to point out, Rex wandered away from the table, Rex tried to bring the whiskey nerd knowledge (I said tried, ok?) Is it possible that in his weakened state Rex is turning to the Somme side of the Farce?
You know this has been a real thorn in my side as a guy that produces my own is trying to match commercial bourbon profiles with just a little bit of cleaning up... There's no way Jim beam makers all the major brands are making tight heart cuts there's just no way. The acetone and nail polish remover on the nose is undeniable
Additionally I'm almost positive that most single malt scotch whiskeys and blended expressions are using cuts that go much deeper into the tails. How deep I'm not sure but I would assume that most Isla Scotch is go down to 30% before they cut it out probably eliminating the cloudy section that happens right before the Sweetwater hits I don't know
YOUR PRESENT LACK OF ENERGY IS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE NEVER-ENDING TORMENTS THAT AWAIT YOU, REX! FOR YOU HAVE DISPLEASED THE COSMIC BUNGHOLE WITH YOUR NEGLECT!
On “cuts” I think maybe some have the wrong impression. I can’t imagine any distiller that plans on selling product just collects a run heads through tails and barrels it. What some will do is track the abv and nose and taste example they will start collecting at 140 proof and stop at 90 proof and keep everything in between . Theoretically if they ran the still correctly they only have hearts so there aren’t heads or tails in the final product and it was a “cut” however it is a “get what you get and don’t get upset” sort of thing, whereas making smaller cuts within the heart run allows a blender to pick and choose the best of what’s coming off and even mix in some of the head or tail product to increase the nose or body. If a home distiller is running say 15 gallons and they start with a good mash and run the still correctly they probably don’t really gain anything from making small cuts and blending and can still age the product to be a nice sip of whiskey , It also doesn’t provide much benefit to do a strip run with that small of a quantity. The benefit of stripping is it removes the foreshots and tails from the final spirit run and reduces the quantity to make running it more controllable. What Daniel was referring to is how a large distiller operates and he is correct running a large vat cuts are crucial to a good product because during the collection the nose and flavor is going to vary noticeably from gallon to gallon or even quart to quart during the heart run. I realize this isn’t a distilling channel and I am sure Jesse could explain it better but I know a lot of MBs are getting into distilling and thought I might be useful to share. Cheers
Why do people make it their mission to make people like what they like? Pothead in HS were the one group that asked if you want some and fully respect you if you decline, and if they bring it up again, it isn't peer pressure, it's cause they forgot they already asked
I will happily take the 3 minutes! I'll be that annoying salesmen who won't take his foot out of the door jam, except it will be my little hop sacks dangling in your faces. Can't wait!
ATTENTION PLEASE. Someone choose my next bottle of whisky! Either a Deanston 12, Arran 10 or Killerran 12.. I have had various bottles of each in the past and like them all equally but can’t decide.
If you have an Alexa, you can ask for a random number between 1 and whatever. I use this to decide what whiskey I'm going to drink when I'm indecisive.
All 3 of these are fabulous in their own ways. Can’t go wrong. My personal choices of these is Kilkerran 12. If you’ve had them before, spread your horizons go somewhere else. Lots of great whisky out there. These pretty much will be available in the future
How can you NOT tell us what distilleries are NOT making cuts (Rio Brazos in College Station isn't ... or if they are, they're making the worst cuts of all time!) ... cheers!
