    Sifting through darkling beetles trying to remove the frass and then adding more substrate.
    Mealworms are a high source of protein and fiber for our feathered friends. With a size from 1-1.5 inches long, these insects are a rich source of protein that is necessary for muscle development in birds. At the same time, however, they are low in calcium and should not be the exclusive food offered at feeders.

    What type of substrate do you use? Where did you get your grinder?

      @@Conrad_the_new_kid what grinder is it? In a mealworm group I was told it’s hard to the mealworms to dig around in the ground up powder rather than light and fluffy wheat or chicken starter. Have you found an issue? I would like to know your input

      @@achickandherhomestead I just started my mealworm “farm” a couple months ago but I would assume that if you have a lot of mealworms and not a overwhelming about of bedding that the mealworms would move around fine? The next time I change my mealworm bedding I think I might try and crush it a little. If you find out what kind of grinder he used please let me know.

    Don’t you lose eggs when you sift?

    • @bluffcitymicrofarms5501
      @bluffcitymicrofarms5501  5 месяцев назад +1

      I’m sifting the eggs out and they will go into a new bin to hatch away from the beetles.

      @@bluffcitymicrofarms5501 so you use one sifter to separate the Beatles, then a smaller sifter to separate the eggs from the poop?

    • @bluffcitymicrofarms5501
      @bluffcitymicrofarms5501  5 месяцев назад

      @specUVdust the eggs will stay in the frass (poop) until they hatch and the mealworms get big enough to sift from the frass. I just add substrate on top and about 2 weeks later add a few carrots.

    What do to do with the beetles

    • @h.s.6269
      @h.s.6269 11 месяцев назад

      Both the beetles and the other stages of their cycle (pupae and mealworm) are great for feeding many birds and reptiles. The "waste" is also amazing in gardens as fertilizer, composting, and the chiton can help encourage plants to defend themselves against some pests when soaked and sprayed iirc.

    Bro my pupas transforming to beetles but.. They due after 1or 2 days.. And they are so weak..
    Any solution ?

    • @bluffcitymicrofarms5501
      @bluffcitymicrofarms5501  3 года назад

      They probably don’t have enough moisture in the pupa phase. I would try adding a humidifier around the pupa and see if that helps
