The 1985-88 Fourtrax 250 have the single handle bar headlight that can be removed with a cord attached, too. When you have a large load on the front rack, that's the only disadvantage to them. I have a 1985 Fourtrax 250 and a 1996 Fourtrax 300 4x4. Rock solid machines! I don't see myself replacing them ever. I bought the 1985 used in 2001. I had the starter rebuild once in 20 years. Even then, I just kick started it for a year or two before I had it rebuilt. Outside of the oil, filters, & spark plugs - that's the only service it has needed. It's been used quite a bit, and it did all my snow plowing for me until I upgraded to the 1996 4WD 300 last year. I couldn't justify buying a new Rancher or one of the other Honda models when I could get a really nice used 300 for about 1/3 the cost.

That could be a number of things. The CDI box is up under the front end so that could have sparks if it’s shorting out. Also check your coil and coil wire on the front of the engine to make sure a stick or something hadn’t damage the spark plug wire or coil wires. Probably wouldn’t hurt to jack the front end up and spin the wheels to see if you have a wheel bearing going out. That’s just a few ideas. I would start by looking at all the wires and relays to make sure nothings exposed. If you don’t see anything look over the front end real good. Let me know what you find please

There is a large one and a small one. if you can get to the large one. grab it and squeeze it real hard. Then try to start it. If its got spark the CDI box is going out. The little box beside it is your oil alarm that goes to your light. There's a good possibility its the CDI. I have replaced mine twice. So Check those. The stator in your motor is what charges your battery. It sends voltage to your regulator which send the voltage to your battery. It could be your regulator went bad and over charged your battery. The regulator is mounted to the frame usually under the rear fender it will have ribs on it like a amp does. Try squezzing the cdi to see if you have power and then kick start or roll it over by the switch to see if you have power. if not put a battery on it and check the voltage at the coil plug in to see if you have 12 volts.

You are exactly right and this has done been covered in the comments below. I can not edit the video without removing the video entirely and then download it again.

"4 wheeler that's almost 50 years old" check that math again. It's an 88 model. You also said you rode it for 30 years. Said you bought it in 1998. So unless you were riding it when your boss had it that math don't work out either?

My bad. On the math. It is a 1988 model. I bought it in 1998 both of the ones I bought had set for years. I did not ride them when he owned them but I have rode it since 1998. So that would be 23 years. Ok so that makes it 33 years old correct? I will see if I can make the corrections by text on the video. This was a quick video that I started shooting and should have done the math on it first before filming.

@@pineylife I know how old these things are and I know you do too. We all exaggerate a bit. But there is someone watching this that has no clue that might not even look at them if he didn't catch the year model cause he thinks there 50 years old. 😂 Well I guess that's good, less people that want these excellent machines.
      I have 2, an 89 model and a 98 model. Both 2wd

Bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best ever bike built is the 80ish --2004 Kawasaki 300 Bayou 4x4. I got my first 4x4 atv. in 1989. I still have that bike--looks mint-- I bet while that idled and stuff doing chores and now spraying all our acreage weeds it has thousands and thousands of hours. Only replaced rear tail light bulb, spark plug and changed oil with Royal Purple ATV oil in spring and fall. I have (4) of them. An '89 a '94 a '98 and my newest a '04. One is very built up. Lift kit, "16 inch Mud Grappler tires, built motor, re-jetted carb, perf. exhaust, snorkel, and more. Have sprayer and a snow blade with cab on other and last one is wife's run -around bike. BEST ATV. EVER BUILT PERIOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No sense in cussing and caring on. Struck a nerve there huh. Every body has there opinions on what brands is the best. Sounds like you have had some reliable machines. Couldn't agree more on the Royal purple oil. I run that in my chopper. Congrats on all your machines lasting and being reliable. That being said. We can agree to disagree on our brands.

@@pineylife I am disappointed and offended at the calling of my widely used term " bullshit" as in bull-shiter, maker of a joke, kidder, faker etc. that you say I swore. I don't think I was out of line in any way shape or form. I BULLSHIT people all the time when I go into fits about Chevy vehicles because I've restored over 400 '67-'72 Chevy 4x4 trucks since 1980. But anyway we might not be able to agree on atvs but it sounds like we agree on the brand of trucks. I have had several 67s and one 68. All of which I went from straight 6s to V8s. @@pineylife I don't mean to keep throwing stones at your Fourtrax 300 but I just remembered last night one thing a did like a bit better for my use was the shock on every corner concept. It just seemed at the time(way back in late 80's when I was looking at my first 4x4 atv.) I actually almost bought a Fourtrax ! They are very similar almost identical specs and designs. I wouldn't have a belt drive trasmission --including a Kawi' stuck up my you know where. They belong in snow machines. P.S I am a Harley man too-just small time in 90's. A Hugger, just a dang fun little bike, souped it a bit, Scream'in Eagle, K&N, drag pipes, two -up seat-- that's it. Lota fun. We were more into '68-'73 steel bumper Vettes. Had few of them. No hard feelings buddy -didn't mean to come off a bit dicky to ya.

@@jameskiesau7543 no offense taken. The signal shock does make for a very stiff ride on fourtrax. They are actually real stiff all the time. Lol. But the stiffness helps out when you got a load such as a deer or what not… We built choppers for years under the name hard road customs most of our show choppers was Yamaha road stars but we did build several harleys and a couple ss engine bikes. That all come to a halt in 2008. Heck I don’t even own a bike now. Lol. I like vettes but I have always been a chevy II guy. Favorites are 66 and 67. As far as trucks any Chevy will do. But I really like 67 thru 72. We might have got off on the wrong foot a little but o think we have a lot of hobbies in common. Take care
