GillyTheKid: "I've never talked about my favorite 3D Mario game before... ...now is the time." SomeCallMeJohnny: *Angrily sips coffee and flask of liquor*
You just opened my eyes to why I don't like Sunshine nearly as much as I did as a kid: I absolutely ADORE the *locations* of Delfino Plaza, Sirena Beach, Gelato Beach, and Noki Bay, and used to just play around in and explore those areas for hours when I was younger. I accidentally found Sirena Beach by playing around with Yoshi trying to eat those birds in Delfino Plaza. But now that I'm older and just want to play through those stages for the shines, the (admittedly) lackluster or even bad MISSION designs have really stuck out in this video. Dang. I wasn't expecting a culture shock to come from this video.
Yeah, I agree completely. I didn’t like Galaxy very much at the time because felt it lacked a soul, but when I want to sit down and play some Mario, it’s usually the one I go for.
On the eel you can actually use the eels tears to get more life. You take damages but you still get your life refilled. Also the collision is wonky and you can just sit on the bottom and spray through the eel
I figured that out as a kid. I sit in the eels mouth all the time and spray until he tries to eat me and hover out of there. Takes me 2 minutes besides climbing to the dive spot.
I found that there's a really easy pick for the best Sirena Beach Shine: Mysterious Hotel Delfino. It illustrates the strongest aspects of the stage, being all the hidden secret passages between rooms, and the fun interactions between NPCs. Discovering the ins and outs of this hotel was honestly a treat to me. Which makes up for the absurdity of the fact that this entire mission hinges on the fact that you can't get past the guy guarding the pool, so you need to find another way in, which includes feeding a Yoshi a pineapple that the fruit stand conveniently lost.
Absolutely right. Personally, I love hotel themed levels anyway, so this was always a good stage for me. Nintendo has kind of a thing for Hotels paired with mysterys and I love it everytime. Also the Manta boss fight is great.
The hard Shine Sprites to get in Super Mario Sunshine are: Collecting 8 red coins while Mario is in the pinball machine like contraption in Delfino Village, and collecting 8 red coins in secret places in all 8 worlds and within the time limit, but Mario must complete the secret passages first without using FLUDD by stealing it by fake Mario, and no room for error. For example: In the secret cave at the Bianco Hills (course 1) and the secret cannon at the Pinna Park (course 4), Mario must collect all 8 coins within 1 minute the time limit for each one. You don't have to unlock Yoshi until getting 2 more Shine Sprites in Pinna Park, which is saving the several Sunflowers from eating Koopas who are hiding inside the white eggs with green spots which assemble as Yoshi's eggs.
So addressing the issues with the second Petey fight in Bianco Hills, there are very few instances you can't spray Petey out of the air from the ground level. You don't actually need to platform on all of the buildings if you spray straight upwards. This can help keep him out in the open field behind the village too negating the camera issues. Now that being said I'm not defending this boss fight or this shine sprite, I'm just saying there are easier ways.
Laid-Back Kain Thank you, I literally came into the comments to see if someone mentioned the fact that you can do that, because I was legitimately surprised when he put that as the worst one when that's one of the easiest (and less annoying) shines in that level.
Man I strongly disagree with some of these entries. There are times here where my favorite mission in a level is your least favorite, and vice versa. Still, it's nice to see one of my favorite games get some love.
Pretty sure you can also clear the Goopy Inferno with some clever triple jumping and damage boosting. That one was always my least favorite since I never thought to do that and would always attempt it legit. Also I was betting the worst Delfino Plaza sprite would be the pachinko one. _Everybody_ hates the pachinko one.
I'm honestly surprised the manta boss wasn't the worst mission for Sirena Beach. That seems to be the one a lot of people don't like, or remember fondly at least.
Absolutely love this game. The way he moves in conjunction with FLUDD makes you feel like a ninja. It’s crazy because at first I hated how the controls felt, but as you progress you find yourself getting used to it all. Excellent game!
2:01 my dude you can clip into the side of the building and walk underwater with Yoshi. That makes it faster. Yeah it’s cheating but this game is stupid SMH. It’s still painful but that makes it a little less painful. I hate that mission. I also hate getting the blue coins in corona mountain. Those were my worst missions.
The memorable moment for the Game Grumps about that Chain Chomp bathtime one is the fact that Arin got himself stuck in the hole where the Chain Chomp goes, thus causing him to die when the Shine Sprite spawned in.
Pianta Village's last red coin mission (Star Sprite 8) really sucks. Not the whole mission itself, but parts of it. The mission requires you to look all over the village to find the red coins. Both above and below ground. This mission takes quite a while to complete even on additional playthroughs and a few of these coin can be really hard to find, but it's not the worst thing in the world. What DOES suck the most is that when you get all 8 red coins, the shine sprite appears on a cloud a distance away from the village high in the air. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Well you have to climb the big tree in the middle of the village and jump on one of the giant dandelions floating through the air to reach it. The issues is it's EXTREMELY easy to not reach the cloud that the shine sprite is on and what makes it even worse is that you get one shot at it because, like I said, it's quite a distance from the village...and the floor. So if you fall...it's into the bottomless void with you and all the time you spent on the mission. If not for the Watermelon level and pachinko...this would be my most hated level in the game. But all these levels have the same core issue...it's a gamble that you will lose most of the time. You can't use your skill to get victory...you have to pray to God things work out.
Honestly I didn’t find the Ricco Red mission that bad personally, although it certainly does have it’s issues (honestly my biggest one was probably that the second half of the path is a bit awkwardly pathed out).
Fun fact about the eel mission. Those purple blobs you see are the eels tears. Getting one takes a hit point but fills your air to max. Mission is super easy knowing that.
Also, that warp pipe in the death river takes you back to the entrance of Delfino Plaza. That is one of the biggest “fuck you” moments in any game ever.
I think the first mission in Sirena Beach is the worst one in that stage. For people who played Sirena Beach, I wouldn't blame them if they wanted to make manta rays extinct.
The chain chomps bath isnt as hard as u make it out to be , whenever he starts to get mad again you just butt stomp the peg back into the ground and it gives u enough time to cool him off.
I’m a little surprised you didn’t mention how you can glitch your way into the hut for the watermelon shine sprite and gelato beach. Great content keep it coming bro.
My opinion: Delfíno plaza Best: that one slide level Worst: the death river hands down (pachinko isn’t that bad) Bianca hills: best: hillside secret Worst: mission 8 red coins. Also 100 coins. Ricco harbor: best: caged shine sprite Worst: red coins in the water Gelato beach: best : secret Worst: Sandbird and watermelon festival Pinna park: best the first secret stage Worst: roller coaster balloons Sirens beach: best that one secret stage Worst: the stupid yoshi mission Noki bay: best shells secret Worst: eely mouths dentist Pianta village: best that one mission where you spray the piantas Worst: the chain chomp mission And hardest part of the game is blue coins in corona mountain
I agree that the watermelon one sucked but I beat it. I could never beat the Sand Bird as a kid. This video made me wanna whip out my gamecube to see how much better I've gotten though.
Surprised you didn't mention the glitch in Chain Chomp's Bath: Pulled him in but slip in the bath too? Great! Your shadow dies onscreen as the Shine appear animation plays! I managed to do that years before the Game Grumps did and I was PISSED!
So, apparently you can also get oxygen in the eel tooth cleaning stage from the tears it cries, at least according to Gamechamp3000's video "Can You Beat Super Mario Sunshine Without Hovering?" It doesn't make the mission any more fun - you're still having Mario be a fish dentist - but I figured I might share that for anyone who might not have seen that video.
This game deserves a remake. . .simply to fix all of its issues and make the game they intended to make from the beginning. (Plenty of signs that it was probably rushed.)
Sunshine is my favorite mario game. It's under appreciated and deserves a hd remake like how peaches castle was in odyssey. Or a part 2. Thatd be cool af! And like in mario 64 ds... Maybe nintendo can add extra worlds because to 64 7 worlds is way to short. The game is amazing its just 2 short. And if u read about it so much content was cut out. I heard even a train was planned to be in the game
Here's my list: (I'm not counting Shadow Mario missions because that would be my least favorite shine in every area) Delfino Plaza: Best: Red Coins in the Grass Worst: Pachinko Bianco Hills: Best: Down with Petey Piranha Worst: Road to the Big Windmill Ricco Harbor: Best: The Caged Shine Sprite Worst: Gooper Blooper Returns Gelato Beach: Best: The Sand Bird is Born Worst: II Piantissimo's Sand Sprint Pinna Park: Best: The Runaway Ferris Wheel Worst: The Wilted Sunflowers Sirena Beach: Best: Mysterious Hotel Delfino Worst: Scrubbing Sirena Beach Noki Bay: Best: The Boss of Tricky Ruins/The Shell's Secret Worst: II Piantissimo's Surf Swim Pianta Village: Best: The Goopy Inferno/Fluff Festival Red Coins Worst: Chain Chomp's Bath
I have to admit that I certainly wasn't expecting Super Mario Sunshine to be his favourite 3D Mario game due to his unpopular video games opinions like shitting on Sonic Adventure 1 which is pretty highly debated like Super Mario Sunshine (like are both being called over-rated plenty of time). 😯 PS: I actually spit my drink when he said that Super Mario Sunshine is his favourite 3D Mario game. No offensive to him of course, everybody has their opinions and I also love Super Mario Sunshine. 😅
My favorite and least favorite missions are as follows: Delfino Plaza: Best: Turbo Nozzle Secret Course Worst: Toxic Flume Bianco Hills: Best: Down With Petey Piranha! Worst: The Red Coins of the Lake Ricco Harbor: Best: The Caged Shine Sprite Worst: Gooper Blooper Returns Gelato Beach: Best: Wiggler Ahoy! Full Steam Ahead! Worst: The Sand Bird is Born and/or The Watermelon Festival Pinna Park: Best: Mecha-Bowser Appears! Worst: The Wilted Sunflowers Sirena Beach: Best: King Boo Down Below (the only mission I actually like from Sirena Beach) Worst: Mysterious Hotel Delfino Noki Bay: Best: Il Piantissimo’s Surf Swim (not saying much, I don’t like Noki Bay) Worst: Eely-Mouth’s Dentist Pianta Village: Best: The Goopy Inferno Worst: Secret of the Village Underside
For me, I'd say that for the worst level in Delfino Plaza, it would be the Pachinko Machine. In this one, the red coins are in those small platforms and there really hard to get to. There's two on the left side that are almost impossible to get to! There's some sort of invisible fan blowing Mario away from the left side! When you finally get all the red coins, the shine sprite appears in a spot that you're most unlikely to land in. If you fall through the gap, you have to start ALL OVER! This one in my opinion, is the worst level in the whole game!
The turbo slide mini game is frustrating. I missed the shine and flew off the edge several times. They should have made the end of it longer, to give you more time to stop.
I really wanted to like the game and be a contrarian, but having played for a few hours I just realized something about it just wasn't fun. Glad to see this video
Does no one know you can ground pound the Pin on the chain chomps chain to hold him in place? (or even just let him roam freely until he naturally walks next to the hot bath where you can cool him off and drag him in very fast?)
I gotta disagree with you in some places, Sirena Beach is one of my favorite stages. Every time I get on SMS I have to play Manta Storm. With Goopy Inferno (another favorite) I've never seen any youtuber do it the way I've always done? I originally tried the pond method but kept messing up, so instead I go all the way around the stage to the tree in the tall grass and I just, side jump and dive off of one of the leaves. I've only ever missed Fludd like once with that method.
I might still be blinded by nostalgia but I actually think the stuff that used to frustrate me as a kid is just like a funny easter egg to me now. Like the game is kind of broken and unbalanced in places. It'd be better if it wasn't. But I like that Sunshine is still challenging because not only do you need to do stages that can be hard, but you also need to sometimes be a gamer god to beat the odds when it's straight up jank-city. The game's got soul for days, I'll take the 8 red coins on bloopers. The camera is really janky though, if that got an update I wouldn't complain. I was actually playing a few days ago and I played the 8 red coins in a bottle, found a door with a book behind it that's unobtainable but I just couldn't get the camera to work. But yeah, stuff like that book, still finding new stuff today, is why SMS will never stop being a magical place to me. Also, some of these. I hate to say it bro but skill issue, the watermelon level is fun af.
lol I got so lucky with the lily pads and with watermelon festival. I did end up getting all 8 red coins in 1 go on my 5th try or so for lily pads and I just kicked the watermelon down the hill for the festival and it rolled super near to the final walkway without popping. The game spared me

So what do YOU think the best and worst shine sprite missions are?
The Pachinko machine sucks
Never played Mario sunshine. Don't own a GameCube or a Wii.
Thanks for having me remember that pachinko machine part of the game jerk.

You can skip the whole Ferris wheel mission with spin jumping and FLUDD lol
Wow! I'm surprised not many people know that, including me!
This needs to be pinned I didn't know you could do that.
I learned that from chuggaconroy
Not even spin jumping, just literally any jump that’ll give you the distance
that’s how i thought u were supposed to do to honestly 💀💀💀

Pachinko, actually.
I love how you called the Lily pad minigame the "River of Death" XD. Love the video by the way.
I'm surprised that one mission where the pinatas keep throwing Mario through the air didn't make it on the worse list ...
I'M A CHUCKSTER! YEET!
It sure is no secret that nobody likes Secret of the Village Underside.
It's not a bad level honestly especially when you start to understand the positioning you need to be at to not get thrown into the abyss.
To this day i dont understand why going in a straight line is so hard? Is everyone drunk? How difficult is it to aim straight?

I was about to say the same thing, I think I remember doing that the last time I played. That shine is easy imo.
Haven't played the game in a decade but just seeing "The Watermelon Festival" instantly triggered me.
Yup
Just some advice, the eel will make air bubbles pretty often so you don’t have to leave the fight to refill your air
Man I strongly disagree with some of these entries. There are times here where my favorite mission in a level is your least favorite, and vice versa. Still, it's nice to see one of my favorite games get some love.
Well it's his opinion and I for one agree with most of these entries (especially that Watermelon mission).
You can fill up your air supply by drinking the fishs tears.
Let's hope the rumored remaster of Sunshine fixes these issues...

Super Mario Sunshine will always have a special place in my heart
Sunshine is also my favorite, despite it's problems. The momentum physics remind me of what Sonic should have. I hope Nintendo remakes it someday.
Well, we got 3D All-Stars, so there's that.
Sunshine's my favorite 3D Mario too but I'm well aware it's not objectively the best.
It has my favorite atmosphere of the 3D games, for sure.
I have a love hate relationship with it
2:01 my dude you can clip into the side of the building and walk underwater with Yoshi. That makes it faster. Yeah it’s cheating but this game is stupid SMH.

With the Rico Harbor red coins... why not just... not save the most annoying coin for last? Like.. why not leave a different one for last?
Pianta Village's last red coin mission (Star Sprite 8) really sucks. Not the whole mission itself, but parts of it. The mission requires you to look all over the village to find the red coins. This mission takes quite a while to complete even on additional playthroughs and a few of these coin can be really hard to find, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Sunshine is my favourite game in the series but holy crap there are a lot of bullshit shines, especially the 8th one in each level.
On the giant eel level I swear you can replenish your air by spraying the eel's tears
It's running right into them, they count as air bubbles so they do one damage and then fully heal
My favorite video game of all time!
Even with the knowledge that it’s definitely the black sheep of the 3D Mario games
"I've never seen anyone beat this level first try" Lol then you've never watched a speedrunner play this game
First try. Not one millionth.
Did you know that the poisonous bubbles that the eel spits out heals you after you take the damage?
I hope that makes it easier.
I'm pretty sure that you can drink the eel's purple tears instead of going for coins.
If there's any Mario game that deserves a remake.
It's sunshine.
It's the most broken Mario game and remaking it would do wonders on it.
Found you
Sometimes I'm so edgy I cut myself
I disagree, it being so broken is what makes it fun imo
For Sirena Beach the best episode to get 100 coins is in Episode 3, where you can use Yoshi to eat up the big boos for coins.
I never really had that much trouble with the Eel.
I didn’t want to lose my mind with the Delfino Plaza River, so I used Action Replay codes.
Fun fact about the eel mission. Those purple blobs you see are the eels tears. Getting one takes a hit point but fills your air to max. Mission is super easy knowing that.

This is hands down the best Mario game and no that is not just the nostalgia talking.
My opinion:
Delfíno plaza
Best: that one slide level
Worst: the death river hands down (pachinko isn’t that bad)
Bianca hills: best: hillside secret
Worst: mission 8 red coins. Also 100 coins.
Ricco harbor: best: caged shine sprite
Worst: red coins in the water
Gelato beach: best : secret
Worst: Sandbird and watermelon festival
Pinna park: best the first secret stage
Worst: roller coaster balloons
Sirens beach: best that one secret stage
Worst: the stupid yoshi mission
Noki bay: best shells secret
Worst: eely mouths dentist
Pianta village: best that one mission where you spray the piantas
Worst: the chain chomp mission
And hardest part of the game is blue coins in corona mountain
I agree that the watermelon one sucked but I beat it. I could never beat the Sand Bird as a kid.

Looking at the picks for worst Shines in the game, it's not hard to wonder why Nintendo hasn't remade Sunshine already.
So, apparently you can also get oxygen in the eel tooth cleaning stage from the tears it cries, at least according to Gamechamp3000's video "Can You Beat Super Mario Sunshine Without Hovering?"
It doesn't make the mission any more fun - you're still having Mario be a fish dentist - but I figured I might share that for anyone who might not have seen that video.
I played this recently out of recommendation, with a guide for blue coins, and still hated it. You can like it if you want but I despise the design.
I actually found the strike back because you can shoot while on the ground.

@@Nel_Annette Same Here!!
Nel_Annette honestly the games graphics have aged extremely well, I’m still impressed it’s an 18 year old game, they chose the perfect art style
It’s not that great
Here's my list: (I'm not counting Shadow Mario missions because that would be my least favorite shine in every area)
Delfino Plaza: Best: Red Coins in the Grass
Worst: Pachinko
Bianco Hills: Best: Down with Petey Piranha
Worst: Road to the Big Windmill
Ricco Harbor: Best: The Caged Shine Sprite
Worst: Gooper Blooper Returns
Gelato Beach: Best: The Sand Bird is Born
Worst: II Piantissimo's Sand Sprint
Pinna Park: Best: The Runaway Ferris Wheel
Worst: The Wilted Sunflowers
Sirena Beach: Best: Mysterious Hotel Delfino
Worst: Scrubbing Sirena Beach
Noki Bay: Best: The Boss of Tricky Ruins/The Shell's Secret
Worst: II Piantissimo's Surf Swim
Pianta Village: Best: The Goopy Inferno/Fluff Festival Red Coins
Worst: Chain Chomp's Bath
Without even watching, I'm guessing poison river and the watermelon festival are in the worst category.
Sandbird
I liked the open options in doing things a lot too! Also sliding everywhere
I am kind of surprised that you didn't speak of the sandbird mission nor of the dreaded Pinko machine type level.

Yesterday, I knew he’d upload today. But my college work was due last night so I was up all night after I finished it. Oops.
Walking in Mario Sunshine is a nightmare
I always glitched under the map to reach Delfino Plaza’s Red Coin across the Poisonous River. The intended way is too frustrating.
You can also cheese the runaway ferris wheel mission pretty easily and not climb the backside at all.
I didn't realise you could get softlocked on that mission! D: I'm sorry it happened to you, Gilly
So, does softlocked mean he can't ever get that Shine Sprite, unless he resets the game?
6:20 holy shit poor balrog
Wow, someone who absolutely doesn’t hate Mario Sunshine other than Exo, I’m surprised.
The turbo slide mini game is frustrating. I missed the shine and flew off the edge several times. They should have made the end of it longer, to give you more time to stop.
I actually kinda like the watermelon challenge. It's hilarious
I really wanted to like the game and be a contrarian, but having played for a few hours I just realized something about it just wasn't fun. Glad to see this video
red coins on the water has taken years off my life
I wish my laptop wasn't crap so that I could emulate this game...
0:36 if you want to skip the sponsor part
The watermellon wasn’t THAT bad to me. It wasn’t fun, but it wasn’t the worst mission.
I am shocked the death river or lily pad game was only number 5. That is the bane of my existence and I still have not beat it to this day LOL
I’m tired of my old bifold wallet... but I just got furloughed. Sorry Gilly.
Does no one know you can ground pound the Pin on the chain chomps chain to hold him in place?
(or even just let him roam freely until he naturally walks next to the hot bath where you can cool him off and drag him in very fast?)
I just killed all those qataquacks or whatever before moving the melon. What a drag it was though.
Honestly, the handy timer actually made stay and watch the sponsor, especially since its a lot shorter than most
A list that doesn't have the pachinko machine Shine Sprite on it, or would that be too obvious?
I gotta disagree with you in some places, Sirena Beach is one of my favorite stages. Every time I get on SMS I have to play Manta Storm.
With Goopy Inferno (another favorite) I've never seen any youtuber do it the way I've always done? I originally tried the pond method but kept messing up, so instead I go all the way around the stage to the tree in the tall grass and I just, side jump and dive off of one of the leaves. I've only ever missed Fludd like once with that method.
13:34 that’s why I love 3d Mario
The Bowser Jr balloons always reminded me of Winnie the Pooh
No chucksters?
am i the only one who actually kinda enjoyed this level? 5:03
Mannn Petey Piranha Strikes Back is great thoooo
lol I got so lucky with the lily pads and with watermelon festival. I did end up getting all 8 red coins in 1 go on my 5th try or so for lily pads and I just kicked the watermelon down the hill for the festival and it rolled super near to the final walkway without popping. The game spared me
What was he censoring around 10:45?
The way i did the Sirena Beach 100 coins was doing it in Mysterious Hotel Delfino
I’m surprised the worst list isn’t filled with those stupid platforming areas without fludd, None of them are good imo
