We're obsessed with All About Reading!!! My daughter has dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, language processing disorder, severe apraxia of speech, and is on the autism spectrum. I was told she'd never talk (she started at 4 and now at 8, sounds like a 5yr old but still 🎉). Knowing all that, we knew reading would be hard, it was much harder than we thought, this along with some Orton Gillingham dyslexia workbooks were game changers, she LOVES reading now. I highly recommend this program!!!
You have me trained like a Pavlovian Puppy, logging on RUclips Saturday mornings for a new Life in the Mundane video 😂. Makes Saturday mornings when I’m prepping to go see patients a little happier.
We are huge fans of All About Reading as well! My oldest was convinced he was “just not good at reading” until we switched to AAR. Now he’s gone through Levels 1-3, and we’re continuing with Level 4 to continue to build that confidence with high-level words. We just started Level 1 with my second kiddo, and it’s going great. Love that I can keep using it with all my kids without buying anything new!
I love that it’s open and go, I love the fluency sheets and my kids don’t moan about them!!! When I use a lot of readers I can’t see what readers are helping my kids but I love seeing them improve with their reading!!! I love the language stuff as I see it could help them with reading and spelling!!! I’ve found AAR helps my dyslexic kids to read to a point where they are confident enough to decode so are able to understand meaning better as they can do both together!!!
We did Saxon phonics last year with my daughter (still had it from when my oldest was learning to read) she did well with it but I could tell we were not going to continue with it for level one. I researched a lot and we ended up getting all about reading. Even though my daughter prob could have started with level 2 I decided to take her back to level 1 and start there. She’s done so much better and her confidence has increased so much. We are only on lesson 24 but it’s been such an amazing investment for our family. We don’t have another kid to pass it down to after her but that’s okay because if it’s helping her then that’s all that matters.
I have seen others have added another language arts to go along with this program, saying it is not a complete program. I was just curious if you add another program with this? If so, what do you add and at what age do you add?
All About Reading Level 1 is an excellent choice for building foundational reading skills and beginning comprehension. To complement this, consider incorporating at least 20 minutes of read-aloud time daily, as it not only enhances comprehension but also fosters a love for reading. Spelling instruction can be introduced after completing AAR Level 1, with All About Spelling being a great follow-up that aligns well with the phonics concepts learned. Additionally, Grammar Galaxy offers a gentle introduction to grammar during AAR 1 or 2, using engaging stories and activities that require minimal writing, making it perfect for young learners. This combination creates a well-rounded language arts curriculum for your child.
I’m so excited to start this with my child next fall! Not that I want to rush time either 😂 but for this year (4k) we just have other quality curriculum choices that I want to Work through first and then dive into AAR!
So honestly I found that while the program was neat it wasn't anything super special for the price. Unlike the older levels which i think are totally worth it.
Price may be high but it’s still great I did it with my daughter and she loved everything about it I’d say it was worth every penny for me personally. From the creative coloring sheets to the poems to the puppet all of it was awesome she adored the program and begged to continue using the puppet of course you can get your own puppet and everything else like she said but it’s all together for you and was a saver for me being a beginner homeschool mom 4 years ago if your child is not into coloring or crafting maybe skip the pre reading program
What are your thoughts on the pre reading level? I know they have placement test available. I did watch a couple reviews that stated it may lead to buy pre reading level when level one would work. I didn't know if you had any thoughts on this and if you believe starting with level one would work just as well... ? Thank you so much for your thoughts!
So sorry for the delay I just saw this. I don’t personally recommend pre reading, not because it’s not good, it’s just a bit pricey and I feel like you can find/make your own pre reading curriculum for cheaper. That being said that actual AAR curriculum levels 1-4 and so worth it. I think you could start at level 1 but maybe just take it slow.
My child really does not enjoy the student pages that have lots of words on them. Even when we break it up, I think the number of words are just overwhelming. Any tips? I’m trying to figure out how to adapt this and make it work. We are using AAR 1 and she is 7.
I sometime photocopy them and cut the sheet up into strips. Then hide the pieces around the room, turn out the lights, and let them search with a flashlight. Once they find a piece with a section of words they read it before looking for another. It’s a fun way to break it up
I bought IEW's PAL program for reading and it's going really fast for my kiddo. We've only made it through lesson 8 with tons and tons of review days. I know you've used both PAL and AAR. Which do you prefer especially for a struggling reader?
@@HomeschoolMamaJ yes it’s been on my list but unfortunately hasn’t happened yet due to my daughters medical complications this year but Lord willing I will have it out in June.

Haha 😂 well I hope you enjoyed it lol
The re-usability is definitely a major factor for me, too.
Yes same
I agree that for beginner readers...these are FAR more interesting and engaging than many other options.
Yes 💯
We are big AAR fans. It has helped my severely dyslexic son learn to read with less frustration, for both me and him!
So true
We absolutely love AAR! We are almost done with level 1!

Thoughts on the Pre-Reading Level?

Can you compare AAR and PAL please? Feeling torn on which to start with for a child with various disorders related to autism.
Came here to ask the same thing. I heard in older videos it was a planned video, but I don't see it yet. 🙃

I like both for different reasons. I’m currently having my youngest two go through pal and then will transition into AAR
@@LifeintheMundane Are you still planning on making a comparison video of the two? It would be super helpful! 😀
