I just want to thank you for sharing your sewing knowledge and consistently putting up videos. You have no idea how much that meant to me when things were so "locked down" a couple years ago. I think when you were talking about the Cielo Top it triggered a memory of that time. There were a few sewing RUclips channels that I watched all the time during that dark time and the videos brought a little bit of sunshine and peace. I strongly believe that God works through us and I feel like he is doing that with you. Thank you!
Love your videos. I’ve been sewing for 55+ years and always learn something. I would love a video of fabric types. You always talk about different types of fabrics that I’m not too familiar with . I’ve been sewing with PDF for 10 years and it has expanded my sewing and fixed my fit issues with all the full bust adjustments I can make.
Thank you for curating these wonderful button up patterns for us. I had over looked pattern S1538, however after your video I quickly made it up in seersucker. Wow! This is a great pattern with several variations. It is now a TNT for me. Thank you for sharing.
:) I made mine out of a light/medium weight poly jersey fleece. (Jersey finish on the right side and fleecy on the wrong side). I had mine cut out by 5:30pm and by 11pm I had it finished. Just in time for my flight the next day. Worked great!
I have a larger bust and have so many more knit tops than woven - easier to fit. I think it is also that I find a woven top harder to style than a knit top. I’d love to see a woven top styling vlog. 🤪😜
I, too, discovered that a button up shirt with just the collar stand works great on me. I didn't know I had a short neck until one of your previous videos talked about that and I made a different pattern and now I have found my perfect shirt. Thank you!
Where to begin… You look great in your filming outfit. Loved ALL your tops but that orange blouse-Wowzer! So I’m so inspired to sew again with that video. And I’ve been in a slump so that’s a really good thing. I feel like I had too many things not turn out and some of it was in such lovely fabric. (I’ve gained weight when I was supposed to be loosing 😠) I get tired of all the adjustments I need to make. The same as you it seems (at least from waist up). I’ve often wondered about learning to make patterns because some times it seems it might be easier…. Then to go to all the trouble and think you’re going to have a beautiful fitting top and then it doesn’t work is hard on the emotions 😞 Anyway… Thank you for your video!
You are not alone! I have totally been there (and still have times when I have those fails). It can be so frustrating. However, I have learned that picking the right size and not overthinking the fitting adjustments makes a world of difference. Also, finding pattern companies that fit you better than others also really helps. Hang in there. Fitting does get easier!
Like you my wardrobe has been mainly stretch tops for years as I could never get a button up to fit. Just made the harrisin shirt which fits beautifully across the bust but discovered I've also got a short neck and actually hate the collar on me 😅. I'm in the process of removing it to make it justthe collar stand instead. I also avoid those shoulder type details like the plague, although I find a raglan really suits me.
After your vlog post on S1538, I decided it was time again to make a button up shirt. Bought the pattern(forgot I purchased it some years ago), and sewed it up. I was so impressed with the detail of directions- my shirt came out beautifully and fits so well. I plan to make more. I’m ordering the Itch-to-stitch pattern from yesterday because I have some of the same linen in my stash. I think it will be great. I do plan to make another Harmony as well. TFS.
Have had the Rhapsody pattern for 2 years with the intent to make for my daughter. She doesn’t think it has enough detail but I love it. I’m making it soon!
I’m so happy you’re going to make the Metra! I have the pattern pieces taped together and everything ready to cut one out, and it’s in an Ivory Ponte I got from Mood. I’ve watched every RUclips sew along I can find and I’m still chicken. It will encourage me so much to see you. You look fabulous in your red sweater.
It’s super easy to put together. The only area I got mixed up on is the shawl collar piece itself. You have a little extra to fold under and I didn’t understand that it was meant to be at the bottom/hem and not the armscye. Ah well. Next time. ;)
I love the long sleeve button up shirt. It’s very flattering. The Harmony blouse with short sleeves is beautiful and your colors 😁The statement blouse is pretty too! Thank you for sharing your favorite woven tops since most of my stash is woven. I look forward to making at least one of the tops you included in today’s video. 👏🙌
It’s so funny you mentioned that red as being too warm for you. I think it looks fabulous on you! Though I can see in pics when your hair was darker how autumn colors suited you. I always dyed my premature gray red bc I loved it and subsequently was always color typed an autumn. Now I’m all gray and finding saturated mid tones suit me best. Color is fascinating/frustrating, still not sure if I’m doing it right 😂 but at any rate just wanted to say today’s outfit really looks lovely on you! Thank for all you do I so enjoy your channel
Oh I finally can use the Liverpool fabric from my stash . I can’t wait to sew along the blazer with you. I am buying that LN pattern now lol ! Thank you for sharing.
While I am making the Metra, I'm not doing a sew along for that one. Love Notions has offered (and will probably offer again) workshops for that pattern so I don't want to step on toes! I will give tips on it, though!
Wovens are better for the heat. I sew up any that open center front with buttons so no gapping. The ones I make I don’t have to do that because they are fitted to me, so no strain on the buttons.
Those were great woven selections! I have several of the Indie patterns but have yet to make them. I have a denim colored tencel from Stylemaker I have set aside for the Bonn from I2S. I still love the floral s/s top you made last spring!
This is such a great video. I have some of these patterns and have been going through my stash to make some spring & summer woven tops. Thank you. I know I shouldn’t make a comment about your hair which I love the style but looking at the picture of you in the Seychelles top with the auburn hair and what you have now, the blond watches your complexion out. The red that you are wearing is gorgeous. I hope you go back to the auburn. Please take this with love, not harsh criticism.. of course maybe your husband likes the blond in which case, wear the blond. I know, right, my husband has his opinions too, just like I do. Love you
@@TomKatStitchery I totally understand. I’m in the same predicament with mine only last time I wanted my hair shorter and I don’t know what happened but it is the worst haircut I’ve ever had, even my husband commented and he always likes my hair. So now I’m just trying to grow it out and look for a new hair stylist.
I love seeing what you make! I'm not the same body shape as you, but I can certainly relate to not wanting to draw attention to shoulders too much because I'm an inverted triangle. I love all of your button down shirts! I'm in the longg process of finishing my very first one, the Itch to Stitch Montana shirt, but I'm already debating which one I want to make next! I'm between the Liesl and Co Classic Shirt, and the S1538, but I do also have the Itch to Stitch Bonn shirt (I'm like 5' tall so maybe collar less is good?!). If you have a recommendation as to which may be a good next pattern for me, I'd appreciate it!
Good video and recommendations, thank you Whitney. I am very similar shape and height to yourself and have recently watched a vlog by a stylist who recommended shoulder pads for bigger busted, narrower shouldered women. I have tried it, and she is right, it does make my bust look a little smaller 😂😂. Not a top, but have you seen the Christine Haynes Varda dress pattern? It doesn’t have an FBA unfortunately, and is very simple, but it has a french dart, which I have found very flattering. I’m not sure how to do an FBA with a french dart though, so this may have to wait a while.
@@TomKatStitchery I thought it was interesting as it is counter intuitive 😁. The stylist sewed a strip of velcro onto each loose shoulder pad so that she could fasten them around her bra strap and use the pads in multiple garments. Interesting too that Style Arc have released a pattern with shoulder pads, maybe they are coming back into fashion.
Some of my favorite woven tops as well! I made the Vogue 8772 blouse when you did the how to do an FBA. My blouse is gorgeous but not in my color palette since having my colors done…need to make a new one. I made two Seychelles tops out of linen-one in navy and one in off white which I wore all last summer. Not too fond of Love Notions patterns on me because they look “baggy sort of” just not flattering. I even made the Tessa sheath dress and it’s hard to define…just isn’t flattering on me. Did your fabric show up as soon as you finished filming? I am thinking about giving the Kalle shirt from Closet Core a try this spring, maybe in a light chambray or fun rayon. Have you made that one?
It did!!!!! Urgh! I knew that it would 😂. I made the Kalle right when it first came out and it didn't go well. However, I'm positive it was because of me not fitting it correctly. I should give it another try!

Have you made a Cashmerette Harrison shirt? This is the year I will learn to fit/make a button up shirt. Was planning for the Harrison but now may try a Liesl and Co. Thoughts?
I have made the Harrison and it's lovely. It uses princess seams which is fun and different for a button up. I'm anxious to try their newest pattern as it uses darts. However, I can say from experience that the Leisl and Co Classic shirt is really nice. It fit really well from the get go!
