My mother passed away just over a week ago now and we were at her apartment to sort through things. I brought home some stuff and it landed all over the kitchen and living room. Most of it either need to be laundered or at least washed off. The next evening I was looking at the bomb that went off telling my husband "where do I start". Well he must be listening to me talk about watching you because he said "do the dishes first'. In the midst of all the kaos that I am currently going through that put a smile on my face. Yes he is listening to me. Thank you oh so much for that.
My 16 year old daughter really loves your “where will you look for it 1st” …..I think playing decluttering videos is helping, she decluttered her desk on her own! I think that’s a small win!
I’m really bad at remembering to do a 5 minute pickup, instead I use your q&as to do one long pickup session every week. It’s not ideal, but at least my flat is picked up once a week!
Dana! I heard you referenced on the Dave Ramsey show yesterday! This couple was doing their debt free scream and they were talking about getting their life in order and how you helped them. 💜💜
I didn’t get “where would I look for it first” and then I rebought a household supply after looking one place and realized it was a duplicate. I was able to combine them to one bottle and put them in the place where I’d look for it first. Putting it where you’d look for it first avoids over-buying clutter!
For the person who hates dusting, I know your pain 😉 I hated dusting because it took me almost 30mins to dust. I had to lift SO many items to be able to spray Mr Sheen onto the surface and wipe it off….then wipe the dusty items as I put them back. Since the container concept works so, so we’ll for me, I decided to have a big tub/container for my decor items, as I had space for it. So I put all the items i didn’t want out anymore in it. It made my dusting time so much quicker ( 4 minutes using a dusting glove…yep 4 minutes🙌) I then went through the tub that didn’t close because it had so much stuff in it and kept only what would fit inside. It seems too simple a solution but it did the trick for me…
I found my own life hack for dusting, because I really disliked dusting. I slip my hand into an old thick soft sock that my hand moves easily in. I spray Mr Sheen on my sock-hand, and simply run my hand over the surface I'm dusting, wiping with right, lifting with left. It's a joy to dust now
Now that I have minimalised my clothes packing is easy. I just pick my traveling outfit then pull everything out of my drawers and drop it into my suitcase. Packing done ! I put my laundry into a bin bag throughout the holiday and the that gets dropped into my suitcase for the return journey. When we get home I pull out the “laundry bag” and drop it by the washer, pull out the clean clothes and put them back in the drawer, stash the suitcase and I’m home.
To my fellow car travelers, last time I felt successful for the first time. I used the container concept. It was a professional, annual retreat. I took my largest clothing suitcase and my rolling cooler for my room as well as a tote bag for the meeting room, large enough to hold knitting along with paper note-taking tools, both help me listen better. The largest suitcase held my hot water pot, my laptop, and food not needing cooling in addition to my clothes and fussy knitting for unwinding from being "peopled out." I unpacked one bag at a time when I came home. Hope this helps someone else. ❤
The question about having space in containers while above clutter threshold -- it may be that in that situation someone could get rid of some containers! At least if you are speaking about literal bins/shelves, perhaps consider letting go of some storage-oriented furniture? That way you can still rely on the containers being the bad guy, which feels more tangible than clutter threshold.
Thank you so much for including the questions!! That was SO helpful! Sometimes I don't have time to watch the whole hour long video, but I loved being able to scroll through and listen to each of the questions that pertained to me! :)
I don't love dusting, either. When we repainted a few years ago I got rid of maybe 75% of the non-personal stuff on the wall and have never regretted it! (less to clean) For the rest of it I have found the dusting wands from the dollar store to be much easier and helpful than rags.
Yes! That's me too. I took a lot of pictures down and has helped so much, I don't feel like I'm choking just looking at my walls. And yes, I love the dusting wands!
For the person that has to pack kitchen stuff because of food allergies i would buy those camping cookware because they are collapable and can nest inside eachother for space saving. Also packing cubes are becoming such a trend to help people be more organized . The cubes can be ur containers
Thanks for doing these Lives! I’m so sad my schedule has changed and I can’t join in real time lately - still it’s great to be able to watch later and more than once !
OMG....TPAD (Time Passage Awareness Disorder) is definitely a candidate for addition to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Can be frustrating!
Time blindness is pretty common. It's often disordered for people with adhd and autistic people. I have 30 minute timers set that go off regularly so I can feel time passing easier.
Thank you so much for having a place for all of the misfit toys. (Cinderella?) This channel keeps me sane by knowing I am not the only whack job out here. Regardless of subject matter, we can all feel the underlying knowledge that our wire has a tiny kink. It is by no means a detriment, rather a sense of comfort that not all of you are lucky enough to have that to tune to.
Hi Dana! I think it would be a great idea for your viewers to own a copy of all three books and to keep them on hand as REFERENCE books while going through the process and beyond. Since each of your three books covers the three stages, I think they would be valuable to refer back to should the person find themselves in need. Just a suggestion. I personally started with library books, decided it was worth the investment to have all three to use as needed and found them at thriftbooks (I'm also resourceful). I don't buy brand new unless the book is a new release and came to this conclusion after going through your first book. You are awesome and real. Keep up the good work!!
For the multigenerational family, try a quarantine bin. Then you can see what items are used the most, especially kitchen stuff - spatulas, etc. I keep a large crock on the counter of the items we use the most, so they can be readily accessed. Hope that helps.
I made myself a packing checklist for when I pack for us going on vacation at our timeshare. Items I pack include everything from our clothes to a "kitchen box". The kitchen box is a medium plastic lidded bin that holds, salt, pepper, spices we usually use, plastic wrap, coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, laundry detergent and a small bottle of Dawn. We usually do our laundry the night before we leave to go home and pack our clean clothes so that all I need to do when we get home is unpack and put away our clean clothes. The kitchen box gets replenished with items if needed, except for the coffee, creamer, and sugar, which is added the day before we leave for vacation.
As to packing - packing cubes changed my life. We are a 2+2 family and everybody gets their packing cube or two (depending on the length of the trip). It is so easy to pack (container concept) + keep stuff in order when we get where we need to go. I finally am using the drawers and closets in hotels / rental apartments because it is so easy to put the packing cubes there. Previously it was just a mess of plastic bags inside travel bags or a suitcase. And when we get home it is also easy to unpack. Everyone unpacks their own cube and we have a big net bag for dirty clothes that goes straight into the hamper.
I absolutely agree with the idea of setting a schedule for bigger tasks...or 'reoccurring reminder' same thing either way but no matter what u call it it really is a great idea.
As always a great Live!! Today I actually was able to watch most of this one( 1 important call interrupted me early on)...but thank you so much for the replay!! ❤🤗
I know this is a weird comment, but the way you've done the coloring, to complement your complection and eye-color is really neat. I love your advice. I feel like you have been in the trenches and know. Thank you!
@lorenacorp you could do a time will tell him where you just say you are going to pack them away for a little while and see if it helps her laundry situation for three ish months? Dawn from the Minimal mom just did a video on this and would help her see how less clothes means easier laundry!
"Scarcity Mindset". Botta Boom. This is very problematic! I do not have this issue, but my partner does. I only work on decluttering my own stuff, and hopefully that will inspire him.
For the person that wants to simplify more but everything fits in the containers, if you have containers, you might be a visual clutterbug. I always feel cluttered if there are containers, I need to see my stuff.

This is a great idea. Getting rid of furniture also adds more open space to a home, adding a sense of relaxation
A feather duster dusts without knocking your brickabrack over especially if you do it frequently enough that the dust does not stick.
Your first audio book is great, you can feel very successful about it, don’t be critical, we always do something better the next time

Closing cabinet doors… I like seeing my stuff. Out of sight, out of mind! I leave closet doors open too!

Packing cubes are the best for packing.

At 26:00 (from Jojosando) the phrase I think is "Decluttering Regret". :)
Make it competitive! Most things picked up in 5 minutes!

Re-decluttering...yes, yes, yes!! 😉👍🏻

Loved this❤️
Nice and clear
Dawn has a sheet for # quantities.
Can it please be called "Slob Certified"? I'm mentally designing t-shirts

Dana says a shelf is a container too. Hope that helps!
Hi from Ireland! 🤗 G Ire
I can't stand open shelving even when it is perfectly organized.
I love doo-lollies! Thank you!
@Dana K White, is there a way to get to your Podcast on RUclips?
Oo I'm from Longview, too! Laura who submitted a question, can we connect so we can declutter together??
Hear you
Hearing you fine.
