So, f(x1+h) - f(x1) simply means that you are returning the value of the function at the position of x1+h minus the value at the position of x1. Returning the values gives you their Y, and you simply use (finalvelocity - initialvelocity) in a sense to get the distance between both Y positions. Then you divide that by the distance between x1 and x1+h, or simply h, and you have your answer. Never done calculus before; however, my experience in programming seems to be helping me conceptualize the process.
