Thank you Brian. I too am in Massachusetts and have recently placed an order for the solar roof. I have been going back and forth over the last year with price increases and comparing to other roof types, but have come to the conclusion this makes financial sense. My monthly energy consumption is between 1,900 (winter) - 3,600 (Summer). I’m getting a 26kwh system with two power walls, removing cedar roof, but I have to pay for not only removal but new plywood, which I need with any roof replacement. Thank you for the informative review, especially coming from someone based in MA.
Great summary! I went through my install too and my inspection is tomorrow. Great point about the gutters. You should make a separate video for that as none of the videos spoke about it and I’m struggling to find someone .. and same with me for the powerwalls. I was able to talk to the lead and position them in a spot where I liked. Now I’m tempted to make some videos sharing my experiences too.
Thanks! You're the second person to call out the gutters part of this video, so I just might create a separate video on that topic. I'd be really interested to learn more about your install experience. If you don't record that video, please reach out to me and maybe we can chat about it.
My install in CT completed 5 months ago. I wasn’t even told losing my gutters was an option. The tear down crew just took them off and magically I was left with no gutters and a $5,000 bill for new gutters I wasn’t anticipating. Tesla reports they’re going to pay me back but it has been 3 months and that has not yet happened. Nowhere in the contract did it say they’d remove the gutters. One thing I might add to this is if you have regular siding, they most likely are going to cut that siding. I’ve been fighting with tesla for 5 months to try to get them to fix my siding that got very damaged with the roof install. I unfortunately will probably have to go to arbitration to resolve these issues. That’s another thing I’d highly recommend is OPT OUT of arbitration! I wish I could go the normal legal route but I didn’t opt out within the 30 day timeframe.
Dude I had the exact same problem to the point where I had to cancel because of inconsistencies in what he was telling me and what I was seeing online and what boots on the ground were telling me... In stark contrast I had brand new air-conditioning installed throughout my house $18,000 the rep would call me constantly updating me on every little thing when there was an issue I couldn't even finish my sentence without him fixing it or responding with the correct answer. After the install I had some issues and he was just a sales rep and he bypassed the troubleshooting and went right to contacting the right people to come down and fix it the next day. That's the difference when you're dealing with a company that gives you someone that is one on one versus Tesla has one person that handles 30 different clients. As for the installation and the people installing it all that has to do with is where you're from here in the East Coast I mean New Jersey so the installers are a$$holes I know because my neighbor got his solar roof installed by Tesla. They were not at all as you described. Obviously that's a regional issue
Thanks for sharing. Getting to the installation phase was the hardest part. It seems that we're still in the early-adopter phase. Hopefully Tesla can improve the process, similar to how they improved the service around the model 3.
Thank you for your review of your installation experience. I am in the initial stages of buying and installing the Tesla solar roof. For such a huge purchase, I had initially submitted my order for my roof a year ago, but was hit with a huge price increase a few months later and declined to have the roof installed. Tesla has reached out to honor their initial quote…so I am again considering their roof. I know you mentioned installing 2 Powerwalls, but what is the size of your system? Do you charge an ev car? Our initial design provided 9 KW system. Do you think this enough? We are planning to buy a Tesla Y and a plug in hybrid.
Hi Betty, my system is 15KW. We do not have an ev at the moment but plan on getting one in the near future. Regarding the size of your system, it ultimately comes down to your energy needs and the details of your particular roof (size, orientation, obstructions, etc). I recommend talking to your Tesla rep. They *should* be able to guide you. If that doesn't work, I recommend checking out the Tesla Solar reddit channel: www.reddit.com/r/TeslaSolar/
I’m also in MA. Have you thought about changing your HVAC system to heat pump to take advantage of the solar energy? wondering you you have done such research. Thanks!
So why are you complaining about Tesla for the rain, it was your job to take care of that. Man, you complain a lot and blame it on others. Did you expect it to be quiet during a demo?

Please do, I’m starting the process now, your insight will be invaluable. Thanks OP for the video as well.
Brian, Very informative and valuable for me as I am waiting for HOA approval to proceed with my installation. Thanks!

nice advice

Hi, I have! I have oil heat atm and have been researching alternatives, including geothermal. I haven't made any decisions yet. Stay tuned...
How much does a system like that cost? how much watts is it?
have you ever considered other manufacturers of solar roof tiles?
Is the roof providing power to your home now?
Yes, but I'm still waiting for PTO from my utility provider, so I'm not allowed to export any energy back to the grid.
@Matt P Agreed. I have the Powerwall too in case we lose power due to a storm.
Do you have ALL electric appliances?
Yes, with the exception of my heat.
Brian, dont make excuses for Tesla's horrifically terrible CUSTOMER NO SERVICE...
Oh a "guitar on the wall" kind of guy. lol Tesla fodder for certain.
Helpful video but damn, did it have to take so long between chapters?!
how come no one talks about the costs?

Ummm yes you need gutters unless you live in the 🏜 desert
if you want to install a tesla roof the most you will need is a lawyer
Only possible if you opt out of arbitration within 30 days. I wish so badly I had done that
