Mike R Semper Fi, One of the guys I went in with has passed on, we went in in an impossible gamble the three of us all in the same platoon 3009. We never got together and not talk about those three months. My remaining friend, everytime we see or talk to each other, we just laugh for hours, same old stories that never get old. My boy Mike went in open, got Motor T, I went in garaunteed 0300, they made me take 0311, but I hated humping the base plate, so I failed out with the nick name "Short Round" got my beloved grunt title in the 2/2. And this is the kicker, My boy Brett, since he could type 60 words a min. Got stationed in Parris Island writing checks in the A/C. Ooo Rah!

I got to see the old barracks emptied around 2010 and then finally demolished in 2017. So far nothing has taken their place. And I've never gone looking for the new location. No need to in my opinion, I belong in the swamps.

I went through 3rd Battalion during the spring of '65. The barracks were relatively new then, 1st and 2nd Battalions were still the old wooden barracks from WWII. Plt. 306, we were on the third deck. My, my, if those walls could talk. I'm 75 years old now and I remember most everything about my 13 weeks on the island. I remember the names of each and everyone of my Drill Instructors. I I've been back to P.I. twice since I graduated, I guess in someway, it is to reaffirm that it really existed and it wasn't all a dream. It was surely a transitional time in my life and I'm eternally thankful for what the Marines instilled in me. Semper Fi Marines. Continue to march!

Sir, although I went through in 1981, 3rd Bn "I" Company and served from 81 to 86 , Lebanon, Beirut Era, you have ABSOLUTELY NO Idea how much what you've done here means to me!!! ESPECIALLY after SEEING MY OLD BARRACKS!!!!! (MY FAMILY AND I THANK YOU!!) I have been trying to get back to PI since I was medically discharged in '86 to do exactly what you have done here!!! When you're going through boot camp, you aren't able to see the other parts of the base, only what you are ALLOWED to see because your eyes only went where your DI told them to go!!!
I've been watching your video repeatedly because all of my efforts for " God, Corps and Country" has left me with limited mobility, amongst other serious injuries, and walking the base is not possible for me however, were I able to revisit there, I would CRAWL if I had to JUST to "touch base" once again with the place that I could NOT believer actually LEGALLY EXISTED! . I really would! The night we arrived, the place sounded like an insane asylum!!!!!!!!!!! From your video I could feel again the pain, anguish, laughter and the Blood, Sweat and Tears shed in our efforts to become United States Marines and the lifelong friends that I made throughout my Tour of Duty. YOU are, have been and will ALWAYS BE my BROTHER and what you have done here will and has brightened the eyes and warmed the hearts of ALL former 3rd Battalion Parris ISLAND Veterans.
The sadest part of your video is the acknowledgement of our Barracks being demolished, as it feels as though the Blood,, Sweat and Tears of those of us who were in attendance during those times are being demolished along with what we once called, for 3 unbelievable months, our"Home." I cannot thank you or write enough, Brother, for what you have done here, for us, for ME! . Apparently it meant as much to You as it meant and still Means to those of US who survived the DI's, the Heat and Hell of 3RD BN. Parris Island, SC!!
Thank you, God Speed and Semper FI!!!

To the left of K Co in this video is my old barracks. Back in '62, they didn't display company signs, but I was in R Co, Plt 304. To the left of my barracks in this scene was the chapel, and the HQ Building was directly across the drill deck from my barracks. My first work detail away from Platoon 304 was in the HQ; we swept & swabbed the deck, emptied the trash cans, and dusted the area. There were pogey-bait vending machines with signs on them saying, "No Recruit Shall Use This Machine." Only a couple of us recruits had any money, but the ones with "silver-change" were able to buy some candy bars, much to our envy. On this field we won Drill competition. 305 was our sister platoon. They were reservists, and wore boondockers, so they didn't have to blouse their trousers. Ubi sunt? Sic semper gloria mundi.

I watched another series of videos about 3rd Bn and got chills because the video starts out between the first and second buildings farthest from the chow hall. That was my barracks back in 84 when I was in platoon 3054. We only have our memories of those days when everything was strange and new. I was always looking around and trying to figure out what was going on and where I was in relation to this base in its totality. Our little world of the chow hall, HQ and our barracks made me feel isolated but somehow confident in my security. I remember going to other parts of the base, but I always felt unsure about where I was and seemed unsure about my surroundings. I had confidence in my DI and felt they were looking out for me and my fellow recruits. It is amazing how you can take a teenager and turn them into a Marine in just a few short weeks. I say it was short, but it seemed to be a lifetime while we were training there. I hope these videos conjure the ghosts of the past for my fellow Marines and we remember why we served and for what we served. God Bless America & the USMC.

    3057 Hotel Co. 1988
Recycled to 1st Bn shortly after the rifle range due to cellulitis in my foot. 3rd herd will always be in my blood though.
I recently met up with an old boot camp buddy from 3rd in Vegas at The Leatherneck Club (2/25/2022) and reminisced about them damn good training days.

I got out of H early '87; we had a guy in C 1/8 with cellulitis. After he flicked a lighter in my face in the Geiger squad-bay, I kicked him in the leg--to this day I have no idea what cellulitis is or how you get it but I do know if you give cellulitis a swift kick they'll be limping and screaming to get at you as you easily flee to safety.

Was just thinking about my old days when I ran across this video. 3RD Battalion 1982. Can't believe time goes by so fast. You got hell if you were from NYC. Used to PT in boots and full gear. When did it change to sneakers? Not making any point, just wondering when it changed.

They were called "go-fasters." George Costanza rocks 'em in "Seinfeld" and if Jerry knew the term, he would have asked "But do they make you go faster--and who are these people who chase you..?"

I plan on visiting our old stomping grounds in a couple months. How tough was it then but how rewarding is it now? I’ll never forget my family meeting our drill instructors the day before graduation. - What an accomplishment. For a moment, those that survive Parris Island get to feel like they’re on top of the world. Kilo Company back in the 90’s. Does anyone know what is on this site now? I suppose that I could use Leatherneck square as a reference point.
