The 1 problem i have with the Witcher 3 is that once you notice that characters just contradict themselves over and over it will be pretty predictable sometimes obvious, yes i know that it was intended but that hurt my impresion for the characters and the combat is kinda mid if you dont mix it up yourself. And I like to recommend NWN2 Mask of the betrayer. For me its planescape torment level of awesome, a tragic and epic story with truely incredible companions, plus you play as an absolut badass D&D 20+ level caracter, its peak obsidian writing. if you like RPG you must play it. I completely agree on the point of DOS2, and to me I enjoyed that thoroughly more than BG3.
The "main character" in DOS2 is The World & it's gameplay design; while in BG3 the characters and narrative are in focus. If Larian can combine these two RPG juggernauts' design and narrative into one cohesive package, then they will become a truly legendary studio.

Regarding the witcher 3. If you find the encounters with monsters and the combat "samey" you definitely played it on easy mode. On the highest difficulty, you must prepare with the right gear, oils and potions to tackle these assignments. Plus the combat allows you to use signs which some of them more efficient against enemy types compares to others. Forcing to play differently depending on what you're fighting. So yeah, if you found it repetitive. You definitely played it in journalism mode😂

I would add Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition, Wrath of The Righteous, Kingdoms of Amalur, KOTOR 2, and the Mass Effect and Baldurs Gate Trilogies (BG1 and 2 have enhanced versions as well from Beamdog on Good Old Games). For even older games, an acquired taste, I would say Open Morrowind (OpenMW), Fallout 1, and Fallout 2 are playable classics nowadays, especially with the restoration project for Fallout 2.

Those are computer games or video games they are absolutely not "role-playing games".
Those are not RPGs because you don't play a role, and no acting or even imagination is required.
Don't get me wrong those games are fun but they are NOT role-playing games.

pretty much. However without the tabletop, that is used for the RPGs which contains remains of war gaming for games like D&D.
Long before Gaygax and Arnison, roleplaying was used in therapy and fun...

@@murgel2006 I think "roleplaying" is more of a state of mind. Do you "live" the story or not and for me it doesn't matter if I play a tabletop game or video game or I read a book I feel the same way.

Good point. I have to agree to the immersion part.
However, I'd like to point out the GAME part of RPG. The social component of playing an RPG is essential to a game becoming an RPG, immersion alone does not qualify.
Thus I would be willing to concede that a multi-player online game can be an RPG, or at least close enough that the difference does not matter.

@@murgel2006 You are right as an RPG experience nothing beat at tabletop game but I believe that at least some RPVG give a very close experience with interesting dialogues and choices, interesting NPC, story and world that respond to your actions. Sometimes its even better that you can achieve with a tabletop game. I did a lot of tabletop games and only a few were very statisfying.
